    1. SOUNDBITE (English) Ringo Starr, recording artist:
"When we landed in New York, it was the biggest thrill in my life. We're in America, where all the music came from that we loved. And oh, yeah, I'm going to get, you know, if I'm gonna be in America I'm going to be in New York. And then we went on tour and then we got to California and it was like, oh, wow, great. And a lot of great musicians then, you know, and the sunsets was full of like hippies and stuff like that. And so that seemed really good. But now New York, New York. I still love New York but, ah LA just won me over. I just liked it. You know, it's like there's a lot more interaction, not dashing across zebra crossings. So I just loved, and this I love of course the light and the heat from the sun, I love that."

  • Justice on the use of AI in music
    (23 May 2025)
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Los Angeles - 20 May 2025
    1. SOUNDBITE (English) Gaspard Augé, recording artist, Justice:
"No, but the thing with AI is that obviously you already know that there won't be any user conscience in the sense that if people like a song they won't care if it has been made by humans or AI."

    2. SOUNDBITE (English) Xavier de Rosnay, recording artist, Justice:
"We tend to see AI like a tool, like other tools. The same way, I don't know, like when there was the first drum machines, they were meant to replace drummers. And like 808 was actually designed to replace drums. It doesn't sound anything like a drummer."

    3. SOUNDBITE (English) Xavier de Rosnay, recording artist, Justice:

    7. Various of placards
    STORYLINE:
Hundreds of pro-Palestinian protesters gathered outside Israel's embassy in Athens late Thursday.
People held placards, waved flags and chanted slogans calling for the freedom of the Palestinian people, at the demonstration organised by trade unions affiliated with the country's communist party.
"We are here to condemn the murderous state and government of Israel, which continues with the backs of the European Union, the US and NATO, to mercilessly bomb Gaza," protester Merini Stefanidi told The Associated Press.
"They are starving, a people is starving and we cannot remain silent because silence is complicity," another protester said.
Protesters dispersed peacefully at the end of the demonstration.
Pressure from close allies is mounting on Israel following a nearly three-month blockade of supplies into Gaza that led to famine warnings.
Even the United States, a staunch ally, has voiced concerns over the hunger crisis.
U.N. agencies say Israeli military restrictions and the breakdown of law and order in Gaza make it difficult to retrieve and distribute the aid. As a result, little of it has so far reached those in need.
Gaza’s Heath Ministry said Thursday morning that more than 100 people had been killed across the Gaza Strip and around 250 wounded over the past 24 hours.

“We are already in the third week (of the fire season). You understand that the conditions this year will also be particularly difficult. However, we are entering (the period) with good conditions, given that the number this year, in terms of human resources, has increased. 18,000 women and men of the fire department, permanent, five-year contract and volunteers, will fall into battle along with approximately 5,000 volunteer firefighters and five-and-a-half thousand civil protection volunteers.”

    8. Various of vehicle heading to evacuate stranded fire service officer from outpost during drill
    STORYLINE:
Greece is deploying a record number of firefighters and nearly doubling its drone fleet this summer to address growing wildfire risks driven by climate change, officials said Thursday.
Civil Protection Minister Ioannis Kefalogiannis said 18,000 permanent and seasonal personnel, supported by thousands of volunteers, would be mobilized as wildfire damage has increased steadily over the past two decades.
“It is clear that the conditions this year will be particularly difficult,” Kefalogiannis told reporters after attending a firefighting exercise south of Athens.
Rising average temperatures and low rainfall have significantly worsened conditions in recent years.
Greek Fire Chief Lt. Gen. Theodoros Vagias told The Associated Press that additional elite firefighting units would be deployed to high-risk areas during the May 1–October 31 fire season.
Wildfire damage surged to more than 1,300 square kilometers (500 square miles) in 2021 and 1,745 square kilometers (675 square miles) in 2023 — roughly three times the 2011–2020 average — according to data from the European Union’s Forest Fire Information System.
Firefighters held an exercise Thursday to test Greece’s evolving wildfire response, which increasingly relies on advanced technologies such as drone surveillance and mobile command centers.
Fire planes skimmed treetops, releasing plumes of water in coordinated low-altitude drops, as commanders on the ground huddled over tablets streaming real-time drone footage.
The coast guard and armed forces took part in a drill simulating the evacuation of a children’s summer camp threatened by fires on multiple fronts.
Officials said the number of firefighting personnel has increased by roughly 20% over the past two years, while the fleet of fire-surveillance drones has grown to 82, up from 45.
Around 300 firefighters from the Czech Republic, France, Romania, Moldova, and Bulgaria are being sent to Greece under a European Union prepositioning program, officials said.

  • Explosions seen over Gaza skyline
    (23 May 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
Southern Israel near Gaza border - 22 May 2025
    ++NIGHT SHOTS++
    ++MUTE++
    1. Various of explosions in Gaza
    STORYLINE:
Several explosions were visible in Gaza's skies on Thursday night and early Friday morning, as Israel pressed ahead with its military offensive despite mounting international pressure.
Israeli tanks and drones attacked a hospital in northern Gaza overnight, igniting fires and causing extensive damage, Palestinian hospital officials said on Thursday.
Videos taken by a health official at Al-Awda Hospital show walls blown away and thick black smoke billowing wreckage.
The Israeli military said its forces were operating “adjacent” to Al-Awda Hospital and had allowed emergency workers to come try to put out a fire at the hospital, but said only that, “The circumstances of the fire are still under review.”
The U.N. says aid has been collected from only about 90 trucks — out of a total of nearly 200 that have entered Gaza since Israel ended its nearly three-month blockade this week.

  • Before the word 'transgender' existed, icon Bambi already danced for the stars
    (23 May 2025)

++SOUNDBITE STARTS ON PREVIOUS SHOT AND IS PARTIALLY OVERLAID BY SHOTS 3-5++
"In the café hall, I hear about the carousel, I hear people saying 'But they are cross-dressers', that is to say, boys who live dressed as women on stage but who then live as men. But there is one called Coccinelle who looked just like what you'd imagine a little Parisian to be like, very chic, and who goes out in the streets and lives constantly dressed as a woman. It stimulated me in an extraordinary way. I thought to myself, well, if she does it in Paris, I'll do it in Algiers and I'll have my friend in Algiers, the one I fell in love with. But it turns out things are not that easy. So I went to see the show and I was delighted and I thought if I can't live like that in Algiers, I'll go to Paris, I have to go to Paris."

++SOUNDBITE STARTS ON SHOT 8 AND IS PARTIALLY OVERLAID BY SHOT 9++
"People wanted to have fun, wanted to laugh, and you could really feel in the Montmartre cabaret, which was at Madame Arthur's, how much people demanded to have fun, to laugh, to be happy. They wanted to be, they wanted to enjoy life because, after all, the war had been over since 1945. But in 1953, 1954, you could still feel this need to live again. There were rapid progressions being made because restrictions had lasted a long time after the war, with rationing for buying flour, for buying bread. All that had lasted a long time and so we were freed from all that. You felt a freedom among the people and a desire for life, a desire to be happy, a desire to forget the miseries of the war."

    12. Photo in Pruvot with her family
    13. Photo of Pruvot aged 17, while she was still named Jean-Pierre

    15. SOUNDBITE (French) Marie-Pierre Pruvot, pioneering transgender performer:
++SOUNDBITE STARTS ON SHOT 11 AND IS PARTIALLY OVERLAID BY SHOTS 12-14++
"The mask. I never felt like wearing a mask when I went out in the afternoon. On the contrary, it seems to me that before, as a boy, I was masked, when I watched myself. I thought about the look, the hairstyle, the outfit, the gait. I thought about all that to not be noticed, whereas afterwards I lived naturally."
    STORYLINE:
The moment which changed queer history occurred on a sweltering summer day in early 1950s Algeria.
An effeminate teenage boy named Jean-Pierre Pruvot stood mesmerized as traffic halted and crowds swarmed around a scandalous spectacle unfolding in the conservative Algiers streets.
What Pruvot — who would become famous under the female stage name ‘Bambi’ — witnessed was more than mere performance.
It was an act of resistance from the ashes of the Nazi persecution of the LGBTQ+ community in World War II.
