    1. SOUNDBITE (English) Mark Van Der Hout, Attorney for Mahmoud Khalil:
"Today was the day that Mahmoud got to speak to the world. He got to say how outrageous it was, what the government has done to him, and what has been done to other Palestinians who have spoken out against what is going on in Gaza."
    ++WHITE FLASH++
    2. SOUNDBITE (English) Mark Van Der Hout, Attorney for Mahmoud Khalil:
"His presence in the United States has nothing to do with US foreign policy. It is a bogus charge. It is meritless. Will make sure that Mahmoud is ultimately vindicated."

    3. SOUNDBITE (English) Nora Ahmed, ACLU of Louisiana:
"I think we do for a second want to talk about the fact that Mahmoud was able to see his baby and hold his baby and talk to his wife and hold his wife this morning, but there's a tragedy involved in that and that's because he's 1500 miles away from his family. So everything Mark's talking about legally is true, but this man is being tortured."
    4. SOUNDBITE (English) Amy Greer, Attorney for Mahmoud Khalil:

    ++ENDS ON SOUNDBITE++
    STORYLINE:
Detained Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil was allowed to hold his one-month-old son for the first time Thursday after a federal judge blocked the Trump administration’s efforts to keep the father and infant separated by a plexiglass barrier.
The visit came ahead of a scheduled immigration hearing for Khalil, a legal permanent resident and Columbia University graduate who has been detained in a Louisiana jail since March 8.
Khalil was the first person arrested under President Donald Trump’s promised crackdown on pro-Palestinian protesters and is one of the few who has remained in custody as his case winds its way through both immigration and federal court.
Federal authorities have not accused Khalil of a crime, but they have sought to deport him on the basis that his prominent role in protests against Israel’s war in Gaza may have undermined U.S. foreign policy interests.
His request to attend his son's April 21 birth was denied last month by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
The question of whether Khalil would be permitted to hold his newborn child or forced to meet him through a barrier had sparked days of legal fighting, triggering claims by Khalil’s attorneys that he is being subject to political retaliation by the government.
On Wednesday night, a federal judge in New Jersey, Michael Farbiarz, intervened, allowing the meeting to go forward Thursday morning, according to Khalil's attorneys.
Khalil’s attorneys noted that Abdalla had traveled nearly 1,500 miles (2,400 kilometers) to the remote detention center in hopes of introducing their son to his father.
No ruling regarding the appeal was made on Thursday. Comans gave lawyers in the case until 5 p.m. June 2 to submit written closing arguments.

In Buenos Aires, pets are more than just companions — they’re practically family.
The Argentine capital now ranks among the global leaders in pet ownership per capita.
But as the love for dogs rises, the birth rate falls. New figures show a 6.5% drop in births across the country from 2022 to 2023, raising questions about changing priorities in a nation of growing four-legged families.
    STORYLINE:
Party-goers clapped and sang as Venus, all dressed up for her birthday in a pink party hat, gazed at the candles flickering on her cake.
When the time came for her to make her three birthday wishes, as is traditional in Argentina, Venus' owner, Victoria Font, intervened, blowing out the candles to a round of applause. Then her mixed-breed pooch enjoyed a slice of meat-flavored birthday cake.

Venus gazes in bewilderment at the candles flickering on her mini birthday cake. The partygoers crowd around her in expectant silence, but she doesn't blow them out.
Dogs can't blow candles, after all. So Venus' owner intervened, drawing a breath and extinguishing the flames to a round of applause before serving her black mixed-breed a bite of meat-flavored birthday cake.
“Venus is like my daughter,” gushes Victoria Font, founder of Barto Cafe, a bakery making cakes for canines just south of Argentina’s capital of Buenos Aires.
About two decades ago, a birthday party for pampered pets featuring a custom cake for dogs may have struck Argentines as bizarre.
But these days Buenos Aires makes headlines for having among the most pet owners per capita in the world.
Public opinion surveys report pets in almost 80% of the city's homes. That’s about 20% more than the average city in the United States, according to a recent survey by the Pew Research Center, and leaps and bounds ahead of other countries in the region.
As a growing number of Argentines opt to be childless in a country notorious for its economic instability, dogs have become the go-to companion.
Buenos Aires is now home to over 493,600 dogs — compared to 460,600 children under the age of 14 living in the city, government statistics show.
Those interviewed referred to themselves not as “owners” but as “parents.”
“Sandro is my savior, he’s my joy,” Magalí Maisonnave, a 34-year-old stylist, said of her dachshund.
    “I’m his mama," she said.

    STORYLINE:
Venezuela’s president Nicolas Maduro walked the streets of downtown Caracas among supporters and allies on Thursday as the ruling party closed its campaign rally ahead of regional elections on Sunday.
The election for members of the National Assembly, governors and other regional offices will be the first to allow broad voter participation since last year’s presidential contest, which Maduro claimed to have won despite credible evidence to the contrary.
The contest comes as the opposition’s most recognizable figure, María Corina Machado, remains in hiding to avoid arrest and most other leaders are in exile or prison due to the government's repressive measures unleashed after the July election.
The ruling party-loyal National Electoral Council will oversee Sunday’s election for state legislators, 285 members of the unicameral National Assembly and all 24 governors, including the newly created governorship purportedly established to administer Essequibo, a region long under dispute between Venezuela and neighboring Guyana.

"We are not going to stop. It is clear that this is a step forward, an important victory. Today we celebrate and enjoy the joy, but a small part, a large part of this joy is focused on what we must accomplish. Full equality for children born through surrogacy and born to two fathers, they have no less right to be recognized. This is only a first step, but we are not stopping here."
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Milan, Italy - 22 May 2025
    6. Various of Rainbow Families representatives hugging each other
    STORYLINE:
Italy’s Constitutional Court on Thursday ruled that two women can register as parents of a child on a birth certificate, saying recognition of parental rights can’t be restricted to the biological mother alone in families with same-sex parents.
The court ruled that it was unconstitutional for city registrars to deprive children born to same sex-parents of recognition by both the biological mother and the woman who consented to the medically assisted pregnancy of her partner and assumed parental responsibilities.
President of the Italian Rainbow Families Association, Alessia Crocini called it a “historic ruling”.
“I may be against a tree, but that tree does not disappear just because I deny its existence. These children still have two mums or two dads or a single LGBTQIA+ parent. Not recognizing the other parent does not make them disappear. They will continue to grow up with two dads or two mums,” she said.
“At last what we have been saying all along is being recognized: boys and girls have the right to see both parents recognized, from birth, even when they are two mothers,” Rainbow Families said in a statement.
The group said the ruling served as a reminder to politicians that constitutionally, it’s “no longer possible to continue pretending that we do not exist”.
The association Pro Life and Family denounced the ruling as illogical and meant thousands of children born to same-sex parents were launched into “an existential joke.”
In recent years, some city registrars had begun to record only the name of the biological mother on birth certificates, and not the name of her partner.
In order to have legal rights and responsibility over the child, the non-biological mother then had to “adopt” the child.
A 2004 law had provided for such limited parental recognition.
The ruling doesn’t address the legality of medically assisted procreation: Italy has strong restrictions on IVF and has had a ban on surrogacy since 2004.

She was murdered because she was Jewish, and she was murdered alongside her boyfriend, Yaron. The tragedy just keeps compounding."

    7. Vigil attendees singing, holding each other
    STORYLINE:
People gathered in Wichita, Kansas on Thursday to pay homage to Sarah Milgrim, a Jewish woman killed in Washington D.C. on Wednesday.
"Today is a horrible day for the Kansas City Jewish community but it's even more just devastating for the Milgrim family," said Jay Lewis, President and CEO of the Jewish Federation of Greater Kansas City during the vigil.
Lewis added "she was murdered because she was an employee of the Israeli embassy, she was murdered because she was Jewish."
Milgrim was from Overland Park in Kansas.
Her former roommate and friend, Amanda Birger shared a message during the vigil saying "something I think that Sarah would want me to say is please strive to learn as much as you can, educate yourself as much as possible so that you can advocate for others in need."
Sarah Milgrim was fatally shot along with her boyfriend Yaron Lischinsky, an Israeli citizen, were leaving an event at the Capital Jewish Museum around 9:15 p.m.
Israeli Ambassador to the U.S. Yechiel Leiter said Yaron Lischinsky had purchased a ring this week with the intent to propose next week in Jerusalem.
The suspect told police after his arrest, “I did it for Palestine, I did it for Gaza," federal authorities said Thursday in announcing charges in the killings they called a targeted act of terrorism.
Elias Rodriguez, 31, shouted “Free Palestine” as he was led away after his arrest, according to charging documents.
Rodriguez faces charges of murder of foreign officials and other crimes and did not enter a plea during a perfunctory court appearance.
Additional charges are likely, prosecutors said, as authorities continue to investigate the killings as both a hate crime against the Jewish community and terrorism.
The stunning attack prompted Israeli missions to beef up their security and lower their flags to half-staff.
It came as Israel pursues another major offensive in the Gaza Strip in the war with Hamas that has heightened tensions across the Middle East and internationally, and that law enforcement officials have repeatedly warned could inspire violence in the U.S.

"Today is a horrible day for the Kansas City Jewish community but it's even more just devastating for the Milgrim family. This morning, Bob and Nancy Milgrim got the unimaginable call that their beautiful daughter Sarah was murdered in Washington, DC. She was murdered because she was an employee of the Israeli embassy. She was murdered because she was Jewish, and she was murdered alongside her boyfriend, Yaron. Today Bob and Nancy found out only hours before the rest of us in the media that Yaron had purchased an engagement ring and planned to propose to Sarah in the coming weeks when they went together to Israel. The tragedy just keeps compounding."

    STORYLINE:
The sounds of banging drums and chanting filled the air outside the Lasalle Processing Center Jena, Louisiana Thursday as protesters gathered in support of detained Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil.
"Just as we saw Mahmoud take action or Gaza, like, we have a responsibility to take action to support Mahmoud as he faces repression," said Noor Salah, Palestinian Youth Movement organizer.
The protest came during a scheduled immigration hearing for Khalil, a legal permanent resident and Columbia University graduate who has been detained in a Louisiana jail since March
"This is what America should be proud of ... that we're all coming from different background to protect justice," said Ayman El-Sawa, a protester.
Khalil was the first person arrested under President Donald Trump’s promised crackdown on pro-Palestinian protesters and is one of the few who has remained in custody as his case winds its way through both immigration and federal court.
Federal authorities have not accused Khalil of a crime, but have sought to deport him on the basis that his prominent role in protests against Israel’s war in Gaza may have undermined U.S. foreign policy interests.
On Thursday, Khalil appeared before that immigration judge, Jamee Comans, as his attorneys presented testimony about the risks he would face if he were to be deported to Syria, where he grew up in a refugee camp, or Algeria, where he maintains citizenship through a distant relative.
Khalil was also allowed to hold his one-month-old son for the first time Thursday after a federal judge blocked the Trump administration’s efforts to keep the father and infant separated by a plexiglass barrier.
