    (22 May 2025)
++LA EDICIÓN CONTIENE IMÁGENES DE NIÑOS MALNUTRIDOS++
    ASSOCIATED PRESS

The various episodes of his dream travels take style inspiration from various genres, moving from German expressionism, film noir, mobster dramas, to vampire romances with a dash of silent film performance from Qi.
"Resurrection" is Bi Gan's third film and is competing in the main selection with 21 other films. His previous work, "Long Day's Journey into Night" (2018) was presented in the festival's sidebar competition Un Certain Regard.

    (22 May 2025)
    ASSOCIATED PRESS

    SOUNDBITE (Cachemira): Gulzar Ahmed, barquero:

  • Smoke rising following strikes and explosions in eastern Gaza City
    (22 May 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
Gaza City, Gaza Strip - 22 May 2025
    1. Pan right from smoke rising over skyline to another large plumes of smoke
    2. Various of smoke rising following strikes and explosions
    STORYLINE:
Israel pressed ahead Thursday with its new military offensive in Gaza despite mounting international criticism, launching airstrikes which health officials said killed at least 100 Palestinians.
Large plumes of smoke were seen rising in eastern Gaza City as the bombardment continued.
With renewed ceasefire talks appearing to make little progress, Netanyahu said he will end the war only if Hamas releases all hostages and steps down from power — and if President Donald Trump’s plan to relocate the territory's population outside Gaza is implemented.
The Palestinians, along with nearly all of the international community, have rejected Trump’s plan to empty Gaza of its Palestinian population and place the territory under U.S. control.
The war in Gaza began when Hamas-led militants attacked southern Israel, killing some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and abducting 251 others.
The militants are still holding 58 captives, around a third of whom are believed to be alive, after most of the rest were returned in ceasefire agreements or other deals.
Israel’s retaliatory offensive, which has destroyed large swaths of Gaza, has killed more than 53,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, which doesn’t differentiate between civilians and combatants in its count.

"The regime is trying to kill the civil society and they will be probably quite successful in that respect. They are trying to kill independent media and they are quite successful. They tried to kill protests out in the street but they are not successful because we still have protests every day, every evening on Rustaveli Avenue and they're killing the opposition parties and this is one of the indications of that, what they are doing now. At the end of the day, we have to continue the fight, we have to go out to the streets, more people, we have to have different types of protests. We will win this battle only from the street, because there are no democratic institutions or elections in this country anymore."
    6. Various of skirmishes inside the courthouse

    9. SOUNDBITE (English) Khatia Dekanoidze, Member of Parliament of Georgia and United National Movement party:
"It is absurd and totally bogus, because the Georgian Dream regime created a legal commission in the illegal parliament of Georgia, which doesn't have any legitimacy, in order to investigate the state of affairs of the previous government. But this is an attempt to rewrite the history, because they reinvestigate the 2008 Russian invasion of Georgia and also it is a commission that is used to press and oppress opposition leaders, like Zura (Zurab) Japaridze for instance who refused to cooperate with the so-called commission and pay the bail."

    10. Wide of police marching
    11. Close of supporter chanting (Georgian) "Slaves"
    12. Mid of police marching whilst protesters shout and blow whistles
    STORYLINE:
A court in Georgia ordered opposition party leader Zurab Japaridze detained Thursday on charges of failing to appear before a parliamentary inquiry as protests continued against the ruling Georgian Dream party.
Ahead of Japaridze's hearing Thursday at a courthouse in Tbilisi, police surrounded the facility to prevent his supporters from entering. Only a handful of people were allowed into the cramped hearing room, angering his supporters.
Two people were arrested, and Japaridze’s lawyers left in protest following a failed motion to move the proceedings to a larger room.
Japaridze, who heads the Girchi - More Freedom party, was detained after refusing to appear before a parliamentary commission investigating alleged wrongdoings by the government of ex-president Mikheil Saakashvili.
Opposition politicians have declined to attend the commission hearings, saying they are politically motivated by Georgian Dream to damage the opposition, particularly Saakashvili’s United National Movement party.
Speaking to reporters before the hearing, Japaridze said he knew that he would be arrested but that he did not recognize the legitimacy of Georgia’s current parliament or its commission.
“The regime is trying to kill the civil society,” Japaridze said. “They’re killing the opposition parties and this is just one example of what they are doing now.”

“We still have to identify who we have on the fatalities right now."
"(Reporter: Do you believe that anybody on the planes survived?)

    7. SOUNDBITE (English) Dan Eddy, Assistant San Diego Fire Chief:
    ++PARTIALLY COVERED++
“We have damage to multiple homes down to the west of us on the street. That damage will be assessed. I believe all the homes are occupied. We did searches of every single home as we came through. This military housing area that is here is constantly occupied all the time. It's a very busy area, but I believe all of them are occupied."
    ++EDIT ENDS ON SOUNDBITE++
    STORYLINE:
A private jet crashed into military housing in San Diego during foggy weather early Thursday, igniting cars and homes and killing two people while injuring multiple others, authorities said.
The plane could hold eight to 10 people but it's not yet known how many were on board, Assistant San Diego Fire Chief Dan Eddy said at a news conference. Authorities couldn't say definitively if both of the dead were on the plane.
The aircraft crashed just before 4 a.m. into the U.S. military's largest housing neighborhood. It appeared to strike at least one home that had a charred and collapsed roof and smash through half a dozen vehicles. About 10 homes suffered damage.
Authorities initially said no one was transported by emergency crews from the military housing. But after a morning news conference, San Diego police officer Anthony Carrasco said five people from a single family were hospitalized for smoke inhalation. Another person was treated at a hospital for injuries sustained while climbing out of a window trying to flee. Two others were treated for minor injuries at the scene, Carrasco said.
San Diego officials haven’t released details about the plane but said it was a flight from the Midwest. The flight tracking site FlightAware lists a Cessna Citation II jet scheduled to arrive at the Montgomery-Gibbs Executive airport in San Diego at 3:47 a.m. from the small Colonel James Jabara Airport in Wichita, Kansas. Officials at the Kansas airport said it made a fueling stop in Wichita. The flight originated Wednesday night in Teterboro, New Jersey, according to FlightAware.
The airport in Teterboro is about 6 miles (10 kilometers) from Manhattan and is frequently used by private and corporate jets.
In the San Diego neighborhood, the smell of jet fuel lingered in the air hours after the crash while authorities worked to extinguish one stubborn car fire.

"This is, of course, a very hard day as an Israeli, as a diplomat, and as a person. This is a reminder of what we've been experiencing since 7th of October and also for many years now. It's a result of a toxic and antisemitic incitement against Israel and the questioning of its right to exist. Unfortunately, we are also witnessing that there are politicians, elected officials also here in France that are adopting this kind of language and the result is a person, a terrorist like we saw today that sees it as a green light to do things like that. We've also been experiencing for the last few weeks a wave of attempts to harm our diplomats and our embassies also here in France three weeks ago. And we hope that this ends sometime soon."

(Responding to question about Israeli miliary firing shots near diplomatic delegation)
"We are in a constant and frank dialogue with the French Foreign Ministry and I think this could have been resolved without the drama in the media of the Ambassador being summoned."
Reporter (English): "You think it's more performative?"
Assaf Moran (English): "I don't know. We've seen... it was a wave of summoning from all ministries, from a lot of ministries of foreign affairs in Europe and I think that the French wanted to be part of this group."

    10. SOUNDBITE (English) Assaf Moran, Deputy Chief of Mission at the Israeli Embassy in France:
"Well, I saw the video and I saw it not in such critical eyes like some would like to and when you look at it, you see that there was no actual danger to the diplomats there. It also was proven by the debriefing that the soldiers only shot a warning in the air in order for the delegation to step away, but there was not actual danger to the diplomats on the ground."

    12. SOUNDBITE (English) Assaf Moran, Deputy Chief of Mission at the Israeli Embassy in France:
(Responding to question on aid getting into Gaza)
"It's small quantities for now, but let's remember that by the 24th of May we are opening five centers of distribution that food will be distributed directly into the hands of the citizens. And also let's bear in mind that there is no real actual shortage of food in Gaza. The problem is its distribution and where it's being kept. It's being kept by the hands of Hamas who sells these products to the citizens in order to get some money and reconstruct its abilities to attack Israel moreover."
