    9. Wide of news conference
    STORYLINE:
China on Thursday called for a "comprehensive" investigation after Israeli troops fired warning shots as a group of international diplomats was visiting the Jenin refugee camp in the occupied West Bank.
Footage from the camp on Wednesday showed a number of officials giving media interviews as rapid shots ring out nearby, forcing them to run for cover. No one was reported injured.
Chinese representatives were among the delegation.
“China is closely following the incident," Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said at a daily news conference.
"We firmly oppose any kind of actions that threaten the safety of diplomatic personnel and call for a comprehensive investigation and efforts to prevent such incidents from happening again," Mao said, urging Israel to refrain from taking actions which could exacerbate tensions.
The Israeli military said the delegation's visit had been approved, but they “deviated from the approved route.” The military said it apologized and will contact the countries involved in the visit.
Mao also condemned the school bus bombing attack in Pakistan and reiterated China’s support to Pakistan’s counter-terrorism efforts.
The attack on Wednesday killed five people — including three girls — and wounded 53 others, mostly children, in the southwestern Pakistani province of Balochistan.
The province has been the scene of a long-running insurgency, with an array of separatist groups staging attacks, including the outlawed Balochistan Liberation Army, or BLA, designated a terror group by the United States in 2019.
Separately, Mao denied knowledge of a face-off between a China Coast Guard ship and a Philippine research vessel on Wednesday in the disputed South China Sea, where China claims nearly its entirety.
The Philippines said the Chinese ship fired water cannon and sideswiped the Philippine ship near contested Sandy Cay, which is claimed by China as Tiexian reef.
China, the Philippines, Vietnam, Taiwan, Malaysia and Brunei have been locked in a tense territorial standoff in the South China Sea for decades.

“We are already in the third week (of the fire season). You understand that the conditions this year will also be particularly difficult. However, we are entering (the period) with good conditions, given that the number this year, in terms of human resources, has increased. 18,000 women and men of the Fire Department, permanent, five-year contract and volunteers, will fall into battle along with approximately 5,000 volunteer firefighters and five-and-a-half thousand civil protection volunteers.”

    10. Various of fire service helicopter carrying firefighters taking off
    STORYLINE:
Greece is deploying a record number of firefighters and nearly doubling its drone fleet this summer to address growing wildfire risks driven by climate change, officials said Thursday.
Civil Protection Minister Ioannis Kefalogiannis said 18,000 permanent and seasonal personnel, supported by thousands of volunteers, would be mobilized as wildfire damage has increased steadily over the past two decades.
“It is clear that the conditions this year will be particularly difficult,” Kefalogiannis told reporters after attending a firefighting exercise south of Athens.
Rising average temperatures and low rainfall have significantly worsened conditions in recent years.
Greek Fire Chief Lt. Gen. Theodoros Vagias told The Associated Press that additional elite firefighting units would be deployed to high-risk areas during the May 1–October 31 fire season.
Wildfire damage surged to more than 1,300 square kilometers (500 square miles) in 2021 and 1,745 square kilometers (675 square miles) in 2023 — roughly three times the 2011–2020 average — according to data from the European Union’s Forest Fire Information System.
Firefighters held an exercise Thursday to test Greece’s evolving wildfire response, which increasingly relies on advanced technologies such as drone surveillance and mobile command centers.
Fire planes skimmed treetops, releasing plumes of water in coordinated low-altitude drops, as commanders on the ground huddled over tablets streaming real-time drone footage.
The coast guard and armed forces took part in a drill simulating the evacuation of a children’s summer camp threatened by fires on multiple fronts.
Officials said the number of firefighting personnel has increased by roughly 20% over the past two years, while the fleet of fire-surveillance drones has grown to 82, up from 45.
Around 300 firefighters from the Czech Republic, France, Romania, Moldova, and Bulgaria are being sent to Greece under a European Union prepositioning program, officials said.

  • Lebanese officials host Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Beirut
    (22 May 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Beirut - 22 May 2025
    1. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas walking past honour guards, being welcomed by Lebanon's Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri
    2. Various of Abbas and Berri seated ahead of meeting ++PART MUTE++
    3. Various of Abbas seated alongside Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam ahead of meeting meeting
    STORYLINE:
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas met with Lebanese officials including Prime Minister Nawaf Salam and Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri as he continued his visit to Beirut.
Abbas is on his first visit to Lebanon in seven years.
On Wednesday, the Lebanese and Palestinian presidents agreed that Palestinian factions won't use Lebanon as a launchpad for any attacks against Israel, and to remove weapons that aren't under the authority of the Lebanese state.
Lebanon's government is seeking to establish authority throughout the country, mainly in the south near the border with Israel after the 14-month Israel-Hezbollah war that ended in late November with a U.S.-brokered ceasefire.
The 12 Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon aren't under the control of the Lebanese state, and Palestinian factions in the camps have different types of weapons.
Rival groups have clashed inside the camps in recent years, inflicting casualties and affecting nearby areas.
It wasn't immediately clear how the weapons would be removed from the camps, which are home to tens of thousands of Palestinians, many of them descendants of families that fled to Lebanon after Israel was created in 1948.
Abbas' Fatah movement and the militant Hamas group are the main factions in the camps.
Smaller groups, including some jihadi factions, also have a presence in the camps — mainly in Ein el-Hilweh, which is Lebanon's largest Palestinian refugee camp and located near the southern port city of Sidon.

  • 'Tenderness is the new punk': Joachim Trier on bittersweet dramedy 'Sentimental Value'
    (22 May 2025)
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Cannes, France - 22 May 2025
    1. Wide shot press conference begins
    2. Medium shot panellists sit down
    3. Medium pan participants
    4. Wide shot press conference
    5. SOUNDBITE (English) Joachim Trier, co-writer/director/executive producer:
"We didn't want to make soppy movies and stuff, but we realized through the films we've made that we've grown older and that the world is a tough place and maybe we need, you know, to be vulnerable and show characters that are vulnerable, men and women and everyone else. So I kind of came to the conclusion that, I don't know, tenderness is the new punk. You know, for me, it is. You what I mean? It's like, for me it is, it is what I need right now. I need to come, I need to believe that we can see the other. I need believe that there is a sense of reconciliation, that polarization and anger and machismo isn't the only way forward here. So anyway, not to make any grand statement about that, but that's where we're coming from with this one."
    6. Medium shot Eskil Vogt, Stellan Skarsgård, Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas and Joachim Trier
    7. SOUNDBITE (English) Renate Reinsve, actor:
"The emotional weight that is in this movie is handled with so much care. I think it's then safe to go in and really immerse yourself into the work and by that, you really get some realizations in your own life. And also the biggest experiences I've had in my life is seeing a movie or seeing some artwork that really touches on something I do not understand. And even though I see it, I cannot articulate it, but it's given me less loneliness in return or I've learned something new that I cannot even articulate and that's the power I think of this movie."
    8. SOUNDBITE (English) Elle Fanning, actor:
"Yes, I was the only American on the team, but I was so welcomed and Joachim, I mean, he works with his family, like in a sense his family and his friends and you can feel that tight-knit bond and everyone was just so kind and welcoming."
(Moderator: "What kind of director's actor is he?")
"Well, I, like, I think everyone, I was such a fan of 'The Worst Person in the World' and you know, you kind of dream up a bucket list or kind of think of directors that you would love to work with and Joachim was on that list, on my list for sure. And we were rehearsing the scenes in the house and doing rehearsal scenes of rehearsal scenes. So I would have my prop script and then my real script right next to each other. And I was like, how do I annotate my scripts? Let me try to bring that in. And we worked with props to make that right. And the environment he creates is such a safe space to just be open. And he is there looking at you and seeing you and right next to the camera and just getting things out of you that you didn't even know were inside of yourself. It's like you're surprising yourself every day. And so it was unbelievably creatively fulfilling."
    9. SOUNDBITE (English) Stellan Skarsgård, actor/executive producer:
"I've seen his films and I felt well, when is he going to call me? Because I felt that he has something - he can, I wanted to work with him and he can get something out of me that maybe someone else can't. And he called me and came to Stockholm and we met. And he showed me this beautiful script, which was, it's so much when you're an older man who's in the film business and have a lot of kids, this is perfect for you."
    10. Wide shot press conference
    11. SOUNDBITE (English) Stellan Skarsgård, actor/executive producer:
(Moderator: "Did you model your character on some directors that you met?")

    7. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Oussama Moussaoui who goes by Masawi, a street artist from Morocco:
"Last year, I participated in the 'collective wall' at the festival. After that, I returned home with renewed energy. That experience pushed me to grow, and now I find myself, for the first time, standing in front of a large mural. This mural symbolizes the city of Rabat, the City of Lights. When you look at the letters from afar, they appear scattered, but if you gather and arrange them, they form the word, Rabat."

    9. Mural showing boats
    10. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Salaheddine Malouli, director of the Jidar Street Art Festival:
"The festival never truly ends when its official dates are over. On the contrary, once the festival ends, the real interaction begins between people and the artworks created by the street artists, including ourselves. This is what makes the festival special and one of the unique cultural experiences in Morocco."

    13. SOUNDBITE (French) Arthur Maslard who goes by Ratur, street artist from France:
"I started with graffiti about 25 years ago. My work has evolved since I now mostly work with brushes and acrylics. And it has also become more mainstream, because 20 years ago, this kind of public art didn’t exist. Now, entire facades are being used, and there are more and more festivals around the world."

    18. SOUNDBITE (French) Élisa Morlet who goes by Iota, street artist from Belgium:
"Being a woman in urban spaces, I know there have been many challenges working in public spaces as a girl, even just walking down the street in general. I think that’s unfortunately the case in many places, but in the street art scene, the role of women is increasingly respected because people are simply supportive. They’re really happy to see things happening, to see color on the walls."
    19. Various of mural
    20. Artist painting
    21. Rabat's seaside promenade
    STORYLINE:
Artists added a pop of color to the Moroccan city of Rabat, covering some of its walls with murals during a street art festival.
The annual festival held earlier this month is named Jidar, Arabic for wall.
More than 30 artists from eight countries colored the capital of Morocco with their work.
The Jidar festival, held since 2015, aims to bring art closer to people, integrating it into public spaces.
"The festival never truly ends when its official dates are over. On the contrary, once the festival ends, the real interaction begins between people and the artworks," said Salaheddine Malouli, the director of Jidar festival.
The artists were lifted up on cherry pickers along with their supplies to be able to reach the top of the walls, which served as their blank canvas.

  • China criticizes US export controls on AI chips
    (22 May 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Beijing - 22 May 2025
    1. Wide of Chinese Commerce Ministry spokesperson He Yongqian at news briefing
    2. Various of reporters
    3. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) He Yongqian, Chinese Commerce Ministry spokesperson:
"The Chinese side has repeatedly stated its position that the U.S. side abuses export controls to contain and suppress China, violates international law and basic norms governing international relations, seriously harms the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese enterprises, and endangers China's development interests. The Chinese side resolutely opposes this and will closely monitor the U.S. side's follow-up situation and take firm measures to protect its legitimate rights and interests."
    4. Wide of briefing
    STORYLINE:
China levelled criticism on Thursday against U.S. export controls on artificial intelligence chips after a new rule against use of Ascend computer chips made by Huawei Technologies anywhere in the world.
Last week, the U.S. Commerce Department’s Bureau of Industry and Security issued guidance saying that Huawei’s Ascend semiconductors are subject to U.S. export controls, on the basis that they are thought to employ U.S. technology.
At an APEC ministerial meeting held in South Korea last week under looming U.S. tariffs, China's trade negotiator Li Chenggang advocated for "artificial intelligence innovation", among other topics, according to China's Commerce Ministry.
Speaking to reporters at a news briefing in Beijing on Thursday, Commerce Ministry spokesperson He Yongqian said that the U.S. "abuses export controls to contain and suppress China" and "endangers China's development interests".
"The Chinese side resolutely opposes this and will closely monitor the US side's follow-up situation and take firm measures to protect its legitimate rights and interests," she added.
Huawei’s Ascend chip is central to China’s effort to build its own capacity to build leading edge computer chips and other technologies.
Analysts say use of the chip in China’s DeepSeek artificial intelligence effort reflects a potential challenge for Nvidia in the global AI market.

    STORYLINE:
Government vaccine advisers will meet Thursday to discuss whether to update COVID shots to improve protection for the fall and winter—even as a new Trump administration policy has thrown into question which adults and children may be eligible for an update.
The Trump administration said Tuesday it will limit approval for seasonal COVID-19 shots to seniors and others at high risk pending more data on everyone else — raising questions about whether some people who want a vaccine this fall will be able to get one.
Top officials for the Food and Drug Administration laid out new standards for updated COVID shots, saying they'd continue to use a streamlined approach to make them available to adults 65 and older as well as children and younger adults with at least one high-risk health problem.

"Romania is a democratic state, there are some political parties that look for scandal, I think that slowly but surely people will understand what is one thing or another. Romania is a democracy, has an elected president and from here onwards each party will lead its political campaigns as it sees fit. If within these sorts of campaigns we have violence - physical or verbal - state institutions will do their duties.‘’
    STORYLINE:
A top Romanian court on Thursday validated the results of Romania’s presidential election rerun, shortly after rejecting a request to annul the results by the hard-right candidate who decisively lost the race to his pro-European Union opponent.
After deliberations on Thursday, Romania’s Constitutional Court unanimously rejected the annulment request, filed on Tuesday by George Simion, in which he alleged that foreign interference and coordinated manipulation affected the vote.
The Court then validated the results and held a short ceremony attended by the elected President Nicusor Dan, the Bucharest mayor who won the tense runoff, beating Simion with 53.6% of the vote, a margin of more than 829,000 votes.
Simion, the 38-year-old leader of the hard-right Alliance for the Unity of Romanians, had conceded defeat after losing in the runoff to Dan, but later contested the results. The court said its decision on Thursday is final.
Sunday’s tense vote was held months after the same court voided the previous election in which the far-right outsider Calin Georgescu led the first round, following allegations of electoral violations and Russian interference, which Moscow has denied.
The Court's unprecedented decision last year to cancel the election plunged EU and NATO member Romania into its worst political crisis in decades, compounded by a string of crises such as the war in neighboring Ukraine and a significant budget deficit.
Dan is expected to be officially sworn in next week, after which he must also contend with deep societal divisions laid bare by the vote, revealing a country where endemic corruption, inequality and an erosion of trust in traditional institutions and parties have fueled a broad rejection of the political establishment.
