  • John Krasinski: Natalie Portman brings 'touch of class' to 'Fountain of Youth'
    (21 May 2025)
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Paris - 30 April 2025
    1. SOUNDBITE (English) Natalie Portman and John Krasinski, actor:
    Krasinski: "I think for me, it was, I've been looking to watch this movie for years. So when I got the script and found out that it was Guy Ritchie, I would do anything with Guy. I've been a huge fan of his forever. But then when I realized that it was making a run at the things that I grew up on, I mean, this is the movie I pretended to be in when I was a kid. This is what got me into the business. And so to be in the real version of the thing that I ran around the woods behind my house doing is pretty surreal. And then I will say, like, you get someone like Natalie on board and that's a whole new touch of class for the thing that it's just so exciting. She's one of the best actors we have. And she's so much fun. I've had so much fun with her. And day one, you know, a sibling, I personally feel these movies sort of live and die with the relationships. You know what I mean? Because the fun is going to be fun. But do you care about these people? And I think the sibling thing really only works if you're having genuine fun with the person that can come off screen. And I laughed with her every single day. She's so funny. And so once that happened, we were off to the races."

  • Un atacante suicida ataca un autobús escolar con un coche bomba en Pakistán y mata a 5 personas
    (21 May 2025)

    STORYLINE:
    Israeli strikes continued to pound the Gaza Strip on Wednesday, despite a surge in international anger at Israel's widening offensive.
    The attacks killed at least 82 people, including several women and a week-old infant, according to the Gaza Health Ministry and area hospitals.
    In the southern city of Khan Younis, where Israel recently ordered new evacuations pending an expected expanded offensive, 24 people were killed, 14 from the same family.
    A week-old infant was killed in central Gaza.
    The Israeli military did not immediately comment on the strikes, but has said it is targeting Hamas infrastructure and accused Hamas militants of operating from civilian areas.
    Israel launched its new military operation in Gaza over the weekend, saying it aims to return dozens of hostages held by Hamas and destroy the militant group.
    More than 300 people have been killed in Gaza during the latest onslaught, according to health officials.
    The war in Gaza began when Hamas-led militants attacked southern Israel, killing some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and abducting 251 others.
    The militants are still holding 58 captives, around a third of whom are believed to be alive, after most were returned in ceasefire agreements or other deals.
    Israel’s retaliatory offensive has destroyed large swaths of Gaza and killed more than 53,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, which doesn’t differentiate between civilians and combatants in its count.

  • In Syria, a Shiite shrine and community navigate a changed landscape
    (21 May 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Sayyida Zeinab, Damascus, Syria - 15 March 2025
    1. Wide of Sayyida Zeinab shrine
    2. Various of worshippers at shrine
    3. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Jaaffar Kassem, Sayyida Zeinab shrine director:
    "In that period of fear that people had in the first day or the first two days, perhaps, after the fall of the regime, many people from across society, employees, people from the Shiite community, people from outside the Shiite community had left Damascus to go to Lebanon or Iraq or anywhere they could go. But after a few days, a lot of these people came back. And within weeks, the majority had come back.”
    4. Tilt-down of shrine
    5. Various of interiors of shrine, worshippers inside praying and reading Quran
    6. Worshipper crying at shrine
    7. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Ahmad Majzoub, Iraqi Shiite visitor:
    "Our cause is about Sayyida Zeinab. She matters to us. All the rest of these matters are internal issues. I cannot involve myself in a place or spread fear among people. Besides, we have brothers there, the Shiites there are followers of the doctrine of the family (of the Prophet Muhammad). They are our brothers and the brothers of the rest of the Syrians. We are brothers, united from ancient times, from a long time ago. And we are here now and will be in the future as brothers who cannot be separated by someone being Shiite, or Sunni or Christian. No."
    8. Worshippers at shrine
    9. Tilt-down of interior of shrine
    STORYLINE:
    At the Sayyida Zeinab shrine, rituals of faith unfold: worshippers kneel in prayer; visitors raise their palms skyward or fervently murmur invocations as they press their faces against an ornate enclosure surrounding where they believe the granddaughter of Prophet Muhammad is entombed.
    But it’s more than just religious devotion that the golden-domed shrine became known for during Syria’s prolonged civil war.
    At the time, protecting shrines from Sunni extremists became a rallying cry for some Shiite fighters and Iran-backed groups from beyond Syria’s borders who backed the former government of Bashar Assad.
    The shrine and its suburb, which bears the same name, thus, emerged as one symbol of how the religious and geopolitical intertwined during the conflict.
    With such a legacy in the backdrop, local Shiite community leaders and members are now navigating a dramatically altered political landscape around Sayyida Zeinab, and beyond, after Assad’s December ouster by armed insurgents led by the Sunni Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS).
    The complex transition that is underway has left some in Syria’s small Shiite minority feeling vulnerable.
    There was a "period of fear that people had in the first day or the first two days, perhaps, after the fall of the regime," said shrine director Jaaffar Kassem.
    Zeinab is the daughter of the first Shiite Imam, Ali, cousin and son-in-law of Prophet Muhammad.
    She has earned several titles, such as the "mother of misfortunes" for enduring tragedies, including the 7th-century killing of her brother, Hussein.
    His death exacerbated the schism between Islam’s two main sects, Sunni and Shiite, and is mourned annually by Shiites.
    Zeinab's burial place is disputed; some Muslims believe it’s elsewhere.
    The Syria shrine has drawn pilgrims, including from Iran, Iraq and Lebanon. Since Assad’s ouster, however, fewer foreign visitors have come, an economic blow to those catering to them in the area.
    Over the years, the Sayyida Zeinab suburb has suffered deadly attacks by militants.
    Post Assad, some tensions have centred on the shrine.

  • Displaced Palestinians at camp in Gaza City queue for food, as critical aid fails to reach them

    ++SOUNDBITE PARTIALLY COVERED++
    "We don’t want anything except for them to stop the war and stop the gunfire. We don’t want anything, we don't want a charity kitchen. I swear, even dogs wouldn’t eat this, let alone children and young ones. I don’t have wood, or bread. What would the children eat? Is this what we serve them? Any country or people in the world wouldn’t eat this. We wait from afternoon to the next afternoon to eat lentils."
    5. Abu Amsha carrying pot and standing by tent speaking with her family
    6. Close of pot filled with lentils
    7. Various of Abu Amsha pouring lentils into cups and plates and serving it to her family
    8. Various of displaced people waiting for food
    STORYLINE:
    People at a displacement camp in Gaza City waited to get their share of food for the day, which some say is insufficient to feed their children.
    Several men from a charity group carried a large pot of lentil soup through the camp as one of displaced man said, “they got us water," criticizing the lentils for being too watered down.
    Israel began allowing dozens of humanitarian trucks into Gaza on Tuesday, but the aid has not yet reached Palestinians in desperate need.
    Lentil soup is usually rich and thick, but the batch served on Wednesday at the camp was noticeably thin and watery.
    Somaia Abu Amsha filled up her pot and later scooped small portions into mugs and bowls for her family.
    She said she doesn’t have wood or bread and a kilogram of flour costs around $30, which she can’t afford.
    Abu Amsha said her family hadn't had bread for over 10 days, adding that she cannot buy rice or pasta.
    "We don’t want anything except for them to stop the war and stop the gunfire. We don’t want anything, we don't want a charity kitchen. I swear, even dogs wouldn’t eat this, let alone children," she said, pointing at the pot of lentil soup she held.
    Experts have warned that many of Gaza’s 2 million residents face a high risk of famine.
    Several women used a small makeshift oven to bake pita bread out of ground lentils, hummus, rice or pasta.
    "Every four days, every 10 people wait for two pita breads each - over four days. That is our share to have for breakfast or dinner," said Wahij Salem, who baked pita bread at the camp.

  • House Freedom Caucus members inch closer toward Trump's “One Big Beautiful Bill Act"
    (21 May 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:

    ++BEGINS AND ENDS ON SOUNDBITE++

    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Washington – 21 May 2025
    1. SOUNDBITE (English) Rep. Andy Harris, (R) Maryland:
    “We are greatly encouraged by the progress that's been made in the last 24 hours. Obviously, the president came here yesterday and he laid out a few things. He said, you know, don't go any further on SALT. He said oh, by the way, eliminate waste, fraud, and abuse in Medicaid. That's fine. That's what the American people expect. And then he said, by they way, we have to eliminate the Green New Scam. So, in the 24 hours, well, there was a little SALT deal made. I don't think it went in the right direction. But the White House offered a proposal late last night that I think fulfills the other two parts of what the president talked about and there’s broad agreement in the House Freedom Caucus that that's included in the package I think this package is on is on route to get passed. I don't think it can be done today, I mean the runway is short today. The leadership's got to figure out you know where to go from here, but I think progress is made, I think that there is a pathway forward that we can see. But again, the leadership will have to figure out, you know, what the timeframe of this is.”
    ++WHITE FLASH++
    2. SOUNDBITE (English) Rep. Chip Roy, (R) Texas:
    “One of the reasons I ran for Congress was to deal with our very badly broken healthcare system. Today there are millions of Americans right now who can't get healthcare because of our broken system. They're on wait lists. The vulnerable Americans are on wait lists because we've got a broken system that rewards the able-bodied over the vulnerable. That gives more money to people on Medicaid than on Medicare. We are trying to fix those things and match those so we have a system that works.”
    ++WHITE FLASH++
    3. SOUNDBITE (English) Rep. Scott Perry, (R) Pennsylvania:
    “If today comes and goes, it doesn't mean that this possibility to make sure that taxes stay low and that we fix America's healthcare system and fix America’s energy system, it doesn't mean that prospect is off the table. It just means it might not happen today. And it's important that everybody knows that because there's some kind of belief in Washington D.C. that once today comes and goes, that this cannot be fixed. This is a completely arbitrary deadline set by people here to force people into a corner to make bad decisions. It's more important to get this right, to get it correct, than to get fast. And we are sitting at the table to do that.”
    ++ENDS ON SOUNDBITE++
    STORYLINE:
    House Republicans are getting closer to passing President Donald Trump’s tax breaks, spending cuts and beefed-up border security.

    Republicans look to make permanent the individual income and estate tax cuts passed in Trump’s first term, in 2017, plus enact promises he made in the 2024 campaign to not tax tips, overtime and interest on some auto loans.

    On Wednesday, members of the House Freedom Caucus appeared more optimistic about the bill.

    “The White House offered a proposal late last night that I think fulfills the other two parts of what the president talked about and there’s broad agreement House Freedom Caucus that that's included in the package I think this package is on is on route to get passed,” House Freedom Caucus Chairman Rep.
