    STORYLINE:
A suicide car bomber struck a school bus in southwestern Pakistan on Wednesday, killing five people — including at least three children — and wounding 38 others, officials said.
It was the latest attack in a tense Balochistan province.
The province has been the scene of a long-running insurgency, with an array of separatist groups staging attacks, including the outlawed Balochistan Liberation Army, or BLA, designated a terror group by the United States in 2019.
A local official said the attack took place on the outskirts of the city of Khuduzar as the bus was transporting children to their military-run school there.
Troops quickly arrived at the scene and cordoned off the area while ambulances transported the victims to hospitals in the city.
Footage by the Associated Press showed scattered debris, which included student books and a pair of shoes.
No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack but suspicion is likely to fall on ethnic Baloch separatists, who frequently target security forces and civilians in the region.
Sarfaraz Bugti, Chief Minister of Baluchistan, condemned the attack and expressed sadness over the children’s deaths.
Officials, who initially reported that four children were killed but later revised the death toll to say two adults were also among the dead, said they fear the toll may rise further as several children were listed in critical condition.

  • Body removed after adviser to ex-Ukraine President Yanukovych shot dead near American School in Spai
    (21 May 2025)

    1. Wide of police at the scene
    2. Various of body covered with white sheet, forensic investigators
    3. Various of the body being put into van
    STORYLINE:
Spanish authorities said that an adviser to former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych was shot dead on Wednesday when gunmen targeted him outside the American School of Madrid.
Andrii Portnov, 51, was identified as the victim by Spain’s Interior Ministry. He was shot at 9:15 a.m. local time (0715 GMT), authorities said, after apparently dropping his children off for class.
Witnesses reported that Portnov was shot “several times” in the head and body by more than one gunman when he was getting into his car, a black Mercedes Benz, police said. The assailants then fled on foot.
Madrid’s emergency services said that he was found dead when medics arrived with at least three shots to his body.
Portnov is a former Ukrainian politician closely tied to Yanukovych, having served as deputy head of the presidential office from 2010 to 2014.
During Yanukovych’s presidency, Portnov was widely viewed as a pro-Russia political figure and was involved in drafting legislation aimed at persecuting participants of the 2014 revolution in Ukraine.
Luis Rayo, 19, who lives in a building next to the school, said that he was sleeping when he heard the sound of gunfire.
“I heard five bullets and then came here to see what happened,” Rayo said.

One is defense spending, the other one is making sure that our defense industrial base is able to produce what we need to have to make sure that when it comes down to the ongoing and long-term Russian threat, whether that comes down to this Chinese build-up, we know that North Korea, China, Iran, and Russia are working more and more collectively – look what is happening in Ukraine, North Korea, China and Iran - are actively supporting Russia's war effort in Ukraine.”

    STORYLINE:
Spanish filmmaker Carla Simón premiered her latest film, "Romería," in competition at the 78th Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday.
She was joined on the red carpet by the drama's stars, Llúcia Garcia, Mitch and María Zamora.
The movie is inspired by Simón's teenage years, blighted by her parents' addictions and AIDS. It's the last of her trilogy of loosely-connected movies about family.
"Romería" follows a young woman, Marina, who has lost both her parents to drug addiction and AIDS. While trying find out about her biological father, Marina encounters her extended family on her father's side. They are reluctant to share stories about the past and Marina's dead parents, as they had shamed the families with their substance abuse struggles.
This is Simón's third feature. Her sophomore effort, "Alcarràs," won the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival in 2022.
"Romería" is one of 21 films in competition for the Palme d'Or award, which will be given on 24 May.

Dozens of protesters gathered in front of the Italian parliament on Wednesday in solidarity with the Palestinians of Gaza and to demand an end to the Israel-Hamas war.
They waved Palestinian flags and held banners to call for a ceasefire.
Many protesters accused Israel of genocide, causing famine, and destroying hospitals.
“There is a crime against humanity ongoing, a real genocide, therefore I think right to cry out our pain so that this savagery of war can stop,” said protester Giorgia Prosperi.
Despite a surge in international anger at Israel's widening offensive, Israeli strikes continued to pound the Gaza Strip Wednesday.
The attacks killed at least 82 people, including several women and a week-old infant, according to the Gaza Health Ministry and area hospitals.
Israel began allowing dozens of humanitarian trucks into Gaza on Tuesday, but the aid has not yet reached Palestinians in desperate need.

  • Some Hong Kong reporters and news outlets are targeted by unwarranted tax audits, media group says

“I think it does have a negative effect on Hong Kong's press freedom. Press freedom not only means the ability for media and journalists to operate safely, physically. 4. SOUNDBITE (English) Selina Cheng, Chairperson, Hong Kong Journalists Association:
“In the case of Hong Kong, in the current case, if a number of media outlets or journalists are coming under financial duress created by unwarranted audits, then it does affect their ability to be able to work continually. As a union, we don’t believe that reporters should continue the work for free. Or if they have to subsidize their jobs at great personal financial cost. We don’t believe that.”
    5. Wide of briefing
    6. Reporter
    7. Various of entrance to Hong Kong Journalists Association office
    STORYLINE:
Hong Kong's tax authorities targeted at least 20 people, including journalists, current or former heads of media organizations and their families, with audits without sufficient evidence, a leading media professional group said Wednesday as it raised concerns over the city's press freedom.
Hong Kong Journalists Association chairperson Selina Cheng said the Inland Revenue Department accused the affected companies and individuals of failing to fully report their income years ago and issued backdated tax demands. Cheng called some of the department's claims “strange” and “unreasonable."
Cheng said the moves added stress to journalists and media organisations and affected their daily operations.
“It does have a negative effect on Hong Kong’s press freedom,” Cheng told a news conference.
“Press freedom not only means the ability for media and journalists to operate safely, physically ... It also means the business environment, whether it is sustainable for them to operate.”
In one case, the tax department alleged that a journalist had made a business registration and requested that they pay profit tax for a company they did not run — citing a business registration number that didn't exist, she said. The department also asked to audit a company's profit tax for a year before it was founded, she said.
In an email to The Associated Press, the Inland Revenue Department said it has established procedures to review the information provided by taxpayers and that it will follow up on cases in which information shows a possible breach of rules.
“The industry or background of a taxpayer has no bearing on such reviews,” it said, declining to comment on any case.
Hong Kong journalists have been navigating a narrowing space in recent years amid Beijing’s crackdown on dissent following massive anti-government protests that rocked the city in 2019.
Drastic political changes have created an increasingly restricted environment for them in the semi-autonomous Chinese city once regarded as a bastion of press freedom in Asia.
Cheng said the tax audits affected at least eight organizations, including independent media outlets like Hong Kong Free Press, alongside the Hong Kong Journalists Association and others.
At least 20 people, including her and her parents, were also impacted, she added.

    9. Wide of journalists
    10. Lin leaving
    STORYLINE:
Taiwan’s foreign minister on Wednesday alleged that China is using cash and other inducements to win over developing countries to its position on the self-governing island but claimed that such tactics are losing their effectiveness.
Lin Chia-lung told reporters that China’s goal is to persuade these nations to cut diplomatic ties with Taiwan, and stand with Beijing on issues it says prove Taiwan is part of China.
Lin offered no proof for his allegations and there was no immediate reaction from Beijing.
The minister said that key to that argument is a 1971 U.N. resolution that handed the China seat at the Security Council to Beijing, effectively kicking out Chiang Kai-shek’s representatives who had held it even after fleeing to Taiwan when the Communists took over China in 1949.
The resolution says nothing about self-governing Taiwan’s representation, but China and its allies have been using it as proof that there is only one China, of which Taiwan is an indivisible part.
Lin also alleged that in developing nations, “China is using cheap construction” of projects from stadiums to railway lines to win the countries over.
“We must not let China have what it wants in terms of using legal warfare to make the Taiwan issue its domestic issue," Lin said, adding that Taiwan needs to harness the support from the United States and the European Union in defying Beijing.
Chinese economic pressure has reduced the number of Taiwan's formal diplomatic allies to just 12, mainly small island nations in the South Pacific and Caribbean.
Taiwan also lost allies from among Central American countries in recent years.
In deference to Beijing, the U.S. maintains only unofficial relations with Taipei, but remains its chief economic backer and source of weaponry to defend itself from China's threat to invade the island.
Meanwhile, Chinese diplomatic pressure, often won through gifts to poor nations, has kept Taiwan out of the United Nations and most other international forums, Lin claimed.
China refuses to deal with Taiwan's pro-independence government and has been pressing its diplomatic campaign to isolate the island.
