“Christa: From Ordinary to Extraordinary” from New Hampshire PBS explores her close relationship with the state and its capital, Concord, where she was picked from more than 11,000 applicants to be the nation’s first teacher in space.
McAuliffe was 37 when she was killed, one of the seven crew members aboard the Challenger when the space shuttle broke apart on live TV on Jan. 28, 1986. The documentary briefly touches on the tragedy.

    STORYLINE:
A suicide car bomber struck a school bus in southwestern Pakistan on Wednesday, killing five people — including at least three children — and wounding 38 others, officials said.
It was the latest attack in a tense Balochistan province.
The province has been the scene of a long-running insurgency, with an array of separatist groups staging attacks, including the outlawed Balochistan Liberation Army, or BLA, designated a terror group by the United States in 2019.
A local official said the attack took place on the outskirts of the city of Khuduzar as the bus was transporting children to their military-run school there.
Troops quickly arrived at the scene and cordoned off the area while ambulances transported the victims to hospitals in the city.
Footage by the Associated Press showed scattered debris, which included student books and a pair of shoes.
No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack but suspicion is likely to fall on ethnic Baloch separatists, who frequently target security forces and civilians in the region.
Sarfaraz Bugti, Chief Minister of Baluchistan, condemned the attack and expressed sadness over the children’s deaths.
Officials, who initially reported that four children were killed but later revised the death toll to say two adults were also among the dead, said they fear the toll may rise further as several children were listed in critical condition.

  • Germany's economy will stagnate this year as tariffs cast a shadow, advisers say

“In the next two years, the German economy will be shaped by two factors: US customs policy and the financial package that was recently passed. Donald Trump's tariff policy is increasing uncertainty and endangering economic growth worldwide.”
    6. Schnitzer speaking
    7. SOUNDBITE (German) Monika Schnitzer, Head of German government panel of independent economic advisers:
“For Germany, we therefore expect growth of 0.0 percent this year with inflation of 2.1 percent. However, the financial package offers opportunities for modernizing the infrastructure in Germany and a return to a higher growth path. Next year, we therefore expect growth of 1.0% and inflation of 2.0%.”
    8. Journalists taking notes
    9. Wide of press conference
    STORYLINE:
Germany's economy will stagnate this year as the country faces headwinds from U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs and trade threats, the government's panel of independent economic advisers said Wednesday.
Germany has Europe's biggest economy, but hasn't seen significant economic growth in five years and the gross domestic product shrank in each of the last two years.
The advisory panel, in its first forecast since new Chancellor Friedrich Merz's government took office earlier this month, predicted the economy will stagnate this year and grow by 1% in 2026. Its previous forecast, in November, was for 0.4% growth this year.
The new outlook is in line with the forecast made a month ago by Germany's last government.
Merz, who took office on May 6, has pledged to roll back bureaucracy, advance digitization, provide tax breaks for companies and promote more European trade agreements.
But she said that a huge investment package put together by Merz's coalition “offers opportunities for a modernization of infrastructure in Germany and a return to a higher path of growth,” meaning a better outlook for next year.
Germany for years expanded exports and dominated world trade in engineered products such as industrial machinery and luxury cars.
But it has suffered from increasing competition from Chinese companies, along with many other factors, and Trump's tariffs have added a further risk to German exports.
Last year, the United States was Germany’s biggest single trading partner for the first time since 2015, displacing China from the top spot as exports to the Asian power declined.

  • AP explains the Pelicot drugging and rape verdict in France
    (20 Dec 2024)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Avignon, France - 19 December 2024
    1. STILL of Gisele Pelicot speaking to press after leaving courtroom
    2. SOUNDBITE (English) John Leicester, The Associated Press: ++STARTS ON PREVIOUS SHOT AND PARTIALLY OVERLAID BY SHOTS 3 TO 15/NIGHT SHOT++
"Gisele Pelicot. That's a name that the world may never have heard had it not been for the astounding courage of the 72-year-old in France who decided to turn the tables on her ex-husband and the dozens of men he recruited to rape her. As a survivor of sexual violence, Gisele Pelicot could have stayed anonymous. She could also have insisted that sordid homemade videos of rapes filmed by her husband after he'd knocked out with tranquillizers not be shown in court. But instead, she decided for victims of sexual abuse everywhere, that shame had to change sides, falling not on her, but instead on the men that her husband invited to their house to rape her in their bedroom. She waived her right to anonymity and she threw the doors of the courthouse here in Avignon wide open for the world to see. By doing so Gisele Pelicot took a stand that has resonated across France and beyond. She shone the spotlight on gender based violence and sexual predators use of drugs to knock out unwitting victims. And she also spurred renewed discussion, building on the progress of the MeToo movement about fighting rape culture and toxic masculinity. For those who have attended the drugging and mass rape trial here in this southern French city, Gisele Pelicot courage has been a shining light in the darkness of more than three months of hearings and appalling testimony. Seeing her facing down the 51 defendants on trial for rape and sexual assault, one woman alone against so many men, was one of the defining images of this historic case. And another came today when Gisele Pelicot emerged vindicated after the court declared all 51 men guilty. Facing a wall of cameras, she spoke about how difficult the trial has been for her. But as she has done from the beginning, she also didn't want the outcome to be just about her. She said she'd fought in part for her grandchildren. She said they are the future. And in her own words, she spoke of all the unknown victims whose stories remain untold. I want you to know that we share the same fight, she said. Gisele Pelicot, now a name that may never be forgotten."

    STORYLINE:
Palestinians in Deir al-Balah held funeral prayers Wednesday over the bodies of victims including children who were killed in an Israeli army airstrike in central Gaza.
In the latest assaults, a strike in the city of Deir al-Balah killed 13 people, and another in the nearby built-up Nuseirat refugee camp killed 15, according to al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital.
Men carried the bodies of victims, including of a 7-day-old baby and a 2-year-old toddler, out of the morgue.
Children inspected the house destroyed by Israeli airstrikes, gathering near the rubble.
Remains of food and a wheelchair were seen amid the debris.
Israel pressed ahead Tuesday with its new military offensive in Gaza despite mounting international criticism, launching airstrikes that health officials said killed at least 85 Palestinians.
Two strikes in northern Gaza hit a family home and a school-turned-shelter, killing at least 22 people, more than half of them women and children, according to Gaza's Health Ministry.
The Israeli military said it targeted a Hamas command center and warned civilians ahead of time.
Two strikes in Khan Younis killed 10 people, according to Nasser Hospital.
Israel said it was targeting militants and blames Hamas for civilian deaths because the group operates in densely populated areas.

    6. Various of Fathy and Tawadros II listening to experts speaking about the restoration work done at the site
    7. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Tawadros II, Coptic Orthodox pope:
"All Egyptians come here (to the site), Muslims and Christians, to get the blessings of the saint and his blessed legacy because he is the most famous Egyptian martyr on the land of Egypt, Abu Mena (Saint Menas). At the same time, there is foreign tourism (at the site) from outside Egypt. As we've heard in the briefing, the antiquities here from the third, fourth and fifth centuries had become known to the whole world, the whole world without exception. This is considered a purely Egyptian chapter (in history) that gives pride to every Egyptian."
    8. Various of conservation work with groundwater drainage system underneath
    9. SOUNDBITE (English) Mohamed Ismail, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities:
"Unfortunately, the rising of water table put him (the site) under the dangerous list of UNESCO (list of world heritage sites in danger). And the success of the Egyptian government managed to lower the level of the water table and also to maintain the restoration and the archaeological work. And we are happy that the Supreme Council of Antiquities and all the stakeholders as well as the church - they are all helping. They are all cooperating in order to make this site a unique site and to return in it back, hopefully next year to the normal World Heritage list and to be out of the dangerous list."

    12. SOUNDBITE (English) Mohamed Ismail, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities:
"It is a kind of complex, it is a city. It is not only just a monastery, but it is a city and it has a big church, more than seven churches and also more than... a lot of houses and a lot of structures. So that (the site) was used during the second and third and even up to the fifth century A.D., and people used to stay there in this, of course, city at that time. But unfortunately, later on this city was completely destroyed and the remaining (ruins) of the city is what we see right now."

    STORYLINE:
Egypt has drained the groundwater that had collected below a centuries-old Christian site in a bid to get it removed from the United Nations cultural agency's list of endangered world heritage sites.
Senior Egyptian antiquities officials and Egypt's Coptic Orthodox pope, Tawadros II, toured the area near the coastal city of Alexandria on Tuesday.
The historical area centers around Saint Menas, who died in the early days of Christianity and is buried at the site that was inscribed in 1979 on the list of globally treasured natural and cultural sites recognized by the United Nations.
