  • lma rushes 29 Sep
(29 Sep 1997) AP rushes of tapes from AP’s Paris bureau. Coverage of the death of Princess Diana.
French investigators on Monday night brought Princess Diana's wrecked Mercedes back to the scene of the crash in an apparent attempt to reconstruct the fatal accident.
They were hoping the reconstruction of events - although not a complete one in the legal sense - would help to find the cause of the tragedy which happened nearly a month ago.
Police closed off traffic at about 2000 local time (1800 GMT) and forced journalists and cameramen away from the entrances to the Pont de l'Alma tunnel along the Seine River.
The apparent reconstruction took place almost a month after the crash that killed Princess Diana, her companion Dodi Fayed and their driver, Henri Paul.
An hour after police had closed off the tunnel, the wrecked Mercedes arrived on a flatbed truck - covered in dark green plastic.
Before the remains of the vehicle were brought in, three cars were driven at several-minute intervals into the tunnel as investigators watched carefully.
Cars were also sent into the tunnel from the opposite direction, apparently to see what witnesses could have made out from that vantage point.
A tripod with an engineering tool used to measure distance and trajectory had been set up at the mouth of the tunnel.
Examining magistrate Herve Stephan was already at the scene when the wreckage arrived, carrying out his second fact-finding trip.
He was accompanied by about a dozen officials including the chief of the capital's crime squad, Martine Monteil.
They could be seen huddling inside the underpass.
Although the investigators were attempting at least a partial reconstruction of the crash, it wasn't a complete one in the legal sense, because that would have meant lawyers for the various parties - including those representing the photographers under investigation in the crash - would have been present.
Reconstructions are typically used by French authorities to resolve inconsistencies in testimony and to test various theories.

  • Diagram of Diana accident
(20 May 2025) AP rushes of tapes from AP’s Paris bureau. Coverage of the death of Princess Diana.
Three months after Diana's death in Paris, an official diagram obtained by APTV appears to confirm that another vehicle was involved in the fatal car crash in the Pont D'Alma tunnel.
The diagram is part of the ongoing investigation into the tragic accident and was made by police at the scene just moments after the accident.
It appears to show that a second car may have been involved in the events that led up to the Mercedes crashing into the 13th pillar and the wall.
The exact events in Paris which led to the tragic death of Diana, Princess of Wales, and her companion Dodi Al-Fayed as well as their chauffeur still remain unclear.
This official sketch, obtained exclusively by APTV, may at last shed some light on the accident.
Here, the Mercedes car (in black and identified by the letter A) is seen in its final resting position after hitting the 13th pillar in the Pont D'Alma tunnel. Around it are pieces of debris from the crash.
The camera then follows the direction of the traffic flow into the tunnel.
This white car illustrated on the document contained witnesses and is not connected with the crash.
However, the black and white oval is the most solid evidence yet that another car was involved.
It shows a collision zone where fragments of rear lights (Verre rouge) and fragments of headlights (Verre blanc) were found.
Immediately afterwards, the black lines represent the skid marks left by the Mercedes as it tried to break, hitting the 13th pillar before coming to a standstill - but now facing in the opposite direction of traffic.
The painstaking investigation, which is still ongoing, included a reconstruction in the tunnel almost a month after the accident.
French investigators brought the wrecked Mercedes back to the scene hoping it may help them piece together the clues and figure out why this tragedy happened.
Since the world woke to the news that Diana was dead, theories have abounded over who or what's to blame.
First it was the paparazzi. Then the chauffeur Henri Paul was found to have three times the legal alcohol limit in his blood. There was also talk of traces of paint found on the wrecked Mercedes.
Now, in the light of this latest revelation, it appears a mystery car was involved in some way in the events that led up to the fatal crash.

"You're stretching your whole body. I mean, you're getting all the joints at one point or another. And also what you can do in a chair is that it's a little bit more forgiving on the knees and on the hips. So as you age, it allows you to get into positions that you were doing, standing with the use of the chair and then being able to really do the pose without hurting yourself."

    8. SOUNDBITE (English) Harriet Luria, Yoga Practitioner:
"I took it up because I have osteoporosis and the chair Yoga is much easier. You don't have to worry as much about falling and breaking everything. Anything. Not everything. It is not as difficult as I thought it would be, but it's not easy. And you really do use your muscles. It's an excellent workout."

    10. SOUNDBITE (English) Whitney Chapman, Yoga Instructor:
"I've known these ladies probably 18 to 20 years. And the very first time in a yoga class I brought in the chair. All of my students said I don't want geriatric yoga. I'm not an old person. And then they saw that just having a chair is just as good as a yoga strap. A block. It's another prop that's going to help you do what you want to do. So it's not necessary because you're older, but it can be helpful and it doesn't mean you're geriatric just because you're sitting in a chair.

“I've been looking for all different kinds of exercises to do, kind of a portfolio of exercises and this is one of them. And this is the one that I could see doing for the rest of my life where some that are a little more strenuous. I may at some point in the future may not be able to do. But this is one that is good exercise and I can do it for a long time.”

I would love to see more men in class. I do have a few. I don't know if they're intimidated, but it's a great way to meet women. If everybody single. (laughs)
