  • UK trade policy analyst on the UK-EU summit in London
    (19 May 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    London - 19 May 2025
    1. SOUNDBITE (English) David Henig, Director of the UK trade policy project at the European Centre for International Political Economy (ECIPE):
"It's really significant in the Brexit context because this shows the UK moving away from the idea of setting entirely its own rules and accepting that the EU as a close market with which the UK does about 50% of its trade is the one in which the UK has to align its rules with."
    ++BLACK FRAMES++
    2. SOUNDBITE (English) David Henig, Director of the UK trade policy project at the European Centre for International Political Economy (ECIPE):
"What will happen on food and drink products is that the UK and the EU have agreed in principle that the UK will follow EU rules, will have some participation in setting them and then will follow them in return for full free movement of agricultural goods between the UK and the EU."
    ++BLACK FRAMES++
    3. SOUNDBITE (English) David Henig, Director of the UK trade policy project at the European Centre for International Political Economy (ECIPE):
"The UK is still very much outside of the EU, Brexit still holds. The UK has maintained its red lines as stated, it has not become a member of the single market, it has not joined in a customs union. There is no freedom of movement between the UK and the EU. The UK is still substantively free to set its own regulations in lots of different areas such as services - there's very little about services in today's summit declaration. What the UK has agreed to is that in certain specific areas, food and drink and energy in order to closen trading relations, to remove barriers that it will align with EU rules and regulations."
    ++ENDS ON SOUNDBITE++
    STORYLINE:
An expert in post-Brexit trade policy described a new agreement between Britain and the EU on Monday as "really significant".
The director of the UK trade policy project at the European Centre for International Political Economy said the deals on defence cooperation and easing trade flows shows the "UK moving away from the idea of setting entirely its own rules."
David Henig said it implies the UK is "accepting that the EU as a close market with which the UK does about 50% of its trade is the one in which the UK has to align its rules with."
Britain and the bloc held their first formal summit since Brexit on Monday.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who met European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and other senior EU officials in London for talks, said the deals will slash red tape, grow the British economy and reset relations with the 27-nation trade bloc since the UK left the EU in 2020.
While the EU is the UK’s largest trading partner, the UK has been hit with a 21% drop in exports since Brexit because of more onerous border checks, laborious paperwork and other non-tariff barriers.
Post-Brexit visa restrictions have also hobbled the cross-border activities of professionals.
Starmer has stressed that the UK won’t rejoin the EU’s frictionless single market and customs union, nor agree to the free movement of people between the UK and the EU.
    "Brexit still holds," Henig said.
"What the UK has agreed to is that in certain specific areas, food and drink and energy in order to closen trading relations, to remove barriers that it will align with EU rules and regulations."

  • Man who tried to sell $6.4m gold toilet stolen from English country house spared jail

    STORYLINE:
A man who tried to help a burglar cash in from the theft of a golden toilet worth £4.74 million ($6.4 million) was spared jail on Monday after a British judge said he had been taken advantage of by the thieves.
Frederick Doe, 37, also known as Frederick Sines, was given a suspended sentence at Oxford Crown Court for his role in helping to sell the 18-carat gold fully functioning toilet which was taken in 2019 from Blenheim Palace — the country mansion where British wartime leader Winston Churchill was born.
“Those responsible for this audacious heist, five individuals could be seen on CCTV, were clearly intent on disposing of their ill-gotten gains quickly," Judge Ian Pringle told Doe. “You foolishly agreed to assist.”
The toilet was part of a satirical art installation, titled “America,” by Italian conceptual artist Maurizio Cattelan, which aimed to poke fun at excessive wealth. It weighed just over 215 pounds (98 kilograms). The value of the gold at the time was 2.8 million pounds and it was insured for nearly 5 million pounds.
The piece had previously been on display at The Guggenheim Museum, in New York,, which had offered the work to U.S. President Donald Trump during his first term in office after he had asked to borrow a Van Gogh painting.
The theft of the toilet — which has never been recovered and is believed to have been cut up and sold — caused considerable damage to the 18th-century property, a UNESCO World Heritage site filled with valuable art and furniture that draws thousands of visitors each year.
Of the group who smashed a window to get into the palace before dawn on Sept. 14, 2019, only two have been charged and convicted.
James Sheen, 40, previously pleaded guilty to burglary, conspiracy and transferring criminal property. Michael Jones, 39, was convicted of burglary at the trial where Doe was convicted. Sheen and Jones will be sentenced June 13.
Doe punched his fist in the air as he emerged from court, saying he was a good person who “got caught up in something I should not have.”
The judge said Sheen approached Doe because he had contacts in London’s jewelry district.
In a WhatsApp message, Doe told Sheen he could “sell the gold in a second." Doe said he had no idea the gold was looted and wouldn't have sold stolen gold “in a million years.”
Doe, who was convicted of conspiracy to transfer criminal property, was given a two-year suspended term and ordered to perform 240 hours of unpaid work.
“You agreed to assist Mr. Sheen without any hope or expectation of a reward for yourself," the judge said. “You no doubt, for the last five-and-a-half years, regret doing (that) for James Sheen every day since your arrest.”

  • Israel steps up offensive in Gaza in bid to pressure Hamas into ceasefire deal

    3. Various of tanks and military vehicles
    STORYLINE:
Israel has launched a new wave of air and ground operations across Gaza, and the army ordered the evacuation of the enclave's second-largest city, Khan Younis, where Israel carried out a massive operation earlier in the war that left much of the area in ruins.
Israel stepped up its offensive in Gaza in what it says is a bid to pressure Hamas to release the remaining hostages abducted in the October 7, 2023, attack that ignited the war.
Hamas has said it will only release them in exchange for a lasting ceasefire and an Israeli pullout.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Monday that Israel plans on “taking control of all of Gaza,” and establishing a new system to distribute aid that circumvents Hamas.
He has also said Israel will encourage what he refers to as the voluntary emigration of much of Gaza's population to other countries.
On Sunday, Israel said it would allow a “basic” amount of aid into Gaza to prevent a “hunger crisis” from developing.
Experts have already warned of potential famine if the blockade imposed on the territory's roughly 2 million Palestinians is not lifted.

(Reporter: I'm interested to know, what did you make of Donald Trump's post on social media recently about films made outside the U.S. Having 100% tariffs, coming into America. What were your thoughts on that?")
Anderson: "I thought you were going to say he was giving us a plug or something. Did Trump see it? The tariff, you know, the tariff is fascinating because the 100% tariff - I never heard of a 100% tariff before. I'm not an expert in that area of economics. But I feel that means he's saying he's going take all the money. And then what do we get? It's complicated to me. I also think, like, can you hold up the movie in customs? I feel it doesn't ship that way. So I just don't know, I'm not sure. I want to know the details. So I'll hold off on my official answer."

    10. Close of reporter
    11. Wide of news conference
    STORYLINE:
China on Monday called on the U.S. to maintain the stability of global financial system with “responsible policies and measures” following Moody’s decision to strip the U.S. government of its top credit rating due to successive administrations’ failure to curb rising debt levels.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning made the remarks during a daily briefing when asked about Moody’s downgrade of the U.S. credit rating from a gold-standard Aaa to Aa1 Friday.
Moody’s noted that the U.S. "retains exceptional credit strengths such as the size, resilience and dynamism of its economy and the role of the U.S. dollar as global reserve currency.''
Moody's is the last of the three major rating agencies to lower the federal government's credit. Standard & Poor's downgraded federal debt in 2011 and Fitch Ratings followed in 2023.
At the same briefing, Mao announced Pakistani Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar would visit China on Monday at the invitation of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
The three-day visit underscores “the Pakistani government’s high regard for developing China-Pakistan relations,” Mao stated, adding that the two countries would take the visit as an opportunity to deepen exchanges and cooperation and promote further development of ties.
Asked about the report that China supplied Pakistan with air defence and satellite equipment during its conflicts with India this month, Mao referred reporters to the competent authorities for further details.
“China attaches great importance to its relations with both India and Pakistan. We have always adhered to the principles of good-neighbourliness, peace, prosperity, sincerity, mutual benefit, and a shared future in developing relations with all neighbouring countries,” Mao added.
