ASSOCIATED PRESS

Warsaw - 19 May 2025

1. Various street traffic with the Palace of Culture and Science in the background

2. SOUNDBITE (Polish) Piotr Malich, Warsaw resident:

"I have the impression that in polls Karol Nawrocki usually comes out as an underestimated candidate. For this reason, some people are also ashamed to admit that they are voting for Karol Nawicki at this moment. And I am absolutely not surprised (by election results)."

3. Malich passing by

4. SOUNDBITE (Polish) Piotr Malich, Warsaw resident:

"This is the choice of the whole vision of our country in which we want to live. This is the choice of whether we want to live in a country that is well-governed, that cooperates in Europe, that works in the world, that develops, or do we want what was, what was rejected on October 15 (in the parliamentary elections won by Rafał Trzaskowski's party)."

5. Newspaper kiosk in the underground

6. Various of newspapers

7. SOUNDBITE (Polish) Malgorzata (no family name given), Warsaw resident:

"Neither one nor the other (candidate). I didn't count on that. And how Poles will choose, so it will be. Everyone decides for themselves how they choose."

8. Pedestrians exit the metro, with the Palace of Culture and Science in the background

9. SOUNDBITE (Polish) Michal Brzezinski, Warsaw resident:

"Honestly, I was nervous because I thought Trzaskowski would have more support, and the difference was small, because it wasn't even 2%, right?"

10. Various of newspapers

11. SOUNDBITE (Polish) Malgorzata (no family name given), Warsaw resident:

"Yes, I'm happy, I mean, I would like someone else to win, I mean, of these two candidates, one of them, I won't say here, but I think he will win in the second round."

12. Street traffic

13. SOUNDBITE (English) Wojciech Przybylski, editor-in-chief of Visegrad Insight, policy journal focused on Central Europe:

"For Donald Tusk, this election is crucial because of the inability currently to conduct major reforms he has promised in 2023 elections because the president comes from an opposition camp. And should Mr. Trzaskowski not secure this victory, this will spell trouble for the government of Donald Tusk."

14. Wide of Przybylski

15. SOUNDBITE (English) Wojciech Przybylski, editor-in-chief of Visegrad Insight, policy journal focused on Central Europe:

"The elections in Poland and elections in Romania are equally important for NATO and Europe because of its geostrategic positioning at the eastern flank of NATO alliance. Now, we've secured elections in Romania with Mr. (Nicusor) Dan, who is a liberal candidate pro-EU and pro-NATO, sidelining the far-right nationalists. All eyes are on Poland, but the two elections are completely different because of their demographics, dynamics and the issues that are raised in the campaigns."

16. Various presidential palace exteriors , EU, Polish and NATO flags

STORYLINE:

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk's candidate, liberal Warsaw Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski, and a conservative opponent backed by the national conservative Law and Justice party, Karol Nawrocki, emerged ahead of all others in a pack of 13 candidates in Sunday's election.

They now enter into a tough two-week campaign ahead of a runoff on June 1, and they wasted no time at all, getting out very early on Monday morning to meet with voters.

Trzaskowski, who already ran and lost against outgoing President Andrzej Duda in 2020, was long considered the frontrunner this time around. He can no longer be sure.

3. Various of marching band sand sculpture

4. Pan of Walt Disney sand sculpture

5. Close of “Rasmus Klump” (Danish cartoon character) sand sculpture

6. Mid of lighthouse

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Christian Warrer, organizer, Hundested Sand Sculpture Festival:

"This year, we wanted to make something funny. There is so much going on in the world that is not to laugh about. And in the end, it turned out very strange because when you think about 'Showtime', it's obviously what you think. But the way, the carvers, the artists, actually found out what to do is... you will see it's strange things, some of it. But it all fits into the theme, in one way or another."

8. Various of sand sculptor carving elephant sculpture

9. Various of female sand sculpture

10. Various of circus-themed sand sculpture

11. Wide pan of Hundested Sand Sculpture Festival

12. Opera-themed sand sculpture

13. SOUNDBITE (English) Christian Warrer, organizer, Hundested Sand Sculpture Festival:

"The sand is from, what do you say, a sand pit? It's not from the beach. The beach sand is round, this is more sharp. And that's the big difference. Otherwise, it's the same kind of sand you use in construction, building roads, there's nothing really special about it. It has a little bit of clay in it, that is one of the secrets. Around 10 percent clay, but otherwise, it's just sand."

14. Various of Italian sand sculptor Michela Ciappini carving older generation-themed sand sculpture

15. SOUNDBITE (English) Michela Ciappini, Italian sand sculptor:

"I imagine that now the very important person is the old generation who represent their entire life and actually our roots. So, I give them the dance and the freedom and the attention. They stick out from the pictures that we have about them on our draw on the shelves. But now they are important and alive and they dance freely, happy."

16. Long shot of Ciappini’s older generation-themed sand sculpture

17. Close pan of Ciappini’s older generation-themed sand sculpture

18. SOUNDBITE (English) Michela Ciappini, Italian sand sculptor:

"I've been doing sand since 17 years, even more. And I like sand because actually it's the only place where you can make very big sculpture and also fast because it's very firm material but also very passionate. So, with the shovel you already move volumes, it's super exciting for me."

19. Various of British sand sculptor Nicola Wood carving circus strongman-themed sand sculpture

20. SOUNDBITE (English) Nicola Wood, British sand sculptor:

"I've made two sculptures here. The second one, which is behind me, is based on a circus strongman. So, I didn't want to be too literal. I've done it quite Picasso-esque. So, I've just taken all the elements of a strong man, a woman, and pieced them all back together in a Picasso style, using his iconic parts. So, the weights, the strong arm, the bit of leopard print, some circus stripes, some circus lettering, that kind of thing."

21. Various of “Wall of Eyes” sand sculpture

22. Various of sand sculptor carving washing machine-themed sand sculpture, personalities including U.S. President Donald Trump seen mixing around in washing machine

23. SOUNDBITE (English) Nicola Wood, British sand sculptor:

3. SOUNDBITE (English) Joe Biden:

"The dividends of peace are all around us and this very campus, situated at the intersection where conflict and bloodshed once held terrible sway. The idea, as I said, that to have a glass building here when I was here in (19)91 was highly unlikely. Where barbed wire once sliced up the city, today we find a cathedral of learning, built of glass and let the shine light in and out. It just has a profound impact for someone to come back to see it. You know, it's incredible testament to the power and the possibilities of peace."

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Joe Biden:

"Together we must go further and other countries in the region must benefit as well, because our partnership is about so much more than innovation and investments. It's about people. It's about our people. And that sounds simplistic, but it really is true. It's about investing in the dynamism of our societies, about creating opportunities for our students by building a secure supply chain for our small businesses."

STORYLINE:

Former President Joe Biden's office says he has been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

The finding came after the 82-year-old reported urinary symptoms, which led doctors to discover a nodule on his prostate.

He was diagnosed with prostate cancer on Friday, with the cancer cells having spread to the bone. His office said Sunday this represents a more aggressive form of the disease, but the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive, which allows for effective management.

Biden and his family are reviewing treatment options with his physicians.
