    4. SOUNDBITE (Ukrainian) Known by call sign “Calypso”, a commander of air defence unit “Witches of Bucha”:
“Judging by the way our neighbor behaves in general, you can never trust them in anything. And that's why maybe there will be some kind of truce. Everyone wants it. I want it too, of course, but it's unlikely. That's my opinion.”
    5. Mid of AK-s seen in house where volunteers rest between air alarms
    6. SOUNDBITE (Ukrainian) Known by call sign “Calypso”, a commander of air defence unit “Witches of Bucha”:
“Hope is such an uncertain thing. We rely on our strength, not just hope that it will end in something. We already hoped once when we asked NATO to close the skies over us. So we don't hope, we do.”
    7. Wide of volunteer leaving house
    8. Mid of wood-burning stove in the house where volunteers rest
    9. SOUNDBITE (Ukrainian) Olena, also known by call sign “Akuma”, a volunteer of air defence unit “Witches of Bucha”:
“If our partners see this, they already see that they are not contractual people, that they do not fulfill their duties, that they lie, they lie openly. They've sent a second echelon delegation. They do not want peace. And even in such a situation, they emphasize that peace is not needed. They need to do the arbitrariness they are currently doing in our territory. It’s our duty to defend — mine, my friends’, and my comrades’. Our job is to protect the sky and make sure no enemy threats make it through to harm us."
    10. Close up of patches of Olena, also known by call sign “Akuma”, a volunteer of air defence unit “Witches of Bucha”:
    11. Wide of sky and pine trees
    12. SOUNDBITE (Ukrainian) Valentyna, also known by call sign “Valkyrie”, a volunteer of air defence unit “Witches of Bucha”:
“Where Russia is there, I have no faith in anything, in what Russia says. Whatever the outcome of the negotiations, Ukraine is fighting, Ukraine is standing, Ukraine is with weapons.”
    13. Various of volunteer of air defence unit “Witches of Bucha” moving weapon cases to their house in the base
    STORYLINE:
The evening before Russia and Ukraine were due to hold their first direct peace talks in three years, women volunteers of the air defense unit “Witches of Bucha” were on duty, as they are each night, in a forest in the Kyiv region.
Russian drone attacks are typically more intense at night, but daytime attacks are just as deadly.
The drone unit spends entire nights driving back and forth from their base in the forest to the position.
Sometimes they stand there for hours waiting to shoot.
The night before the negotiations was quiet, and members of the unit rested in small camp houses at their forest base.
Asked about their views on a potential cease-fire, the women were doubtful any tangible results would be achieved.
“If our partners see this, they already see that they are not contractual people, that they do not fulfill their duties, that they lie, they lie openly,” said Olena, also known by call sign “Akuma,” and a volunteer of the air defense unit.
“They’ve sent the second echelon delegation. They do not want peace,” she added.
Another volunteer said she was cautiously hopeful.

"The army entered upon us, bombing, killing and (there were) martyrs. And as you can see I am a sick man, old and sick. And with difficulty, we were able to get out, without tents or anything or water. As you can see, our gallons of water, and as you can see our children, look at these children. There are injured and martyrs, but the ambulance is unable to reach that area at all."
    6. Various of people carrying their belongings and fleeing from Beit Lahiya
    STORYLINE:
Israeli strikes across the Gaza Strip on Friday killed at least 64 people, hospitals said, as U.S. President Donald Trump wraps up his Middle East visit that skipped Israel and offered no prospect for a ceasefire in the war-battered territory.
The Israeli military had no immediate comment on the strikes, which lasted hours into Friday morning and sent people fleeing from the Jabaliya refugee camp and the town of Beit Lahiya.
They followed days of similar attacks that killed more than 130 people, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry.
After the strikes, dark smoke was seen rising over Jabaliya as people grabbed what they could of their belongings and fled on donkey carts, by car and foot.
“The army entered upon us, bombing, killing...We got out with difficulty, we got out of the house with difficulty, killing and death. We did not take anything,” said Feisal Al-Attar, who was displaced from Beit Lahiya.
At least 48 bodies were brought to the Indonesian Hospital and another 16 bodies were taken to Nasser Hospital, health officials said, as strikes overnight into Friday morning hit the outskirts of Deir al-Balah and the city of Khan Younis.
There had been widespread hope that Trump's regional trip could usher in a ceasefire deal or renewal of humanitarian aid to Gaza.
An Israeli blockade of the territory is now in its third month.

    STORYLINE:
Pakistan on Friday observed Youm-e-Tashakur, or Day of Gratitude, to mark what it regards as a victory over India in the recent standoff.
Celebrations across the nation were used to honour the victims and pay tribute to the armed forces for their actions.
India recently struck targets inside Pakistan it claimed were affiliated with militants responsible for the massacre of 26 tourists last month in Indian-controlled Kashmir.
Pakistan denies any links to the attackers.
After India's strikes in Pakistan, the two sides exchanged heavy fire along their de facto borders, followed by missile and drone strikes into each other’s territories, mainly targeting military installations and airbases.
In the port city of Karachi in Sindh province, the Day of Gratitude was marked with great zeal and national spirit.
Sindh Governor Kamran Khan Tessori visited the mausoleum of Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinah to pay homage the father of the nation.
He thanked Pakistan's neighbours and the U.S. for supporting his nation during the escalation of tension.
He also stressed that any future talks with India on Kashmir and sharing water would have to be held on equal footing.
Both countries claim the Himalayan region of Kashmir in its entirety but administer it in parts.
The recent escalating hostilities between the nuclear-armed rivals threatened regional peace, leading to calls by world leaders to cool down tempers and the U.S. mediating a ceasefire.

    4. Mid of US Secretary of the State Marco Rubio and US Donald Trump's Special Envoy Keith Kellog
    5. Wide of media
    STORYLINE:
Delegations from the U.S. and Ukraine held three-way talks with Turkish officials in Istanbul on Friday.
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan hosted the talks between the U.S. side, which included Secretary of State Marco Rubio, special envoy for Ukraine Keith Kellogg and ambassador to Turkey Thomas Barrack.
Ukraine was represented by Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, Defense Minister Rustem Umerov and head of the Ukrainian presidential office Andriy Yermak.
The latest push to end the fighting got off to a rocky start on Thursday, when Russian President Vladimir Putin spurned an offer by Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy to meet face-to-face.
Delegations from the two countries also flew to different Turkish cities and put together teams of significantly different diplomatic heft for possible talks.
Although expectations for a possible Putin-Zelenskyy meeting were low, the apparent lack of traction in peace efforts frustrated hopes of bold steps being taken in Turkey toward reaching a settlement.

  • UK PM says Putin's absence from talks with Ukraine 'clear evidence' he does not want peace
    (16 May 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ++QUALITY AS INCOMING++
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Tirana, Albania - 16 May 2025
    ++BEGINS AND ENDS ON SOUNDBITE++
    1. SOUNDBITE (English) Keir Starmer, UK Prime Minister:
“Well I think that what we saw yesterday and overnight is yet more evidence that Putin is not serious about peace. He's been dragging his heels and I think it's really important therefore that we have absolute unity with our allies. We'll be working on that again today, to be clear that there must be a ceasefire, but also to be clear that, if there should not be a ceasefire, then we will act together in relation to sanctions. But for me this clear evidence that Putin doesn't seriously want peace, he's dragging his heels, and that's why today is a really important opportunity to work with colleagues to make sure that we are absolutely united and President Zelenskyy will be here today so we will be discussing the situation with him.”
    ++BLACK FRAMES++
    2. SOUNDBITE (English) Keir Starmer, UK Prime Minister:
“In the last two weeks you've seen the UK do a trade deal with India, really important for our country and our national interest, a trade deal with the US again important for our country and national interest. I'm positive going into Monday, and I think that this is an important moment for our country that will be measured in the benefits to working people and their living standards. But we're positive as we go into the summit on Monday.”
    ++ENDS ON SOUNDBITE++
    STORYLINE:
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said on Friday Russian President Vladimir Putin's absence from talks with Ukraine is "clear evidence" he does not want peace.
Speaking in Albania, Starmer said Putin is "dragging his heels" after spurning an offer by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to meet face-to-face in Turkey to try to secure a ceasefire.
Zelenskyy is joining the leaders of dozens of European countries and organizations for a one-day summit in Albania's capital to discuss security and defense challenges across the continent, with Russia's so-called 'military campaign' of Ukraine at the top of the agenda.

  • China Foreign Ministry spokesperson gives daily news conference in Beijing
    (16 May 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Beijing - 16 May 2025
    Spokesperson: Lin Jian
    Duration: 4'32
    STORYLINE:
    1. Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Vice Premier of the State Council Zhang Guoqing will be in Russia from May 19 to 22 for the fifth meeting of the council of cooperation between the upper and middle reaches of the Yangtze River and the Volga Federal District and the chairpersons’ meeting of the China-Russia Intergovernmental Commission on Cooperation and Development of Northeast China and the Far East and Baikal Region of Russia. Can the Foreign Ministry provide more details?
Vice Premier Zhang Guoqing’s visit to Russia for these institutional activities aims to promote the implementation of important consensus reached by the two leaders, systematically review the progress of bilateral cooperation, and plan the key directions and priority areas for the next stage of cooperation. We believe that under the strategic guidance of the two heads of state and with joint efforts from both sides, China-Russia regional cooperation will continue to thrive, injecting more momentum into enriching bilateral relations, enhancing the well-being of the two peoples, and supporting each country's development and revitalization.
    2. Russian and Ukrainian officials are holding talks in Turkey. What is China’s comment on this?
China's position on the Ukraine crisis has been clear and consistent. We support all efforts conducive to peace and support direct negotiations and dialogue between Russia and Ukraine. We hope the parties concerned will continue to strive for a fair, lasting and binding peace agreement acceptable to all parties through dialogue and negotiation, so as to ultimately achieve a political solution to the Ukrainian crisis.
    3. According to reports, the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Industry and Security issued a notice stating that the use of Huawei’s Ascend chips constitutes a violation of U.S. export control regulations and warned the public about the potential consequences of allowing the use of U.S. AI chips to train Chinese AI models. What is China’s comment on this?
The U.S. has been overstretching the concept of national security, abusing export controls and long-arm jurisdiction, and unwarrantedly maliciously blocking and suppressing Chinese chips and the AI industry. This seriously violates market rules, severely disrupts the stability of global production and supply chains and gravely harms the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese enterprises. China firmly opposes this and will by no means accept it.
We urge the U.S. to immediately correct its protectionist and unilateral bullying practices and stop its unrestrained suppression of Chinese tech companies and the AI industry. China will take resolute measures to safeguard its right to development and the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese enterprises.
    4. The U.S. trade representative recently told U.S. media that China has agreed to lift export countermeasures imposed after April 2, including export controls on rare earth minerals and magnets. China has announced revisions to several non-tariff countermeasures but has not changed restrictions on rare earths. Does China plan to lift or adjust rare earth export controls?
For the specific issue you mentioned, I refer you to the competent Chinese authorities.
    6. U.S. President Trump stated that a new nuclear agreement with Iran is about to be reached. Today, Iran is holding a nuclear issue meeting in Turkey with the UK, France, and Germany. How does China view the current situation?

In comments released by his office earlier this week, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israeli forces were days away from entering Gaza “with great strength to complete the mission ... It means destroying Hamas.”
It was unclear if Friday’s bombardment was the start of the operation.
The widespread attacks across northern Gaza came as U.S. President Donald Trump finishes his visit to Gulf states but not Israel.
There had been widespread hope that his tour could usher in a ceasefire deal or renewal of humanitarian aid to Gaza.
An Israeli blockade of the territory is now in its third month.
