++SOUNDBITE STARTS ON SHOT 6 AND IS PARTIALLY OVERLAID BY SHOTS 7-9++
“We would like to think that maybe our pontiff would introduce some elements in his teachings that are coming from the works of Augustine, and also from that spirituality that he embodied in his life as an Augustinian religious man.”
    9. Various of stained glass window with the image of St. Augustine
    STORYLINE:
A new photo of Leo XIV stands by frescoes representing past papal visits to a Virgin Mary icon in the Sanctuary of Our Mother of Good Counsel, commemorating where he prayed two days after being elected pope.
But the new pontiff is still “Father Bob” to the handful of Augustinian friars who serve in the basilica in a hilltop medieval village — and the tight-knit community of Augustinians worldwide.
They knew Leo when he was their global leader, seminary teacher or simply fellow brother in black habits with thick belts and large hooded capes.
“With Father Robert, then Very Reverend Prior General, we have had to change the names, but Father Bob … we realise the person hasn’t changed at all, it’s still him,” said the Reverend Alberto Giovannetti, 78.
He was born in Genazzano in the wooded hills outside Rome and entered the seminary at age 11.
He remembers a day in 2001 when he was struggling with the responsibility of a new position, and then-Prior General Prevost comforted him.
“He gave me courage, ‘Stay calm, the less adequate you feel, the more you’re fit for it,’ that was the meaning,” Giovannetti said. “I think it’s what’s guiding him now as well, that real humbleness that doesn’t make you feel weak, but rather makes you feel not alone.”
It’s a style of brotherly leadership that was crucial to St. Augustine, who inspired the order that has found itself in an unusual spotlight ever since Leo’s first public blessing from St. Peter’s Basilica.
“He resolutely affirmed, ‘I’m a son of Augustine, I’m Augustinian,’ and this filled us all with pride. We’re feeling like the pope’s friars,” said the Rev. Pasquale Cormio, rector of Rome’s Basilica of St. Augustine.
Leo’s predecessor, Pope Francis, was a Jesuit who took the name of the founder of the Franciscans.
The Jesuit order is widely known for its scholarly star power, while the Franciscans appeal to many because of the order's down-to-earth charity.
The Augustinian order is a bit of a paradox — it remains as unassuming as when it was first organised in the mid-13th century as a union of mendicant orders, yet traces its origins to one of the most influential thinkers in Christian and Western culture.

All these create further societal tension, hence the sensation of the end of an era, the end of a world."

    STORYLINE:
Romania braces for a high-stakes presidential runoff this weekend between two starkly different candidates: hard-right nationalist frontrunner George Simion, and pro-Western reformist and incumbent Bucharest Mayor Nicusor Dan, as a geopolitical choice between East or West.
The tense vote comes as Romania is gripped by a deep political crisis after a top court voided the previous election in which the far-right outsider Calin Georgescu topped the first round following allegations of electoral violations and Russian interference, which Moscow has denied.
After coming fourth in last year’s canceled race, Simion, the 38-year-old leader of the Alliance for the Unity of Romanians, or AUR, backed Georgescu who was banned in March from standing in the redo.
Simion then surged to frontrunner in the May 4 rerun after becoming the standard-bearer for the hard right.
Simion’s AUR party, which proclaims to stand for “family, nation, faith, and freedom,” rose to prominence in a 2020 parliamentary election, and has since doubled its support to become the second-largest party in the Romanian legislature.
To his critics, Simion is a pro-Russian extremist who threatens Romania’s longstanding membership of the European Union and NATO.

    STORYLINE:
For years, the United States Agency for International Development has been the backbone of humanitarian response in northeastern Nigeria, helping non-government organizations provide food, shelter, and healthcare to millions of people.
But early this year, the Trump administration cut more than 90% of USAID's foreign aid contracts and $60 billion in overall assistance around the world, hitting hard programs serving the most vulnerable, like Yagana Bulama, who previously lost a set of triplets to hunger.
When she gave birth to twins last August, both were severely underweight, and things only got worse as she was unable to provide them with complementary feeding when they turned six months-old.
Workers from Mercy Corps, an aid organization funded by USAID, enrolled them in an outpatient therapeutic program (OTP), which provided them with ready-to-use therapeutic food, or RUTF, a calorie-dense, lifesaving paste used to treat severe acute malnutrition.
But in February, just as the Bulama twins needed continued treatment, Mercy Corps abruptly ended the program, which was entirely financed by USAID.

Portugal is facing its third national elections in three years on Sunday, following the collapse of the center-right government of Luis Montenegro.
The election campaign has focused on domestic issues rather than foreign policy, with housing, healthcare and taxation key issues for voters, according to Marina Costa Lobo, director of the University of Lisbon's Institute of Social Sciences.
"What the polls indicate is that there will not be major differences from the last election results," Costa Lobo told the Associated Press Wednesday.
The minority government of Montenegro lost a confidence vote in Parliament amid questions about the prime minister's conduct.
Since then, Portugal has experienced the worst bout of political instability since it adopted a democratic system more than 50 years ago in the wake of the 1974 Carnation Revolution, which ended a four-decade dictatorship.
Portugal, which has a population of around 10.6 million people, has had a series of minority governments in recent years as the traditional rivals for power, the center-right Social Democratic Party and the center-left Socialists, lost votes to smaller parties.
The ballot deepens political uncertainty just as Portugal is in the process of investing more than 22 billion euros ($24 billion) in EU development funds.

    9. SOUNDBITE (Kanuri) Yagana Bulama, mother of malnourished child:
"I have been entirely dependent on humanitarian aid. Eight months ago, I gave birth to twins. Unfortunately, both were diagnosed with malnutrition by the Mercy Corps Nutrition team and were enrolled in their Outpatient Therapeutic Program (OTP) at Fulatari. After about three weeks of treatment, the program was abruptly halted due to the stop work order directive. As a result of the interruption in their care, my twins' health conditions deteriorated. Tragically, I lost one of them."

    11. SOUNDBITE (English), Ayuba Kauji, Health and Nutrition Supervisor, INTERSOS Stabilization Center, Dikwa:
    ++AUDIO AS INCOMING++
"With the USAID funding and other donors, a lot has been achieved. However, with the abrupt cut in funding, what has been achieved is almost like we're trying to undo our success then. Because more patients are coming down with complications and complaints, especially patients coming down with more severe acute malnutrition and its complications."

    Maiduguri, Nigeria – 30 April 2025
    13. SOUNDBITE (English), Trond Jensen, the head of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) in Maiduguri:
"What we are seeing is that 50% of the nutrition efforts that we have put in place are now gone. 70% of health support is under threat if it hasn't disappeared already. And that means that the figures for children in need have doubled, but our capacity to deal with it has halved or even worse. So, it's a desperate situation where we need support, not tomorrow, but today, to be able to save these children."
    14. Various of Jensen in his office
    15. SOUNDBITE (English), Trond Jensen, the head of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) in Maiduguri:
"It is a truly dreadful situation. It's very, very difficult, and the only way we can solve these problems is by working together, the international community with Nigerian organizations, with the Nigerian government. And it means that we need to innovate, we need to think outside the box, and, in many ways, come up with new solutions for how we work, and that's very much what we are looking at, not just here in Nigeria, but globally, a humanitarian reset."

    STORYLINE:
For years, the United States Agency for International Development has been the backbone of humanitarian response in northeastern Nigeria, helping non-government organizations provide food, shelter and healthcare to millions of people.
But early this year, the Trump administration cut more than 90% of USAID's foreign aid contracts and $60 billion in overall assistance around the world, hitting programs serving the most vulnerable, like Yagana Bulama, who previously lost a set of triplets to hunger.

    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Beverly Hills, Calif. - 15 May 2025
    1. SOUNDBITE (English) Nicole Kidman, actor/producer:
"Well it's just I've been supporting them. Meryl Streep actually first told me about the organization and she said would you like to be involved too and I said absolutely. So for years now and just giving the opportunities to women, especially as they get older, to write. They have incredible stories and a lot of times there's not the opportunity to tell them or to be mentored and that's what The Writers Lab does."
(Reporter: Are you feeling optimistic about the change you've seen in Hollywood throughout your career?)
    SOUNDBITE (English) Nicole Kidman, actor/producer:
"Well, I'm definitely on the receiving end of it, where I'm in a position where I am able to produce, I'm able to make decisions and choices, I am also able to choose to put women at the helm. So in my little small world I'm doing what I can. I think there's many, many people who are committed to that."
