  • China takes aim at US steel and aluminum tariffs, criticizes recent US restrictions on Huawei chips
    (15 May 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Beijing - 15 May 2025
    1. Wide of Chinese Commerce Ministry spokesperson He Yongqian speaking at briefing
    2. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) He Yongqian, Chinese Commerce Ministry spokesperson:
"China believes that the US approach is a typical act of unilateralism and protectionism. It not only harms the rights and interests of other countries, undermines the rules-based multilateral trading system, but is also not beneficial to domestic industrial development. China urges the US side to stop the 232 tariff measures (Section 232 which gives the US president power to impose tariffs on other countries national security grounds) as soon as possible and properly resolve the concerns of all parties through dialogue on an equal footing."
    ++WHITE FLASH++
    3. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) He Yongqian, Chinese Commerce Ministry spokesperson:
"The US abuses export control measures to restrict Chinese chip products under unwarranted charges, seriously harming the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese enterprises, seriously threatening the stability of the global semiconductor industry, and seriously undermining market rules and the international economic and trade order. This move by the US side is not conducive to long-term, mutually beneficial, and sustainable cooperation and development between the two countries. The Chinese side urges the US side to immediately correct its erroneous practices."
    ++ENDS ON SOUNDBITE++
    STORYLINE:
China took aim at US steel and aluminum tariffs on Thursday, after import fees on the raw materials remain omitted during the 90-day pause of tariffs in the ongoing US-China trade war.
The US Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962 gives the president the power to impose tariffs on other countries national security grounds.
Drawing on Section 232, Trump resurrected his 2018 tariffs on steel and aluminum in February this year, hiking rates to 25%.
Speaking to reporters at a Commerce Ministry briefing in Beijing, spokesperson He Yongqian said the "US approach is a typical act of unilateralism and protectionism," urging the US to stop the 232 tariffs "as soon as possible."
He also addressed the recent US Commerce Department's Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) plan to issue warnings that the use of Huawei's AI Ascend chips is a risk to industry and the public.
The BIS statement on Tuesday was announced with the stated goal of maintaining "global AI dominance."

    9. Wide of farmers, spectators and families at agricultural show
    STORYLINE:
South African President Paul Mashatile on Thursday urged white South African farmers to stay in South Africa.
This follows the recent departure of 49 Afrikaners to the United States.
The Trump administration brought more than 50 white South Africans to the U.S. this week as refugees, saying they are members of the minority Afrikaner group and are being persecuted by their Black-led government and exposed to race-based violence.
Mashatile was attending the National Maize Producers Organisation (Nampo Show), which is considered the biggest agricultural show in Southern Africa.
“The farmers that we have met here today are saying they are happy to stay in South Africa. All they need is for us to work with them to address the challenges they face. One of them is rural roads. They want us to work with them to deal with that. Then there's rural safety because we know over the years, people in the farming communities have been attacked, and crime has been rife. They want us to work with them on that so that we can deal with those issues,” Mashatile said.
The Deputy President also called upon Afrikaners who were planning on leaving, to stay and help grow the country.
“We're not going anywhere and we do encourage those who are leaving to please stay. There's no need to leave, let's build this beautiful country.”

  • DeSantis signs a bill making Florida the 2nd state to ban fluoride from its water system
    (15 May 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    POOL
    Dade City, Florida - 15 May 2025
    1. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis arriving to signing ceremony
    2. SOUNDBITE (English) Gov. Ron DeSantis, (R) Florida:
"Yes, use fluoride for your teeth, that’s fine, but forcing it in the water supply is basically forced medication on people,. They don’t have a choice, you’re taking that away from them."
    3. DeSantis signing the bill
    4. DeSantis showing the signed bill and getting up
    STORYLINE:
Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a measure Thursday prohibiting local governments from adding fluoride to their water systems, making it the second state in the country after Utah to implement a statewide ban on the mineral.
DeSantis signed the bill at a public event in Dade City, Florida, over the concerns of dentists and public health advocates.
“Yes, use fluoride for your teeth, that’s fine, but forcing it in the water supply is basically forced medication on people,” DeSantis said Thursday. “They don’t have a choice, you’re taking that away from them.”
State lawmakers approved the bill last month, requiring the mineral and some other additives be removed from water sources across the state. Utah was the first state to ban fluoride in late March, and its prohibition went into effect last week, while Florida’s provision is effective July 1.
Some local governments in Florida have already voted to remove fluoride from their water, ahead of the statewide ban. Earlier this month, Miami-Dade County commissioners voted to override a veto by Mayor Daniella Levine Cava and move forward with plans to remove fluoride from the county’s drinking water.
“Water fluoridation is a safe, effective, and efficient way to maintain dental health in our county – and halting it could have long-lasting health consequences, especially for our most vulnerable families,” Levine Cava said in a statement defending her veto.
Some Republican-led states have sought to impose bans following a push by U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to stop fluoridating water. Earlier this month, DeSantis pledged to sign the bill and was flanked by the state’s surgeon general, Joseph Ladapo, who has attracted national scrutiny over his opposition to policies embraced by public health experts, including COVID-19 vaccine mandates.

  • Advocate says Supreme Court case on birthright citizenship order is about more than immigrants
    (15 May 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    New York - 15 May 2025
    1. Close of sign on Make the Road NY office
    2. SOUNDBITE (English) Natalia Aristizabal, Deputy Director, Make the Road NY, speaking about the Trump administration's targeting of birthright citizenship early on:
"It was clear that they were going to go for birthright citizenship, so our legal team started working on litigation to try to make sure that as this administration is continuing to pass executive orders around immigration, that we're able to stop those executive orders and fight them at the court as long as the judicial system continues to work. And so that's what we did. We put forward a lawsuit to be able to defend our members and our members' rights to have their children being born in this country and have citizenship."
    3. Mid of people walking into Make the Road NY office
    4. SOUNDBITE (English) Natalia Aristizabal, Deputy Director, Make the Road NY:
"What we want is to be able to defend our members' right to the 14th Amendment, which gives anyone who is born in the U.S. the right to claim citizenship of this country. And we think that that's really important and essential."
    5. Wide of mural outside Make the Road NY office
    6. SOUNDBITE (English) Natalia Aristizabal, Deputy Director, Make the Road NY:
"We hope that the Court is going to be able -- the Supreme Court is going to be able to defend the lower courts' right to put an injunction and to say here is the Constitution, we shouldn't mess with it, which is ultimately the message of the lower courts. The current Trump administration is obviously trying to go after, how do I say, procedures, versus the actual context of the lawsuit, because I believe that they know that they will lose at the Supreme Court basically because of precedent and because this is an issue that has been discussed before in the Supreme Court."
    7. Close of mural
    8. SOUNDBITE (English) Natalia Aristizabal, Deputy Director, Make the Road NY:
"It's a very crafty strategy by this administration and what they are ultimately doing is following a set of steps to continue to attack the immigrant community, so that even if they're not successful at having the outcome that they want, they have been successful at terrorizing and scaring families and communities, which has been one of their, I would say, the main goal of everything that they're doing right now."
    9. Close of Aristizabal's hands
    10. SOUNDBITE (English) Natalia Aristizabal, Deputy Director, Make the Road NY:
"The attacks that are coming to the immigrant community, I think is a way to test waters in a lot of ways. Right now we're seeing a full attack on due process and immigrants are, it's kind of like the shiny thing that they're presenting in front of people who maybe don't understand a lot these issues. But really, nationally everybody will lose because basically what we will see is is the branch of justice and our courts, their power being diminished even more and more by the executive branch."
    11. Rack focus of mural
    12. SOUNDBITE (English) Natalia Aristizabal, Deputy Director, Make the Road NY:
"And really what has made the U.S. the country that it is, is this check and balances where you will have at least one branch be able to check on the other one. But if you have and continue to have a situation where they're just validating anything the executive (branch) does, then it will continue to strip the rights of any, everyday American in the U S. And that is huge. And that it's not only about immigrants."
