  • Supreme Court weighs whether to let Trump's birthright citizenship restrictions take effect
    (15 May 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ++BLACK FRAMES BETWEEN SOME SOUNDBITES++
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Washington -- 15 May 2025
    1. Wide of lawyers walking up to news conference
    2. Wide of Supreme Court building with scaffolding on front
    3. SOUNDBITE (English) Andrea Joy Campbell, Massachusetts Attorney General:
"But what I think is most important is not just some limited argument today, is that everyone should care about this birthright citizenship issue. It is not just about the access to citizenship and the privileges afforded by citizenship. If they can dismantle the 14th Amendment in our Constitution, they can also dismantle the other rights and privileges afforded our residents. First Amendment, Second Amendment, you name it."
    ++BLACK FRAMES++
    4. SOUNDBITE (English) Nick Brown, Washington Attorney General:
"The unfortunate reality we are facing now in America is it is incumbent on attorney generals to stand up and protect Americans from their president. Because time and time again this president is acting unlawfully, in violation of the Constitution. And we cannot address a more fundamental issue than the one the court is beginning to address today than what it means to be an American in the United States. And all of the precedent is on the side of the state actors here. Time and time again the Supreme Court has weighed in on this and affirmed if you are born in the United States that you are a citizen."
    ++BLACK FRAMES++
    5. SOUNDBITE (English) Matthew Platkin, New Jersey Attorney General:
"It was astonishing to hear the United States government tell the nine justices of the Supreme Court they weren't sure if they would follow binding court precedent. They weren't sure if they could concede that, that basic fact that is the underpinning of the rule of law in this nation. This case is about birthright citizenship but it's about whether the rule of law and the constraints on the executive, and as Justice Jackson said whether the president can act like a king. The answer I think the court is going to say is 'No, he cannot.'"
    6. Wide of representatives from National Legal Policy Center and Claremont Institute walking up
    7. SOUNDBITE (English) John Eastman, lawyer with Claremont Institute:
"Our passport forms which require you to prove citizenship all the way up until 1966 require not just you to say where you were born in the United States, but what the status of your parents is when you were born. Were they naturalized citizens or lawful permanent residents, or were they temporary sojourners , temporary visitors. So the notion that this was well settled in the 14th Amendment's plain text or with 100 years of precedent is just blatantly false, and I was glad to see General (Solicitor General D. John) Sauer say that."
    8. Men walking away
    STORYLINE:
The Supreme Court is weighing whether to allow President Donald Trump’s restrictions on birthright citizenship to temporarily take effect in most of the country, even if they might ultimately be found unconstitutional.
The justices heard arguments Thursday in the Trump administration’s emergency appeals over lower court orders that have kept the citizenship restrictions on hold across the country, while lawsuits go forward.
Nationwide, or universal, injunctions have emerged as an important check on Trump’s efforts to remake the government and a mounting frustration to the Republican president and his allies.
Solicitor General D. John Sauer told the court judges have issued 40 nationwide injunctions since Trump began his second term in January.

  • The Eurovision Song Contest is back. Here's how and who to watch

    5. SOUNDBITE (English) Jill Lawless, Associated Press:
"I'm in a Swiss city of Basel where the Eurovision Song Contest has kicked off in all its extravagant over the top glory. Fans and organizers like to say that Eurovision is the biggest musical spectacle in the world. It involves 37 acts representing 37 countries across Europe and a few beyond it, taking to the stage here in Basel, each to perform a song competing for the votes of millions of viewers around the world and of juries in the participating nations. The winner claims the right to be called Europe's Eurovision champion for the year. They get the Eurovision trophy and they get the right for their country to host the competition next year."
    6. Wide of the Rhine River
    7. Eurovision fans with flags
    8. Basel monument
    9. SOUNDBITE (English) Jill Lawless, Associated Press:
"Musically, Eurovision has something of a reputation as the home of a kind of cheesy Europop , but this year's contestants are extremely diverse. There is everything from soulful ballads, like 'C'est La Vie' by Claude, the entrant from the Netherlands, who's one of the favorites to win. There's soaring power pop from the likes of Melody from Spain and her song 'ESA DIVA,' another hotly tipped number. There are kind of jokey numbers like 'Espresso Macchiato' by Tommy Cash. He's from Estonia , but the song is basically a list of Italian clichés as something that has delighted some Italians and annoyed others. There's another extremely Italian song called 'Tutta L'Italia' that is by Gabry Ponte but is representing, not Italy, but in fact San Marino. That's just a taste of the diversity and sometimes the cross-border confusion you get at Eurovision. There is also, I would say, the top favorites and an ode to sauna culture by KAJ who are a trio of Swedish speaking Finns. They're here representing Sweden, and if you believe the bookies, they are hotly tipped to take the prize on Saturday night."

    STORYLINE:
The Eurovision party is officially underway: a week of power pop, outrageous outfits — and, inevitably, protests — that culminates in the final of the 69th Eurovision Song Contest on Saturday night.
Competitors representing 37 countries are in the Swiss city of Basel for disco diplomacy and one of the world’s biggest spectacles. Organizers say last year’s final was watched by more than 160 million people — a guilty pleasure for some, an unabashed joy for others.
Here’s how and what to watch:
This year’s contest is in Switzerland because Swiss singer Nemo won the contest last year with the operatic anthem “The Code.” Basel, which borders Germany and France, was chosen as the host city.
Countries from across Europe — and a few beyond, like Israel and Australia — have sent an act to Eurovision. The performers will take the stage at St. Jakobshalle arena in semifinals on Tuesday and Thursday that will choose 20 acts to go through to the final.
Bars and clubs in many European cities will show the final at parties.

  • Endurance athlete begins swim around Martha’s Vineyard to change public perception of sharks

    3. SOUNDBITE (English) Lewis Pugh, endurance swimmer:
“I've now been swimming for nearly 40 years in the world's oceans and over that period of time I have seen them change dramatically and I have always wanted to do a swim to talk about sharks and the 50th anniversary of Jaws which was filmed on this island is the perfect opportunity.”
    4. Pugh swimming around Martha’s Vineyard
    5. SOUNDBITE (English) Lewis Pugh, endurance swimmer:
“And it portrayed sharks as villains out to kill humans. They are obviously nothing of the sort. Sharks are essential for the health of our oceans.”
    6. Pugh swimming around Martha’s Vineyard with boat in the background
    7. SOUNDBITE (English) Lewis Pugh, endurance swimmer:
“The swim, I think, is going to take me 12 days to do. It's a very long swim. The water is incredibly cold. And because of measures which have been taken here off the east coast of the United States of America, there are obviously great whites in the water here.”
    8. Pugh swimming around Martha’s Vineyard with Edgartown Harbor Lighthouse in background
    9. SOUNDBITE (English) Lewis Pugh, endurance swimmer:
“Obviously, when you're swimming in close proximity to sharks, it is frightening. But I am much, much more frightened of a world without sharks.”
    10. Pugh swimming around Martha’s Vineyard with Edgartown Harbor Lighthouse in background
    11. SOUNDBITE (English) Lewis Pugh, endurance swimmer:
“About 274,000 sharks are killed every single day. It's completely unsustainable. It's an ecocide which is taking place.”
    12. Pugh swimming in the ocean around Martha’s Vineyard
    13. SOUNDBITE (English) Lewis Pugh, endurance swimmer:
“We need to understand the oceans and life in our oceans. We need respect life in our oceans. And most importantly, we need to protect life in our oceans. All our futures rely on it.”
    14. Pugh swimming in the ocean around Martha’s Vineyard with kayaker paddling beside him
    STORYLINE:
Lewis Pugh has followed an unspoken rule during his career as one of the world’s most daring endurance swimmers: Don’t talk about sharks. But he plans to break that this week on a swim around Martha’s Vineyard, where “Jaws” was filmed 50 years ago.
The British-South African was the first person to complete a long-distance swim in every ocean of the world — and has taken on extreme conditions everywhere from Mount Everest to the Arctic.
“On this swim, it’s very different: We’re just talking about sharks all the time,” joked Pugh, who will, as usual, wear no wetsuit.
For his swim around Martha’s Vineyard in 47-degree (8-degree Celsius) water he will wear just trunks, a cap and goggles.
Pugh, 55, is undertaking the challenge because he wants to change public perception around the now at-risk animals — which he said were maligned by the blockbuster film as “villains, as cold-blooded killers.” He will urge for more protection for sharks.
On Thursday, beginning at the Edgartown Harbor Lighthouse, he will swim for three or four hours in the brutally cold surf, mark his progress and spend the rest of his waking hours on the Vineyard educating the public about sharks. Then, he'll get in the water and do it again — and again, for an estimated 12 days, or however long it takes him to complete the 62-mile (100-kilometer) swim.
“I’m more terrified of a world without sharks, or without predators,” he said.

"Today's meeting shows that we not only agree on important projects, which would only be half the battle, but also that we implement them together and quite quickly."
    7. Mid of podium
    8. SOUNDBITE (English) John Healey, U.K. Defense Secretary:
"We've long recognised that the European nations in NATO must do more and step up to strengthen European security and we agree that the best way to do that is for leading nations like Germany and the U.K. to do more together. That's why we signed the Trinity House Agreement and we are both dedicated to making progress, not just making promises."
    9. Wide of podium
    10. SOUNDBITE (English) John Healey, U.K. Defense Secretary:
"Now I know today the eyes of the world in many ways are on Istanbul. And I have to say, this is a day which exposes (Russian President Vladimir) Putin for what he is. He says he wants peace but he rejected a full ceasefire. He says he wants to end fighting, but he continues to strike and kill Ukrainian civilians and cities. And he says he wants to talk but he doesn't even turn up to the very conference that he called for in Istanbul today. This is Putin's war. He could end it tomorrow. He could end it tomorrow if he withdrew from the sovereign country that he invaded almost three and a half years ago."
    11. Wide shot of podium
    12. SOUNDBITE (German) Boris Pistorius, German Defense Minister:
"Vladimir Putin has it in his hands to end the war, he could travel to Istanbul and negotiate, he could order a ceasefire. None of that is happening. This means one might get the impression that Putin is trying to lead the American president by the nose through the arena. And I am quite sure that the American president cannot like this, and this may possibly lead to changes, further changes to his behavior on this path."
    13. Healey and Pistorius leaving
    STORYLINE:
The German and British defense ministers met in Berlin on Thursday for their first ministerial council since signing a military cooperation agreement last year.
"Today's meeting shows that we not only agree on important projects, which would only be half the battle, but also that we implement them together and quite quickly," Germany's Boris Pistorius told reporters.
The meeting took place against a tumultuous diplomatic backdrop as NATO foreign ministers met in Turkey to debate an American proposal to massively ramp up defense investment as the United States focuses on security challenges outside of Europe.
Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin spurned an offer by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to meet face-to-face in Turkey but delegations from both countries are set to hold their first direct talks in years.
U.K. Defense Minister John Healey said Putin's decision to avoid the meeting with Zelenskyy was telling.
"This is a day which exposes Putin for what he is. He says he wants peace but he rejected a full ceasefire. He says he wants to end fighting, but he continues to strike and kill Ukrainian civilians and cities. And he says he wants to talk but he doesn't even turn up to the very conference that he called for in Istanbul today."

So, yeah, the Ukrainian diaspora that is living here celebrating in this kind of way. So, we just had some Ukrainian dishes, right, like five minutes ago. I see, I'm really enjoying that people, even if they're not at homes, they're far away from Ukraine, they're trying to bring the traditions here to show what we are, yeah, so that's it.

    9. SOUNDBITE (English) Ziferblat, Ukraine representative for Eurovision (left to right: Fedir Khodakov, Valentyn Leshchynskyi, Daniil Leshchynskyi):
"A little bit of pressure, yeah, but it's a childhood dream to represent such a big country. I mean, I'm a huge fan of the sports and in my childhood I dreamed to represent Ukraine in a national football team. But now I'm musician and I'm just complete my dream with a musical contest, yeah. Such a privilege to represent, yeah."
"But of course it's, we have two missions here because we are representing Ukraine during the war times and so we need to remind Europeans about the war. So we are fundraising, oh, look at this wind, we are funding money to buy some robotic systems to demine Ukraine, a big part of Ukrainian territories that we can compare like this part of the Ukrainian territory to like three and a half Switzerland, you know, is equal to three and half Switzerland. So yeah, we started this fundraising company, we need $100,000 to buy a four-robotic system to demine Ukrainian territory, yeah. And the second goal, of course, we represent the whole nation that is suffering because of the war and we need to get a high position."

But the day after, she came to us like nothing happened. I mean, she's so strong, she is 19 years old only, but the impact of this situation, I think she won't give up. I mean she knows what to do here, she's focused on the staging. Of course it's difficult when you're losing your flat while you need to like stay calm to celebrate here because it's a musical festival, it's not about the war or something. But she's great. She's so strong. That's why I've chosen her like back days because I see her, she's a brave woman. She is a brave girl."

Both Baraka and interim U.S. Attorney Alina Habba appeared in court Thursday for a roughly 15-minute procedural hearing before Magistrate Judge Andre Espinosa. The hearing covered mostly scheduling for discovery in the case.
Baraka was arrested Friday outside the Delaney Hall immigration detention center.
A message was sent to the U.S. attorney's office seeking a response to Baraka's comment.

    STORYLINE:
A Wisconsin judge pleaded not guilty Thursday to charges accusing her of helping a man who is illegally in the country evade U.S. immigration authorities seeking to arrest him in her courthouse.
Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Hannah Dugan entered the plea during a brief arraignment in federal court. Magistrate Judge Stephen Dries set a July trial date. Dugan’s lead attorney, Steven Biskupic, told the judge that he expects the trial to last a week.
Dugan, her lawyers and prosecutors left the hearing without speaking to reporters.
    The accusations against Dugan
She is charged with concealing an individual to prevent arrest and obstruction. Prosecutors say she escorted Eduardo Flores-Ruiz and his lawyer out of her courtroom through a back door on April 18 after learning that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents were in the courthouse seeking to arrest him for being in the country illegally. She could face up to six years in prison if convicted on both counts.
Her attorneys say she’s innocent. They filed a motion Wednesday to dismiss the case, saying she was acting in her official capacity as a judge and therefore is immune to prosecution. They also maintain that the federal government violated Wisconsin’s sovereignty by disrupting a state courtroom and prosecuting a state judge.
    A public backlash
Dugan’s arrest has inflamed tensions between Trump administration and Democrats over the president’s sweeping immigration crackdown.
Dozens of demonstrators gathered outside the courthouse ahead of Thursday’s hearing, with some holding signs that read, “Only Fascists Arrest Judges -- Drop the Charges,” “Department of Justice Over-Reach” and “Keep Your Hands Off Our Judges!!” The crowd chanted “Due process rights,” “Hands off our freedom,” and “Si se puede” — Spanish for “Yes, we can” — which is a rallying cry for immigrant rights advocates.
