The hearing covered mostly scheduling for discovery in the case.

  • Emotional scenes at funeral of Israeli woman who was killed on her way to give birth

    6. Relatives crying
    7. SOUNDBITE (Hebrew) Orit Strook, minister for settlement and national missions:
“Our long hand must be much more determined, and much more lethal against whoever dares to shoot a woman who is on her way to give birth and against anyone who pays those who shoot a woman like that.”
    8. Various of relatives crying during funeral ceremony
    9. Wide of mourners
    10. Mourners carrying body for burial
    STORYLINE:
Hundreds of mourners attended the funeral of Tzeela Gez, an Israeli woman killed whilst being driven to hospital to give birth in an attack in the West Bank.
As her husband drove their car through the winding roads of the occupied West Bank late Wednesday, a Palestinian attacker shot at them.
Within hours, Gez, nine months pregnant, was dead.
Doctors barely saved the life of the baby, who is in serious but stable condition.
“You were the light of my life, the most precious gift that I got. Words will never be enough to describe what you were for me, for our cute children, and for so many people whose life changed thanks to your pure soul," Hananel Gez, Tzeela’s husband, said during her funeral on Thursday.
Israel says it is trying to prevent such attacks by waging a monthslong crackdown on West Bank militants that intensified earlier this year.
But the escalating offensive, which has killed hundreds of Palestinians over 19 months, displaced tens of thousands and caused widespread destruction, has ultimately not prevented attacks.
And the latest bloodshed is only likely to fuel a cycle of violence that has persisted for decades between Israelis and Palestinians.
The shooting, especially because the victim was a pregnant mother with three other children, has the potential to ignite vigilante violence against Palestinians by radical Jewish settlers.
They regularly storm Palestinian towns and villages, burning and damaging property, in response to such attacks.
Marauding settlers are rarely held to account for their actions and Palestinians are left to pick up the pieces of the destruction with little recourse to compensation or assistance from Israeli authorities.
The violence in the West Bank escalated when the war in Gaza erupted with Hamas' Oct. 7, 2023, attack on southern Israel.
Israel has staged frequent raids in the territory, especially but not limited to its north, using ground and air power in violence that has killed many militants but also other Palestinians, some of them throwing rocks to protest the incursions as well as others not involved in confrontations.
Israel occupied the West Bank in the 1967 Mideast war, along with Gaza and east Jerusalem, all territories the Palestinians seek for a future independent state. Around 500,000 Jewish settlers now live in about 130 settlements scattered across the West Bank.
Much of the international community views settlements as illegal and an obstacle to Palestinian statehood. Israel views the West Bank as its biblical heartland and believes the fate of the settlements should be determined in peace negotiations, which have been moribund for some 15 years.

    7. Various of rally, people carrying Indian flags
    STORYLINE:
Supporters of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) held rallies in Indian-controlled Kashmir on Thursday, waving Indian flags and chanting pro-India slogans.
At a rally in Pahalgam, the site of a deadly attack on tourists last month, hoteliers, pony riders and tour guides gathered to cheer India's armed forces.
The militaries of India and Pakistan had been engaged in one of their most serious confrontations in decades since last Wednesday, when India struck targets inside Pakistan it said were affiliated with militants responsible for the massacre of 26 tourists last month in Indian-controlled Kashmir.
Pakistan has denied any links to the attackers.
After India’s strikes in Pakistan, the two sides exchanged heavy fire along their de facto borders, followed by missile and drone strikes into each other’s territories, mainly targeting military installations and airbases.
On Saturday, the two countries agreed to a US-brokered ceasefire a day earlier after talks to defuse their most serious military confrontation in decades.
“People rallied in the streets for national unity and sovereignty, coming together to send a message to the enemy that in the future, any hostile action will be met with a strong response,” said Syed Rafiq Shah, a Bharatiya Janata Party supporter attending another rally in the region's main city Srinagar.
Both India and Pakistan administer parts of Kashmir but claim it in its entirety.

  • UN aid chief defends using 'genocide' in Gaza remarks to the Security Council that Israel rejects
    (15 May 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    United Nations - 14 May 2025
    1. Wide of Tom Fletcher at UN headquarters
    2. SOUNDBITE (English) Tom Fletcher, Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator:
“I think I chose my words sort of gently yesterday, and I hope that they speak for themselves. I'm not a lawyer. I'm a humanitarian. My job is to get the aid in to get the attention of the world, to help create the conditions to get that aid in and save as many lives as possible before it's too late. But I also want to make sure that we weren't making the mistake that was made with previous massive breaches of international law, where it hasn't been called out soon enough. And so it was a challenge. It's not for me to decide what we call it, but I want to make sure the international community is focused on this as an issue and is meeting its responsibilities.”
    3. Fletcher at interview
    4. SOUNDBITE (English) Tom Fletcher, Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator:
"We want to deliver. Let us in. Let us do our work. And so that comes through all of our conversations with Israel. But these specific meetings, it's 13 meetings now have been to look at the details of this so-called modality, so-called humanitarian funds as it's been evolving and we've had meetings as well with some of those involved in it, and the Americans too to try to understand, is it something that can be made to work?
Can we find a way to make sure it's compatible with our humanitarian principles - neutrality, impartiality - and so on. So we've made that effort, but it's so far from being able to meet those conditions. As the SG has said, and as I have been saying, and that's why we need to stick to the better plan, our plan A, which is just let us in. We can make sure this aid doesn't get anywhere near Hamas. We have our procedures. We care more than anyone about making sure that aid gets to the children and civilians and women who need it most."
    5. Wide of Fletcher
    6. SOUNDBITE (English) Tom Fletcher, Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator:
“What I have heard is a system that to me feels very dehumanizing of the people who we are there to serve, the people whose needs we are there to meet, that has them, moved around, moved out of their own locations, deliberately displaced into holding pens, expected to show I.D. and so on in a very dehumanizing way that isn't based on humanitarian need. And what's clear, the lawyers say this to us, NGO partners and so on, is that if we were to acquiesce in a system like this in Gaza, we would be undermining our humanitarian principles globally. Others would start to say, well, why can't we distribute aid in this way to the people that we choose should get it and align with military, political strategies. So that's why it's been so difficult for us to make any progress. It's so far from our principles that we've not made the progress that we would have wanted to make.”
    7. Fletcher at UN headquarters
    STORYLINE:
The United Nations’ humanitarian chief has defended using the term “genocide” to describe what aid workers are trying to prevent in Gaza.
Tom Fletcher tells The Associated Press the world shouldn't make the same mistakes seen in past violations of international law, when it wasn’t “called out soon enough.”
Israel vehemently denies the charge, one that many in the international community have been hesitant to make.

"I wish we could live our lives like we used to, we were comfortable. There was no war or anything. It was safe. But now, there is no home nor anything, they wiped out everything. There is nothing, where does one go back to? Even if they said, 'you can go back to Rafah,' where do we go back to? To the stones? Or to the rubble? There is no place at all."
    10. Various of smoke rising after Israeli airstrike
    STORYLINE:
As a 4-year-old, Ghalia Abu Moteir was driven to live in a tent in Khan Younis after her family fled their home in what’s now Israel, escaping advancing Israeli forces.
Now 77 years later, she is now back in a tent under the bombardment of Israel’s campaign in Gaza.
On Thursday, Palestinians across the Middle East commemorated the anniversary of the “Nakba” -- Arabic for “the Catastrophe” -- when some 700,000 Palestinians were expelled by Israeli forces or fled their homes in what is now Israel during the 1948 war that surrounded its creation.
Abu Moteir’s life traces the arc of Palestinians’ exile and displacement from that war to the current one.
Israel’s 19-month-old campaign has flattened much of Gaza, killed more than 51,000 people, driven almost the entire population of 2.3 million from their homes and threatens to push them into famine.
"Today we’re in a bigger Nakba than the Nakba that we saw before,” the 81-year-old Abu Moteir said, speaking outside the tent where she lives with her surviving sons and daughters and 45 grandchildren.
The Gaza Strip was born out of the Nakba.
