    5. SOUNDBITE (English) Lutfi Dervishi, independent political analyst:
"Albania has been waiting 35 years on the doorstep of Europe, and now it has a chance for a couple of days to welcome Europe here. If you could not show a success story in the Balkans, I don't know where it can be.”
    6. Tilt up to decorative flags
    7. Various of a decorations reading "Albania is Europe”
    8. Wide of street
    9. SOUNDBITE (English) Lutfi Dervishi, independent political analyst:
"Regarding the prospect of the Balkan countries to join the EU, I think it's more geopolitical considerations rather than the old way of measuring the success of the country. But it's clear that Albania is a forefront country in the line to join the EU, and hopefully that will be the case by the end of the decade.”
    10. Man with Albania and EU flags on bicycle and man in national dress

    12. Wide of people walking
    13. SOUNDBITE (English) Lutfi Dervishi, independent political analyst:
"In the best-case scenario, EPC, the European Political Community, has a chance and an opportunity in Tirana to go beyond the shades of the EU itself and to show that it can produce more than a talking shop. So it can bring something which is worth, not in terms only of the news, but it's worth for the people of the continent, something is achieved. And we have to bear in mind it's not a democratic club coming here; it’s a mixed plate.”
    14. Various of journalists
    15. Mid of police
    16. Wide of cordon around venue
    17. SOUNDBITE (English) Lutfi Dervishi, independent political analyst: "Zelenskyy’s presence and, as we call, the dedicated lane for Ukraine to join the EU, helps the Balkans. Because it raised the question marks in Brussels. If Ukraine has a dedicated lane, what about the Balkans, which is not the backyard of the EU, but it's a courtyard.”
    18. Various of police vehicles
    19. Tilt down from a mosaic to police talking to people
    STORYLINE:
The leaders of 47 European countries and organizations will gather on Friday for a one-day summit in the Albanian capital Tirana to discuss security and defense challenges across the continent, with Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine now in its fourth year.
The European Political Community summit, or EPC, held under the banner: "New Europe in a new world: unity – cooperation – joint action,” will also address ways to improve the continent’s competitiveness and tackle unauthorized migration.
Officially, the leaders will hold a series of thematic meetings.
Securing Europe and strengthening democratic resilience, boosting European competitiveness and security through innovation and resilience, and an open Europe with secure borders: addressing mobility challenges and fostering youth empowerment are the main topics.
But the EPC is most useful as a place for leaders to meet bilaterally, or in small groups, to weigh in on major European issues.
“Albania has been waiting 35 years on the doorstep of Europe, and now it has a chance for a couple of days to welcome Europe here,” Lutfi Dervishi, an independent political analyst, told the Associated Press.
Among the leaders expected in Tirana on Friday is the Ukrainian president.
But critics claimed it was an attempt by them to put the brakes on European Union enlargement.

    STORYLINE:
Multiple airstrikes hit Gaza’s southern city of Khan Younis overnight into Thursday, killing more than 50 people in a second consecutive night of heavy bombing.
The strikes come as U.S. President Donald Trump visits the Middle East, visiting Gulf states but not Israel.
There had been widespread hope that Trump’s regional visit could usher in a ceasefire deal or renewal of humanitarian aid to Gaza. An Israeli blockade of the territory is now in its third month.
An Associated Press cameraman in Khan Younis counted 10 airstrikes on the city overnight into Thursday, and saw numerous bodies taken to the morgue in the city’s Nasser Hospital.
Some bodies arrived in pieces, with some body bags containing the remains of multiple people.
The hospital’s morgue confirmed 54 people had been killed.
The dead included a journalist working for Qatari television network Al Araby TV, the network announced on social media, saying Hasan Samour had been killed along with 11 members of his family in one of the strikes in Khan Younis.
"Those are my children," said injured mother Safaa Najjar as she mourned her losses.
The Israeli military had no immediate comment on the strikes.
It was the second night of heavy bombing, after airstrikes Wednesday on northern and southern Gaza killed at least 70 people, including almost two dozen children.
Israel has vowed to escalate the war.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed earlier in the week to push ahead with a promised escalation of force in Israel’s war in the Gaza Strip to pursue his aim of destroying the Hamas militant group, which governs Gaza.
In comments released by Netanyahu’s office Tuesday, the prime minister said Israeli forces were days away from entering Gaza “with great strength to complete the mission ... It means destroying Hamas.”
International rights group Human Rights Watch said Thursday that Israel’s stated plan of seizing Gaza and displacing hundreds of thousands of people “inches closer to extermination,” and called on the international community to speak out against it.
The war began when Hamas-led militants killed 1,200 people in an Oct. 7, 2023 intrusion into southern Israel.
Israel’s retaliatory offensive has killed more than 53,000 Palestinians, many of them women and children, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, which does not say how many were combatants.
Almost 3,000 have been killed since Israel broke a ceasefire on March 18, the ministry said.

    STORYLINE:
Sanctions-hit North Korea staged its first international Spring trade fair after the coronavirus pandemic this week.
The event, officially called 'The 23rd Pyongyang Spring International Trade Fair,' runs from Monday 12 May to Friday 16 May.
Before the pandemic, the fair was an annual event for decades. Chinese companies used to take up most of the booths, selling everything from bras and computers to microwaves. And the North Korean people who could get in, would pull out U.S. dollars to buy.
This time, the venue is different, and it’s not clear who is there. The North Korean official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said that companies from Russia, China, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Mongolia, and Thailand took part. But it was not possible to see what they are trying to sell.
Instead, North Korean authorities wanted to highlight their new smartphones, and their new shampoo and skin care products.

  • Maresca admits Chelsea are 'working' on options after Jackson red card
    (15 May 2025)

No takedown necessary for stand alone digital users. All usage subject to rights licensed in contract. For any questions regarding rights restrictions please contact [email protected]
Cobham, England, UK. 15th May, 2025.
    1. 00:00 SOUNDBITE (English): Enzo Maresca, Chelsea manager:
(On the expectations given to him at the beginning of the season):
"So since day one I said that the target that the club gives to me was in two years we want to play the Champions League, okay, since day one. But when you arrive to March and you have been all season, top 4, top 5, it's naturally that the targets is to finish the Champions League. So the reason why it changed from the beginning is because we arrived to March International break I still remember, that we were there all season. So it's normal that then the target became to finish top four or top five. So what changed is that because we have been there all season, the target automatically became (to) finish top four, top five. "
    2. 00:47 SOUNDBITE (English): Enzo Maresca, Chelsea manager:
    (On Nicolas Jackson's red card):
"No, for me it's not about in this case, it's not about the age, because no matter the age you are, if you make a mistake, then it's OK. All of us make mistakes, but if you make the same mistake again, it probably isn't the best thing. I think it's the first red card this season for us, unfortunately it's been for Nico. And then in terms of yellow cards, probably it's something seriously, something that during the summer, because now we have no time during the summer we need to sit and review things and to see the reason why of this yellow card. The amount of them that we can avoid and try to improve for next season. "
    3. 01:33 SOUNDBITE (English): Enzo Maresca, Chelsea manager:
(On line-up without Jackson and what he will change going to face Man United):
"Yeah, it depends a little bit on the game plan. Against the line of five I prefer a real nine because you need to attack in behind and you need the threat, unfortunately we don't have. So, we need to find a different solution. I like fake nine when we face line of four because probably you can link a little bit more but against line of 5 you need people (to) run in behind but it is what it is and we need to find some different solution. "
    4. 02:04 SOUNDBITE (English): Enzo Maresca, Chelsea manager:
(On being two games away from being in Champions League):
"Yeah, absolutely. I think at the beginning of the season we were, as you said, if someone said to us that we need to win the last two games to reach a Champions League spot, probably we were happy. I think overall, during the season, we had moments, for instance, the first five, six months, where we were second, third, so even better. And now we are there and we're gonna try to finish well. "
    5. 02:38 SOUNDBITE (English): Enzo Maresca, Chelsea manager:
    (On options to replace Jackson):
"We are working on that, these are the options that we have. We don't have many options. Unfortunately, Marc Guiu is still injured. He started to train with us, but he's not ready to play from the start. And we are working on different options for Friday night. "
    SOURCE: Agency Pool
    DURATION: 02:58
    STORYLINE:
Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca said he is assessing his attacking options with striker Nicolas Jackson's suspension for Friday's visit of Manchester United having once again shown up his lack of alternatives.

Ambassador David Perdue, former senator and business executive, announced his arrival in a post at X, saying that “I am ready to get to work here and make America safer, stronger, and more prosperous.”
Asked about his arrival at a daily news briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian reiterated that China’s position of handling bilateral ties “based on the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation.”
Perdue arrived days after the U.S. reached a weekend deal with China to temporarily reduce the sky-high tariffs on each other's goods, something U.S. President Donald Trump has referred to as a victory.
Albanese said Yang had recently written to him from a Beijing prison, calling it “a message of profound courage and resilience and hope despite his difficult circumstances.”

He also said that Putin had no plans to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump in the coming days.
The Russian delegation’s arrival in Turkey came after European leaders met Ukrainian President Zelenskyy in Kyiv over the weekend and urged the Kremlin to agree to a full, unconditional 30-day ceasefire as a first step toward peace.
Putin later responded by proposing direct talks with Ukraine in Istanbul Zelenskyy challenged Putin to hold face-to-face talks.
The Russian president didn’t show up in Turkey on Thursday for the proposed direct talks with Zelenskyy, who was waiting for him in the capital of Ankara.
With Putin absent and a Russian delegation there in his stead, it wasn’t clear whether the sides would meet for their first such talks since March 2022.
Putin’s absence punctured hopes of a breakthrough in peace efforts that were given a push in recent months by the Trump administration and Western European leaders.

    1. Various of smoke rising after of several Israeli airstrike hit east of Jabaliya
    STORYLINE:
The Israeli military unleashed massive strikes east of Gaza’s city of Jabaliya Thursday as part of its escalating bombing campaign across the Palestinian enclave.
More than a dozen of people have been killed in attacks targeting their homes and tents in the area, according to hospitals.
Associated Press footage Thursday showed columns of thick smoke rising over the area.
A strike in Jabaliya in northern Gaza hit a complex including a mosque and a small medical clinic, killing 13 people, said the Civil Defense, a first responder agency operating under Gaza's Hamas-run government.
The strikes come as U.S. President Donald Trump visits the Middle East, visiting Gulf states but not Israel.
There had been widespread hope that Trump’s regional visit could usher in a ceasefire deal or renewal of humanitarian aid to Gaza.

    2. Various inside and outside sauna
    3. SOUNDBITE (English) Dorothee Schulte-Basta, sauna ambassador from Vörå:
"I love Finnish sauna culture because it celebrates the freedom of choice, no rules in the sauna. You know, come as you are, everyone's equal in the saunas. Finland has quite a long culture, also, they call it sauna diplomacy. So it always used to play a role also in politics, in negotiations. So it's yeah, you know, a country with 5.5 million people and 3.3 million saunas."

    6. KAJ singing "Baru Bada Bastu"
    STORYLINE:
KAJ are tipped to win Eurovision with a song about saunas – so it’s appropriate that they made a guest appearance at a Finnish bath at the event on Wednesday.
The day after clinching their place in the grand final, by going through in Tuesday’s first semi-final, the Swedish trio treated sauna-goers and fans in Basel to the chorus of their hotly tipped song.
"Baru Bada Bastu" is a celebration of Finnish sauna culture because while KAJ are representing Sweden, they are from Vörå, a Swedish speaking area of Finland.
Dorothee Schulte-Basta is a sauna ambassador and one of the people who set up the hot wooden hut near to the Rhine river in the host city.
All day people of all nationalities enjoyed sweating in the sauna and then cooling off in the river nearby.
Schulte-Basts reckons that sauna culture is one of the reasons why Finland is repeatedly named the happiest place in the world to live.
And, to play it fair, the pop-up is also supporting the Finnish contestant Erika Vikram who is competing for her place in the contest at the semi-final Thursday.
The 2025 Eurovision Song Contest is being held in Basel, Switzerland after Nemo took the crystal trophy for the country last year with "The Code."
