  • Zelenskyy says ceasefire will be number one on agenda for first direct peace talks with Russia since
    (15 May 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Ankara, Turkey - 15 May 2025
    1. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arriving at press-conference
    2. SOUNDBITE (Ukrainian) Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Ukrainian President:
"Regarding the agenda – they will have a mandate to (discuss) a ceasefire, that is number one. So, they will fly there. Although I still believe that Russia continues to treat this meeting unseriously, it does not want to end the war, we will hope that they at least demonstrate something during the meeting."
    3. Zelenskyy listening to question
    4. SOUNDBITE (Ukrainian) Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Ukrainian President:
"We spoke with the President of Turkey – tomorrow morning we will get together with him and join the European Political Community summit in Albania, in the city of Tirana. In fact, this meeting was organized in advance, and there will be more than 40 leaders. These are our short-term plans for the near future."
    5. Reporter asking question
    6. SOUNDBITE (Ukrainian) Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Ukrainian President:
"I believe that the United States of America and Turkey are currently feeling disrespected by Russia, in my opinion. There is no set time for the meeting, no agenda, no high-level delegation. This is a personal sign of disrespect. I'm not saying that the Russians don't respect us — that's already obvious. But for us, it's mutual. However, in this case? It's a lack of respect toward Erdogan, a lack of respect toward Trump."
    7. Zelenskyy listening
    8. SOUNDBITE (Ukrainian) Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Ukrainian President:
"Trump is sending a large group of people, including Secretary of State Rubio. Who are the sides in this war? Russia and Ukraine. Secretary of State Rubio is present. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkey — present. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine — present. Where is the corresponding person from the Russian Federation? This is disrespect not just to Ukraine, but to everyone. Above all, I believe, to Turkey, because the meeting is being held here."
    9. Zelenskyy listening
    STORYLINE:
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Thursday that a ceasefire will be the number one priority on the agenda in the first direct peace talks with Russia since 2022.
While Russian President Vladimir Putin stayed away from a face-to-face meeting with him in Turkey that the Ukrainian leader had proposed, Zelenskyy nonetheless said he would send a delegation led by his defense minister for talks in Istanbul.
He said Russia was disrespecting both the U.S. and Turkey by not sending the corresponding highest ranking officials to the talks.
"Russia continues to treat this meeting unseriously, it does not want to end the war, we will hope that they at least demonstrate something during the meeting," he told a news conference in the Turkish capital Ankara, adding that the Russian delegation doesn’t include “anyone who actually makes decisions."
But he said that to demonstrate to U.S. President Donald Trump that Ukraine is seeking an end to the conflict he had decided to send officials from Ankara to Istanbul — more than 400 kilometers (almost 300 miles) away — for their first direct talks since March 2022, following Russia’s full-scale invasion of its neighbor the previous month.
Putin’s absence punctured hopes of a breakthrough in peace efforts that were given a push in recent months by the Trump administration and Western European leaders amid the intense maneuvering.
It also raised the prospect of intensified international sanctions on Russia that have been threatened by the West.

Cobham, England, UK. 15th May, 2025.
    1. 00:00 SOUNDBITE (English): Enzo Maresca, Chelsea manager:
(On the expectations given to him at the beginning of the season):
"So since day one I said that the target that the club gives to me was in two years we want to play the Champions League, okay, since day one. But when you arrive to March and you have been all season, top 4, top 5, it's naturally that the targets is to finish the Champions League. So the reason why it changed from the beginning is because we arrived to March International break I still remember, that we were there all season. So it's normal that then the target became to finish top four or top five. So what changed is that because we have been there all season, the target automatically became (to) finish top four, top five."
    2. 00:42 SOUNDBITE (English): Enzo Maresca, Chelsea manager:
(On being two games away from being in Champions League):
"Yeah, absolutely. I think at the beginning of the season we were, as you said, if someone said to us that we need to win the last two games to reach a Champions League spot, probably we were happy. I think overall, during the season, we had moments, for instance, the first five, six months, where we were second, third, so even better. And now we are there and we're gonna try to finish well. "

    STORYLINE:
Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca said he is assessing his attacking options with striker Nicolas Jackson's suspension for Friday's visit of Manchester United having once again shown up his lack of alternatives.
Jackson will not play again this season in the Premier League after being dismissed for elbowing Newcastle's Sven Botman last Sunday, leaving the team without a recognised number nine for the remainder of the run-in.
The club's only other senior striker besides Jackson, 19-year-old Marc Guiu, has been injured since February and is yet to score in the league.
The Blues need to win both of their remaining games if they are to keep Champions League qualification in their own hands but will likely be forced to start with either Pedro Neto or Tyrique George filling in in the number nine role against Ruben Amorim's side, while Cole Palmer could also be deployed.
Wingers Neto and George each had a turn up front during the nearly two months that Jackson was out injured earlier in the year but Chelsea struggled for goals for much of that spell, drawing blanks in three of the six matches that the 23-year-old was unable to start.
"We are working on that," said Maresca of his quest for a solution. "These are the options that we have. Marc Guiu is still injured, he's started to train with us but he's not ready to play from the start. We are working on different options for Friday night."

  • Zelenskyy says Russia not taking talks seriously, Ukraine delegation will be headed by defense minis
    (15 May 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Ankara, Turkey - 15 May 2025
    1. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arriving for news conference
    2. SOUNDBITE (Ukrainian) Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Ukrainian President:
"After we understood the level of the Russian delegation, we see that, unfortunately, they are taking the real negotiations very unseriously. So far, we do not see among those present anyone who actually makes decisions. Although I want to remind you, it was Russia who proposed direct negotiations. There was also personal support from President Trump — that the leaders should meet."
    3. Zelenskyy listening to question
    4. SOUNDBITE (Ukrainian) Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Ukrainian President:
"Nevertheless, despite the rather low level of the Russian delegation’s representation, out of respect for President Trump, out of respect for the high-level Turkish delegation and President Erdogan, and still wishing to demonstrate... to attempt at least the first steps toward de-escalation, the first steps toward ending the war — namely, a ceasefire — I have decided to send our delegation to Istanbul. But not everyone, of course."
    5. Reporter asking question
    6. SOUNDBITE (Ukrainian) Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Ukrainian President:
"The head of the Security Service (SBU), the Chief of the General Staff (of the Armed Forces of Ukraine) will not be there. But the delegation will be headed by Ukraine's Minister of Defense (Rustem Umerov), and alongside him will be professionals — military personnel and intelligence officers."
    7. Zelenskyy listening
    STORYLINE:
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Thursday he is sending a team headed by his defense minister to Istanbul for peace talks with a Russian delegation but criticised Russia for not taking the negotiations seriously.
Zelenskyy made the move after Russian President Vladimir Putin stayed away from a face-to-face meeting with him in Turkey that the Ukrainian leader had proposed in a flurry of diplomatic maneuvers last weekend.
Zelenskyy told a news conference in the Turkish capital Ankara the Russian delegation doesn’t include “anyone who actually makes decisions."

It also raised the prospect of intensified international sanctions on Russia that have been threatened by the West.

  • Demonstrators gather outside Supreme Court as justices consider birthright citizenship arguments

    Washington - 15 May 2025
    1. Various of demonstrators in front of the Supreme Court building

    3. Various of demonstrators at rally
    STORYLINE:
The Supreme Court is hearing arguments Thursday in its first case stemming from the blitz of actions that have marked the start of President Donald Trump’s second term.
Before the court are the Trump administration’s emergency appeals of lower court orders putting nationwide holds on the Republican president’s push to deny citizenship to children born to people who are in the United States illegally.
Demonstrators chanted and held signs outside of the building.
Birthright citizenship is among several issues, many related to immigration, that the administration has asked the court to address on an emergency basis, after lower courts acted to slow the president’s agenda.
The justices are also considering the administration’s pleas to end humanitarian parole for more than 500,000 people from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela and to strip other temporary legal protections from another 350,000 Venezuelans. The administration remains locked in legal battles over its efforts to swiftly deport people accused of being gang members to a prison in El Salvador under an 18th century wartime law called the Alien Enemies Act.

    12. SOUNDBITE (English) Keir Starmer, UK Prime Minister:
“Yes, we are in talks with a number of countries about return hubs. And I see them as pretty important innovation and that is consistent with the work that we've done in relation to UK Albania reduction in numbers.”
    13. News conference
    14. SOUNDBITE (English) Keir Starmer, UK Prime Minister:
“Our progress together on reducing small boat numbers has been significant. You just went through the numbers again. That is over a period, a relatively short period, quite an incredible reduction. And I think it's a signal and an example of what can be done when two countries work together in this way. Our Joint Migration Task Force, as you have always emphasized, practical, sleeves rolled up, getting on with the job, rather than endless memos, is working to deter illegal migration.”
    15. Rama speaking
16.SOUNDBITE (English) Keir Starmer, UK Prime Minister:
“It is Putin who is dragging his feet. It is Putin who is causing the delay in a ceasefire. Ukraine has long been clear, several months ago now, that they would have a 30 day unconditional ceasefire. And we have long said that it's Putin who is standing in the way of that peace. He was the aggressor in the first place. There was only one country that started this conflict that was Russia. That was Putin.”
    17. Starmer and Rama leave the hall
    STORYLINE:
Britain is talking with several countries to host rejected asylum seekers as they wait to be deported, the U.K. prime minister said Thursday.
Prime Minister Kier Starmer said on a visit to Albania that the return hub concept was a “really important innovation” that could more effectively tackle irregular migration.
He did not name the countries he was in discussions with or offer more details.
Albania already has a five-year agreement with Italy to shelter up to 36,000 migrants annually while Rome fast-tracks their asylum requests.
Under the deal, Italy would take back any migrants whose requests have been rejected, and they will likely be repatriated.
Children and pregnant women aren't covered by the plan.
Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama said the agreement with Italy was a “one off” issue and that Tirana had turned down several requests for the same deals with other countries.
The British prime minister said a joint task force with Albania has helped significantly reduce the number of Albanian migrants trying to reach the UK.
He added that his government is in talks with Western Balkan countries to set up similar task forces, aiming to cut through the tangle of bureaucracy that hinders progress in reducing migrant arrivals.
The number of Albanians crossing the English Channel in unsafe inflatable rafts in search of higher-paying jobs has dropped from 12,000 in 2022 to some 600 in 2024.
“Quite an incredible reduction,” Starmer said at a news conference with Rama. “And I think it’s a signal and an example of what can be done when two countries work together in this way.”

    4. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Faten Al-Madhoun, owner of distribution food charity:
"I’ve been cooking for people for a year and eight months now, but there is real famine over the past three months. The famine that happened at the beginning of the war, we are suffering from it again now. I used to get support that would accommodate around 10 to 20 people, but today it’s a high number of people (needing food)."

    6. Local resident Um Abed shouting for food
    7. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Um Abed, Beit Lahiya resident:
"I come here from 9 am, I swear from 9 am. And I went home yesterday without food and today I’m going home without food. It’s crowded. Everyone is hungry. I’m not blaming people because everyone is hungry and wants to feed their children. I have a family of 20 people. I have a three-year-old child who’s crying all day because he wants to eat. Isn’t it a shame on them? We want them to stop the war and to allow food in. We want a solution instead of the misery we’re in. We’re tired of this, exhausted from coming to charity kitchens and people pushing each other. We’re not living like normal people. You can’t sleep in your home or even outside or move. They have even forbidden us from food."

    10. Various of smoke rising after Israeli airstrike
    STORYLINE:
Dozens of Palestinians lined up outside a soup kitchen set up amid piles of rubble in northern Gaza in a desperate attempt to obtain food, as Israel’s aid blockade entered its third month.
At the charity kitchen in Beit Lahiya, the hungry crowd of men, women and children jostled for position, holding out empty pots and plastic containers high in the air for a few ladles of watery vegetable soup.
Displaced woman Um Abed, who has 20 family members, said she waited in line from 9 a.m. and went home empty handed for the second day in a row as the number of people far exceeded the available food.
She cried and yelled as she held up her empty pot to the camera.
"We’re tired of this. Exhausted from coming to charity kitchens and people pushing each other. We’re not living like normal people. You can’t sleep in your home or even outside or move. They have even forbidden us from food,” she said, as several children stood nearby, their faces streaked with tears.
At one point, children behind a metal partition screamed and cried out for food, as the kitchen’s four large pots stood empty.
Faten Al-Madhoun, owner of the food distribution charity, said the famine conditions seen near the beginning of the war have begun to return in the past three monts.
Israel’s offensive has obliterated vast swathes of Gaza’s urban landscape and displaced 90% of the population, often multiple times.
It halted the entry of all aid, including food and medication, into the territory on March 2, and international food security experts have warned that Gaza will likely fall into famine if Israel doesn’t lift its blockade and stop its military campaign.
Israel vehemently denies accusations that it is committing genocide in Gaza.

"I’m 81, I’m not afraid for myself. I’m afraid for my children and my 45 grandchildren. Our whole life is terror on terror. Day and night, there are missiles and warplanes above us. We’re not living. If we were dead, it would be more merciful. How long will they keep doing this to us?"

    12. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Ghalia Abu Moteir, displaced resident:
"I wish we could live our lives like we used to, we were comfortable. There was no war or anything. It was safe. But now, there is no home nor anything, they wiped out everything. There is nothing, where does one go back to? Even if they said, 'you can go back to Rafah,' where do we go back to? To the stones? Or to the rubble? There is no place at all."
    13. Various of smoke rising after Israeli airstrike
    14. Various of hundreds of tents that displaced people use as shelter
    STORYLINE:
As a 4-year-old, Ghalia Abu Moteir was driven to live in a tent in Khan Younis after her family fled their home in what’s now Israel, escaping advancing Israeli forces.
Now 77 years later, she is now back in a tent under the bombardment of Israel’s campaign in Gaza.
Abu Moteir’s life traces the arc of Palestinians’ exile and displacement from that war to the current one.
