    STORYLINE:
Multiple airstrikes hit Gaza’s southern city of Khan Younis overnight into Thursday, killing more than 50 people in a second consecutive night of heavy bombing.
The strikes come as U.S. President Donald Trump visits the Middle East, visiting Gulf states but not Israel.
There had been widespread hope that Trump’s regional visit could usher in a ceasefire deal or renewal of humanitarian aid to Gaza. An Israeli blockade of the territory is now in its third month.
An Associated Press cameraman in Khan Younis counted 10 airstrikes on the city overnight into Thursday, and saw numerous bodies taken to the morgue in the city’s Nasser Hospital.
Some bodies arrived in pieces, with some body bags containing the remains of multiple people.
The hospital’s morgue confirmed 54 people had been killed.
The dead included a journalist working for Qatari television network Al Araby TV, the network announced on social media, saying Hasan Samour had been killed along with 11 members of his family in one of the strikes in Khan Younis.
"Those are my children," said injured mother Safaa Najjar as she mourned her losses.
The Israeli military had no immediate comment on the strikes.
It was the second night of heavy bombing, after airstrikes Wednesday on northern and southern Gaza killed at least 70 people, including almost two dozen children.
Israel has vowed to escalate the war.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed earlier in the week to push ahead with a promised escalation of force in Israel’s war in the Gaza Strip to pursue his aim of destroying the Hamas militant group, which governs Gaza.
In comments released by Netanyahu’s office Tuesday, the prime minister said Israeli forces were days away from entering Gaza “with great strength to complete the mission ... It means destroying Hamas.”
International rights group Human Rights Watch said Thursday that Israel’s stated plan of seizing Gaza and displacing hundreds of thousands of people “inches closer to extermination,” and called on the international community to speak out against it.
The war began when Hamas-led militants killed 1,200 people in an Oct. 7, 2023 intrusion into southern Israel.
Almost 3,000 have been killed since Israel broke a ceasefire on March 18, the ministry said.

    STORYLINE:
Australia’s newly reelected Prime Minister Anthony Albanese met with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto Thursday in a visit aiming to strengthen economic and defense ties with its closest major neighbor.
Albanese arrived in Jakarta Wednesday evening, a day after his new government was sworn in, to promote the importance of building stronger ties with Southeast Asia’s largest economy.
Albanese’s center-left Labor Party won a second three-year term in an emphatic election victory May 3.
He was welcomed by Subianto in a ceremony at Merdeka Palace, where he was escorted by dozens of motorized troops and cavalry while about 3,200 schoolchildren waved the flags of both countries along the streets, according to Indonesia's presidential office.
Albanese’s two-day visit is an indication of the countries' strategic closeness. Their discussions will also include food security, energy, trade and other bilateral priorities, Indonesia's Foreign Affairs Ministry said in a statement.
Newly elected Australian prime ministers typically make their first bilateral visit to Asia, usually Indonesia.

    11. SOUNDBITE (English) Jacek Kucharczyk, Polish Institute of Public Affairs president:
"The stakes of these elections is really tremendous for the current coalition and the people concerned with the future of Polish democracy. This is about democratic reform and restoring the rule of law in Poland with cooperation from the new president. For the Law and Justice (Party), the main competitor of the current ruling coalition, it's really a question about their future as a key political actor. Poland now is one of the key players within the EU and key in mobilizing other EU members and international partners towards sustaining Ukrainian resistance to Russia and building up Ukrainians' position vis-à-vis Russia. So if the elections go wrong from the point of view of the ruling coalition then it would also have repercussions for the entire European politics vis-à-vis Russia."

    13. Various of election posters
    STORYLINE:
A war next door in Ukraine. Migration pressure at the borders. Russian sabotage across the region. Doubts about America's commitment to Europe's security.
Security looms large in Poland’s upcoming presidential election — but so do other fundamental issues, including the future of the country’s democracy and its place in Europe.
With 13 candidates in the running, a decisive first-round victory by any one candidate is unlikely.
Poland's geographic location gives added importance to this election at time of war in Ukraine.

  • Daily briefing by spokesperson of China's Foreign Ministry in Beijing
    (15 May 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    China MOFA
    15 May 2025
    Spokesperson: Lin Jian
    Duration 6'06
    STORYLINE:
    1. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen will pay an official visit to China from May 17 to 20. What are China's expectations?
Denmark was one of the first Western countries to recognize and establish diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China. This year marks the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Denmark.
Currently, China-Denmark relations are developing well, with close cooperation in economic, trade, and green innovation. Both sides support multilateralism and free trade, and have a broad consensus on important issues, such as climate change.
China is willing to take this visit as an opportunity to consolidate political mutual trust, deepen practical cooperation, and promote the continuous, healthy, and stable development of the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Denmark.
    2. The 78th World Health Assembly will open on May 19, and the Taiwan region has not yet received an invitation to attend. What is the Chinese government's comment on this?
The Taiwan region of China has no basis, reason, or right to participate in the World Health Assembly without the consent of the Chinese central government. The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities in Taiwan stubbornly adhere to the separatist stance of Taiwan independence, leading to the loss of the political foundation for Taiwan's participation in the World Health Assembly.
To uphold the one-China principle and safeguard the solemnity and authority of relevant United Nations General Assembly and World Health Assembly resolutions, China has decided not to agree to Taiwan's participation in this year's World Health Assembly.
For some time, the DPP authorities and a few countries have blatantly backpedaled on historical issues, deliberately distorting and challenging UN General Assembly Resolution 2758, and attempting to challenge the one-China principle. This is not only a challenge to China's sovereignty and territorial integrity but also a challenge to international justice and universal consensus, and a challenge to the post-World War II international order.
China's decision not to agree to Taiwan's participation in this year's World Health Assembly has received widespread understanding and support from the international community. This shows that adherence to the one-China principle is the will of the people, the trend of the times, and the right thing to do.
The international community's adherence to the one-China principle is unchallengeable and unshakable. No matter what the DPP authorities say or do, they cannot change the fact that both sides of the Taiwan Strait belong to one China, and Taiwan is a part of China. They cannot stop the historical trend of China's inevitable and eventual reunification. Taiwan independence is a dead end, and seeking independence with provocations is doomed to fail.
    3. The Australian writer Yang Hengjun has detailed his experience of unbearable suffering in China where he has been jailed since 2019 on charges of espionage that he denies in a letter addressed to Australian Prime Minister Albanese released to the media this week. Do you have any comments on his description of suffering in China and the Australian government’s petitions for his release?
    4. China and Mongolia held a groundbreaking ceremony for the Gants Mod-Gashuunsukhait cross-border railway on May 14. What is China's comment on this?
