  • Pro-Palestinian protesters march in Basel against Israel's participation in Eurovision Song Contest

    2. Mid of banner reading (English) "Basel - Unite for Palestine"
    3. SOUNDBITE (English) Tove Bjoernsen, protester: ++SOUNDBITE STARTS ON SHOT1 AND IS OVERLAID BY SHOT2 AND PARTIALLY BY SHOT4++
"We also have the Eurovision Song Contest in Basel, which is an amazing contest. I always loved it. But at the same time it is really sad having this huge power of Israel competing. And, you know, like, Russia wasn't allowed to compete for example, because of the war crimes they committed and at the same time with Israel, with Moroccan oil being like a main sponsor. So it's not really, like, we're not wondering that they're not letting them go."
    4. Various of protesters marching holding signs
    5. SOUNDBITE (English) Lea Kobler, protester: ++SOUNDBITE STARTS ON PREVIOUS SHOT AND IS PARTIALLY OVERLAID BY SHOT6++
"It should be a happy occasion that Eurovision is finally in Switzerland, but it's not, it's not. How can we rightfully exclude Russia, but we're still welcoming Israel, who is doing horrendous things to so many people, and we just welcome them here and parade them and say 'oh hello', and they're committing a genocide and war crimes and nobody's doing anything."
    6. Various of protesters marching
    STORYLINE:
Pro-Palestinian demonstrators on Wednesday rallied in the Swiss city of Basel where the Eurovision Song Contest is being held this week.
Protesters with Palestinian flags and banners took part in a "silent" march along one of the city's main streets to demonstrate against Israel’s participation in the pan-continental pop competition.
The Israeli Eurovision entry this year is singer Yuval Raphael, who will perform in the second semifinal Thursday.
Raphael is a survivor of Hamas militants’ October 7, 2023, attack on southern Israel that killed 1,200 people and triggered the war in Gaza.
More than 52,800 people in Gaza have been killed in Israel’s retaliatory offensive, according to the territory’s health ministry.
Tove Bjoernsen, a local protester and Eurovision fan, said it was "really sad" that Israel was allowed to participate in the contest amid the ongoing war.
Lea Kobler, another protester, echoed this sentiment.
"How can we rightfully exclude Russia, but we're still welcoming Israel, who is doing horrendous things to so many people?," Kobler said.
Israel has competed in Eurovision for more than 50 years, and won four times.
But last year’s event in the Swedish city of Malmo drew large demonstrations calling for Israel to be kicked out of the contest over its conduct of its war against Hamas in Gaza.
More than 70 former participants, including 2017 winner Salvador Sobral from Portugal, 2023 U.K. entry Mae Muller and La Zarra, who competed for France in 2023, signed a letter calling for Israel to be excluded. They noted that Russia has been banned since its 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
The European Broadcasting Union, which runs Eurovision, pointed out that Israel is represented by its public broadcaster, KAN, not the government.

  • Colombian lawmakers reject president's labor reform referendum
    (15 May 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:

    Bogota, Colombia - 14 May 2025
    1. Wide of senators during labor reform debate
    2. Mid of senators as Gonzalez announces vote result UPSOUND Diego Gonzalez, Senate Secretary, (Spanish): "47 votes in favor, 49 against."
    3. Senators celebrating and chanting
    4. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Ivan Cepeda, Senator for the Alternative Democratic Pole party:
“You want to frame this in terms that there's an electoral strategy behind this. That's ok, we respect your position. What moved us to create this referendum was to make social reform. This is our position. You want to avoid the referendum, we understand you, but then let's not disguise your intentions."
    5. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Carlos Meisel, Senator for the Democratic Centre party:
“Voting in favor of the referendum is not voting in favor of the people, nor in favor of the workers. It's a vote in favor of President Gustavo Petro, to vote in favor of Petro's project. This has to be clear to all the parties in this Congress."
    STORYLINE:
Lawmakers in Colombia on Wednesday once again blocked President Gustavo Petro's efforts to overhaul the country’s labor laws, this time by rejecting a referendum that would have asked voters whether workdays should be limited to eight hours and whether workers should receive double pay if they work during holidays.
Petro asked Congress earlier this month to approve the 12-question referendum to give voters a chance to decide on the changes that lawmakers themselves had already rejected twice.
He had warned lawmakers against blocking the referendum, saying before thousands of people gathered for a Labor Day demonstration on May 1 that if they did not approve it, Colombians would punish them at the polls during the 2026 legislative elections.
After an intense debate Wednesday, 49 senators voted against the measure and 47 in favor.
Petro, Colombia's first leftist president, characterized the vote as fraudulent.
He has repeatedly accused lawmakers of blocking his social initiatives and ignoring the demands of Colombians.
Had lawmakers approved the referendum, voters would have answered questions such as whether daytime workdays should end at 6 p.m. and whether open-ended contracts should be offered to workers to prioritize job stability.
In a rarely used maneuver, a group of congressmen on Wednesday successfully appealed the March dismissal of Petro's proposed labor reform.
The move allows lawmakers to again debate his proposals and potentially approve them. Lawmakers face a June 20 deadline to do so.

"I'm so happy to be here, as are the rest of my family."
    10. Rose's family applauding
    11. Pan of crowd applauding
    STORYLINE:
Pete Rose was celebrated by the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday night, a day after baseball’s career hits leader was posthumously removed from Major League Baseball’s permanent ineligibility list.
There were chants of “Pete! Pete!” at Great American Ball Park.
There was a pregame moment of silence, and a choir from Rose's Cincinnati high school performed the national anthem.
The No. 14 was everywhere, from the replica jerseys in the stands to the highlights shown on the videoboard.
It was the type of all-out effort that Rose himself would have appreciated.
Hall of Fame shortstop Barry Larkin and Eric Davis — who played for Rose when he managed the Reds — shared stories about their former manager during a pregame panel, joined by former Rose teammate George Foster.
Members of Rose's family delivered the game ball before Cincinnati's 4-2 loss to the Chicago White Sox.
Rose, who died in September at age 83, played for the Reds in 19 of his 24 seasons, winning two of his three World Series championships with his hometown team.
His career was tarnished by a gambling scandal that led to a permanent ban on August 23, 1989.
An investigation commissioned by Major League Baseball concluded Rose — a 17-time All-Star who finished with 4,256 hits — repeatedly bet on the Reds as a player and manager of the team from 1985-87, a violation of a long-standing MLB rule.
Commissioner Rob Manfred announced Tuesday he was changing the league’s policy on permanent ineligibility, saying bans would expire at death.

    STORYLINE:
Crowds poured into the streets of Uruguay’s capital on Wednesday to bid a poignant farewell to former President José Mujica.
Mujica, who died Tuesday, was a former guerrilla who became a pioneering leader and icon of the Latin American left, remembered most for his humility, simple lifestyle and ideological earnestness.
"Thanks to all that he did for the poor, the president of the poor, youth, and students," said mourner Marlene Acosta.
"Everybody loves him. Even his adversaries love him and recognize his qualities.”
Thousands of people mourning the death of their former leader, affectionately known as “Pepe,” joined the procession as Mujica's flag-furled coffin, borne on a gun carriage, made its way through downtown Montevideo.
The cortege culminated nearly four hours later at the country's parliament, where banners, wreaths, handwritten notes and portraits littered the lawn and emotions ran high.
“Farewell, Pepe” was painted across the walls of the historic Legislative Palace.

    STORYLINE:
A British-South African swimmer aims to become the first person to swim around Martha's Vineyard, a popular tourist destination south of Cape Cod.
Lewis Pugh will attempt the 62-mile (100-kilometer) swim in 47 degrees Fahrenheit (8 degrees Celsius) water during the start of white shark migration season.
The swim is planned to correspond with the 50th anniversary of “Jaws” – a blockbuster film that helped shape public perception of the apex marine animals as evil predators.
The 55-year-old Pugh hopes his endurance swim in waters populated by great white sharks will help to change public perception of the vulnerable animals.
He says they were maligned by the blockbuster film as “villains, as cold-blooded killers."

"Just to explain why sharks are so important, perhaps I can give a terrestrial example. I mean, imagine in Africa if you killed all the lions, and then you're going to find that all the zebras start multiplying and then the gazelles start multiplying and the wildebeest start multiplying and they start eating all the grass and all the bush and all of the vegetation, and very soon you have an ecological collapse. The exact same thing happens when you take out all the sharks. Very, very soon you have a watery desert."

    14. SOUNDBITE (English) Lewis Pugh, Endurance Swimmer:
"So, I think this is going to be one of the most challenging swims of my life. It's got the big three. It's long. I think it's going to take me 12 days to undertake. Number two, the water is really cold. Eight degrees centigrade, about 47 degrees Fahrenheit. And then lastly, this is a global shark hotspot, great white sharks. And so, it's got absolutely everything. So, I it's going to test me both physically, but also mentally."

    17. SOUNDBITE (English) Lewis Pugh, Endurance Swimmer:
"These are very, very special animals. I mean, they have survived five mass extinctions. They're older than a dinosaur. And so now I look at sharks very, very differently. Sure, I'm in the water, I am swimming with them, and I'm on the surface, so ... so ... you know, I am frightened, but I'm not terrified. What I am terrified of, though, is a world without sharks or without predators."

  • Protests after Missouri lawmakers approve referendum to repeal abortion-rights amendment
    (15 May 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Jefferson City, Missouri - 14 May 2025
    1. Various of protesters holding up signs opposing Missouri abortion ban and chanting UPSOUND (English): "Stop the ban"
    STORYLINE:
Six months after Missouri voters approved an abortion-rights amendment, Republican state lawmakers on Wednesday approved a new referendum that would seek the amendment's repeal and instead ban most abortions with exceptions for rape an incest.
The newly proposed constitutional amendment would go back to voters in November 2026, or sooner, if Republican Gov. Mike Kehoe calls a special election before then.
Republican senators used a series of rare procedural moves to cut off discussion by opposing Democrats before passing the proposed abortion-rights revision by a 21-11 vote.
The measure passed the Republican-led House last month.
Immediately after the vote, protesters erupted with chants of “Stop the ban!” and were ushered out of the Senate chamber.
The Senate then blocked further Democratic debate and gave final approval to a separate measure repealing provisions of a voter-approved law guaranteeing paid sick leave for workers and cost-of-living increases to the minimum wage.
That measure does not go back to the ballot. It will instead become law when signed by Kehoe, who has expressed his support for it.
After taking the sweeping votes, the Senate effectively ended its annual legislative session — two days ahead of a constitutional deadline to wrap up work.
Democrats were outraged by the legislative actions and vowed to retaliate by slowing down any Senate work next year.
“Our rights are under attack,” Democratic state Sen. Brian Williams said during debate.
He accused Republicans of “trying to overturn the will of the voters.”
Republicans contend they are simply giving voters a second chance on abortion — and are confident they will change their minds because of the new rape and incest exceptions.

  • Colombian lawmakers reject president's labor reform referendum

    8. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Carlos Meisel, Senator for the Democratic Centre party:
“Voting in favor of the referendum is not voting in favor of the people nor in favor of the workers. It's a vote in favor of (Colombian President, Gustavo) Petro, to vote in favor Petro's project. This has to be clear to all the parties in this Congress."
    9. Mid of senators as Gonzalez announces vote result UPSOUND Diego Gonzalez, Senate Secretary, (Spanish): "47 votes in favor, 49 against."
    10. Various of senators celebrating and chanting
    11. Various exteriors of Congress
