STORYLINE:

A light drizzle off the North Sea washed tens of thousands of cars ready to load on a giant cargo ship — all with a brand new increase in price thanks to American tariffs rolling out worldwide.

Belgium’s coastline is one of the chokepoints of the global trade in automobiles — brought by trains and trucks from the factories of Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, and BMW and others to ship to customers overseas in the United Kingdom, Asia, the Middle East, South America and North America.

The port of Zeebrugge exports about 1.8 million cars every year from Europe around the world.

And at just one terminal run by Internation Car Operators, about 70,000 cars sat waiting on teams of drivers in white gloves to drive them into a massive container ship shaped like a shoe box.

When Trump initially announced global tariffs on cars, manufacturers scrambled to get their vehicles to customers before the tariff deadline.

But following an agreement between Trump and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, the uncertainty is giving way to business-as-usual — just with a heftier price tag for consumers.

The auto industry in Europe celebrated the deal, but cautioned that more negotiations are needed — noting that higher tariffs from the US on European cars will continue to negatively impact the industry.

The day after their village in the West Bank was attacked, Palestinians examined the wreckage and mourned the loss of a man they said died in the incident.

Witnesses in Silwad, a village northeast of Ramallah, said Thursday that Israeli troops fired live bullets and tear gas at unarmed residents after settlers set fire to homes and cars.

Rafat Hamed, whose home and cars were set on fire, said he woke up in the middle of the night to noises, before finding his car had been set alight.

Rescue workers were seen Thursday pulling bodies out of the wreckage of a building destroyed by a major Russian attack on Ukraine's capital.

Overnight missile and drone attacks overnight on Kyiv killed at least 13 people, including a 6-year-old boy, and wounded 132 others, authorities said Thursday.

A 5-month-old girl was among 14 children wounded, Ukraine’s Emergency Service said.

It was the highest number of children injured in a single attack on Kyiv since the start of Russia’s invasion three years ago, according to public records consulted by The Associated Press.

A large part of a nine-story residential building collapsed in the attack, City Military Administration head Tymur Tkachenko said.

Rescue teams were searching for people trapped under the rubble.

Russia fired 309 Shahed and decoy drones, and eight Iskander-K cruise missiles overnight, the Ukrainian air force said.

Ukrainian air defenses intercepted and jammed 288 strike drones and three missiles.

Five missiles and 21 drones struck targets.

STORYLINE:

A New York City police officer killed during a shooting at a Manhattan office tower is being laid to rest.

The funeral of Officer Didarul Islam will take place Thursday at Parkchester Jame Masjid Funeral Home in the Bronx.

The 36-year-old will then be buried at a cemetery in New Jersey.

Islam was among four people fatally shot Monday in a midtown building housing the National Football League’s headquarters.

The gunman also shot and wounded a fifth victim before killing himself.

An immigrant from Bangladesh, Islam had worked his way up the nation’s largest police force, serving as a school safety agent before becoming a patrol officer.

STORYLINE:

The president of a French skincare company warned on Thursday new tariffs set to be imposed on European products by the U.S. were going to be a "tough blow" for the business.

The United States and the European Union agreed on Sunday to a trade framework setting a 15% tariff on most goods, staving off — at least for now — far higher import duties on both sides that might have sent shock waves through economies around the globe.

Alexis Wolkowinski, President of Yon-Ka which has been operating in the U.S. for nearly 40 years, said the new duty was "very difficult" for the company and a few measures had already been taken to deal with the tariff.

Roughly 25% of Yon-Ka’s global turnover comes from the United States, Wolkowinski said.

With the added burden of a weaker dollar against the euro, the tariff adds further pressure on margins.

A modest price increase of 3–4% is likely in the coming months — far from enough to offset the added costs.

"There's going to be a very limited price hike in line with what we tend to do every year or every other year," he said.

STORYLINE:

Scores of Palestinians in Zawaida ran toward airdropped-food aid on Thursday, with some describing the “complete humiliation" of having to fight over scraps from the dropped parcels.

Eslam al- Telbany, a displaced woman from Jabalia, said she was carrying a bottle of cooking oil and a sack of flour when she was attacked and bitten, ultimately dropping the items and returning home without aid.

“I went and my children prayed that I’d return with food. They haven't eaten or drank anything for two days. This breaks me, the fact that they’re waiting for me to feed them,” she said as she wept.

Ahmed al-Khatib said someone stole a bag of flour from him, and he broke a tooth in the struggle.

At least 91 Palestinians were killed and more than 600 wounded while attempting to get aid in the past 24 hours, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. This includes 54 people killed while awaiting food in northern Gaza near the Zikim crossing on Wednesday, the ministry said.

Scores of people screamed as aid fell from the sky, rushing toward areas in which it dropped.

Dozens pushed and fought each other, desperate to grab whatever they could from the air-dropped parcels.

"We die just so we can obtain a bag of rice or a kilo of flour for our children,” said Ahmed al-Mubasher, calling for nations around the world to exert pressure for border crossings to open.

Meanwhile, Rana Attia, another displaced woman, said people felt more dignified as they received messages on their phones informing them to head to specific locations to get their share of food aid instead of having to randomly chase aid under scorching heat.

“We’re like dogs chasing after a bone. Why do they throw things like that. We don’t want them to help us that way,” she said.
