House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer has sought testimony from nearly a dozen former Biden aides as he conducts his investigation, including another former White House chiefs of staff Jeff Zients and Ron Klain; former senior adviser Anita Dunn; former deputy chief of staff Bruce Reed, former counselor to the president Steve Ricchetti, former deputy chief of staff Annie Tomasini and a former assistant to the president, Ashley Williams.

Democrats have been dismissive of the Republican probe as mere political theater.

But many Republicans see the investigation as a top priority for their caucus and a politically salient issue for voters ahead of the midterm election. The Trump White House has launched its own probe into Biden’s age while Senate Republicans have also held hearings on the topic.

STORYLINE:

Scores of Palestinians in Zawaida ran toward airdropped-food aid on Thursday as border crossings continue to be closed amid severe food insecurity across the Gaza Strip.

Eslam al- Telbany, a displaced woman from Jabalia, said she was carrying a bottle of cooking oil and a sack of flour when she was attacked and bitten, ultimately dropping the items and returning home without aid.

“I went and my children prayed that I’d return with food. They haven't eaten or drank anything for two days. This breaks me, the fact that they’re waiting for me to feed them,” she said as she wept.

Ahmed al-Khatib said someone stole a bag of flour from him, and he broke a tooth in the struggle.

Scores of people screamed as aid fell from the sky, rushing toward areas in which it dropped.

Dozens pushed and fought each other, desperate to grab whatever they could from the air-dropped parcels.

STORYLINE:

A New York City police officer killed during a shooting at a Manhattan office tower is being laid to rest.

The funeral of Officer Didarul Islam will take place Thursday at Parkchester Jame Masjid Funeral Home in the Bronx.

The 36-year-old will then be buried at a cemetery in New Jersey.

Islam was among four people fatally shot Monday in a midtown building housing the National Football League’s headquarters.

The gunman also shot and wounded a fifth victim before killing himself.

An immigrant from Bangladesh, Islam had worked his way up the nation’s largest police force, serving as a school safety agent before becoming a patrol officer.

It has statehood as a starting point for those negotiations, rather than a certainly not assured endpoint. But mostly I think it was the international community, these friends, the UK, potentially Canada, really seeing that the policy they've always had, this idea of committing to a two-state solution to Palestinian self-determination, was going to be completely, it was going to be unable to be reached if the current policies from the current Israeli government continued and they felt the need to do this now, while there was still a possibility to do so."

"There's a couple of different ways to recognize a state. This probably will come from France and the UK in this UN vote. But again, France and the UK know that that does not mean Palestine will become a full state under the United Nations. They're currently what's considered an observer state, but they don't have full membership as a voting member. To get that, you would need all of the Security Council members to agree to that and the United States has, you know, very consistently indicated they would not support that. But what this would do is put the US in the position to be the only state of the five members of the Security Council to still oppose this move. And it really does highlight how just isolated the US is in that decision in comparison to the rest of the world, quite frankly. So there's that on that hand. At the same time, states can make bilateral moves also to recognize another state. That can be, you know, increasing the status of the current Palestinian mission in London to an embassy, potentially having some sort of ambassador role here in Palestine. No one is exactly sure what these steps would look like right now. Again, still pretty symbolic at the end of the day when we're talking about the bigger issues here, but these kinds of indica... STORYLINE:

International airdrops of aid were continuing on Thursday, but many of the parcels were landing in areas that Palestinians have been told to evacuate.

Dozens of Palestinians risked their lives Tuesday, going into the Mediterranean Sea to retrieve whatever they could from aid airdrops that landed in the water. One person said it was “humiliation, not aid.”

Under heavy international pressure, Israel announced a series of measures over the weekend to facilitate the entry of more international aid to Gaza, but aid workers say much more is needed.

Israel's military offensive and blockade have led to the “worst-case scenario of famine” in the coastal territory of some 2 million Palestinians, according to the leading international authority on hunger crises.

The Israeli defense body in charge of coordinating humanitarian aid in Gaza said 270 trucks of aid entered Gaza on Wednesday, and 32 pallets of aid were airdropped into the Strip.

That amount is far lower than the 500 to 600 trucks per day that aid organizations say are needed.

The United Nations is still struggling to deliver the aid that does enter the strip, with most trucks unloaded by crowds in zones controlled by the Israeli military.

At least 91 Palestinians were killed and more than 600 wounded while attempting to get aid in the past 24 hours, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.

This includes 54 people killed while awaiting food in northern Gaza near the Zikim crossing on Wednesday, the ministry said.

The toll is expected to rise further as many of those killed or wounded were brought to isolated, smaller hospitals in northern Gaza and have not yet been counted.

Palestinians in Ramallah welcomed on Thursday an announcement by the Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on recognizing a Palestinian state.

Canada will recognize a Palestinian state in September, Carney announced on Wednesday, the latest in a series of symbolic announcements that are part of a broader global shift against Israel’s policies in Gaza.

Omar Awadallah, the assistant minister of foreign affairs welcomed the announcement as "a step in the right direction".

China said on Thursday that it "welcomes" all parties in Myanmar to solve disputes through “political means” after Myanmar’s military government announced it was ending the state of emergency that it declared more than four years ago.

“We always support Myanmar’s efforts to maintain national stability, achieve peace and reconciliation, pursue a development path suited to its national conditions, and steadily advance its domestic political agenda,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said.

The announcement came as the last of seven consecutive six-month emergency rule decrees was set to expire on Thursday at midnight.

The military imposed emergency rule after it seized power from the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi in February 2021.

Separately, Guo called on the U.S. to provide “a fair, just, and non-discriminatory business environment” for all companies after President Donald Trump signed an executive order to end a duty-free exemption on low-value packages, dubbed as "de minimis" shipments.
