STORYLINE:

A 302-pound (137 kilogram) loggerhead sea turtle named Pennywise made its way back into the Atlantic Ocean Wednesday morning.

The adult female was found stranded off Florida’s coast in May after suffering significant trauma from a boat strike. After treatment, Loggerhead Marinelife Center’s veterinary team has determined she is now healthy and strong enough to return to her natural habitat.

The center had to transport the turtle to a horse clinic for diagnostic imaging because she was too large to fit inside the commonly used CT machines. It was there the team discovered that Pennywise was full of eggs.

With sea turtle nesting season underway, Pennywise now has the chance to lay her eggs and continue her vital role in the marine ecosystem.

Because nesting season in Florida runs from March 1 to Oct. 31, officials at Loggerhead Marinelife Center are encouraging boaters to slow down and to be especially mindful in what they refer to as the Sea Turtle Protection Zone, which extends a mile (1.6 kilometers) off the coast.

All sea turtles are considered endangered or threatened species.

STORYLINE:

A group of Palestinians in Ramallah in the Israeli-occupied West Bank have launched a hunger strike to denounce the devastating war in the Gaza Strip.

It comes as Palestinians in the Gaza Strip contend with war and hunger 21 months into the offensive Israel launched in response to Hamas’ Oct. 7, 2023, attack.

The hunger strike started on Thursday with 11 people and expanded to 30 by Tuesday.

"This is practically a cry to the Palestinian people first and foremost, that we have a duty toward Gaza and that we must act now to stop this crime," said said Omar Assaf, a participant in the hunger strike.

More than 60,000 Palestinians have been killed during the Israel-Hamas war, Gaza’s Health Ministry said Tuesday.

The Israeli offensive has destroyed vast areas of Gaza, displaced around 90% of the population and fuelled a catastrophic humanitarian crisis.

Experts warned Tuesday that the territory of about 2 million Palestinians is on the brink of famine after Israeli restrictions and a breakdown of security have made it nearly impossible to safely deliver aid.

The participants in the hunger strike in Ramallah said they were forgoing food in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.

STORYLINE:

Authorities recommended evacuating coastal areas in Peru on Wednesday due to possible tsunami waves expected to arrive after 1500 GMT, following one of the most powerful earthquakes ever recorded in Russia’s far east.

Some municipalities in the capital put up signs warning pedestrians to stay away from the shore and closed road access to coastal zones.

However, local television stations showed Wednesday morning some fishermen, swimmers, and surfers remaining reluctant to leave the water.

In Chile, the National Disaster Prevention and Response Service (Senapred) raised the tsunami alert to red for the entire coastal border.

Senapred recommended that evacuees prepare for the emergency with kits including toilet paper, a battery-powered radio, water, canned food, a first-aid kit, flashlights, and a lighter, among other basic supplies.

Taunami warnings were issued in Russia, Japan, Hawaii and the West Coast of the United States after an 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of the Russian Far East.

The quake was one of the most powerful ever recorded.

Several people were injured, but none seriously, and no major damage has been reported so far.

President Donald Trump says he'll impose a 25% tariff on goods from India, plus an additional import tax because of India’s purchasing of Russian oil.

Trump said Wednesday that India “is our friend” but its “Tariffs are far too high” on U.S. goods.

 

Kevin Hassett, the director of the National Economic Council, was at the White House on Wednesday.

 

“India's had a market that’s been pretty much close to American products, and we've been wide open to theirs. And I think President Trump is frustrated with the progress we've made with India, but feels that a 25 percent tariff will address and remedy the situation I n a way that's good for the American people,” Hassett said.

 

As a result, Trump intends to charge an additional “penalty” starting Friday as part of the launch of his administration’s revised tariffs on multiple countries. The director general of the Federation of Indian Export Organisations says new tariffs could put India at a disadvantage relative to Vietnam, Bangladesh and China

The chief of police in a resort town in Maine has called for an investigation into the arrest by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement of one of its officers, whom the chief said was federally approved to work in the country in May.

ICE arrested Old Orchard Beach Police Department reserve officer Jon Luke Evans, of Jamaica, on July 25. The agency said Evans was illegally present in the U.S. and unlawfully attempted to purchase a firearm.

ICE said in a Monday statement that Evans had legally entered the U.S. in September 2023 and violated the terms of his admission by overstaying his visa. But Old Orchard Beach Police Chief Elise Chard said in her own Monday statement that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security had verified that Evans was authorized to work in the U.S. in May of this year.

The Old Orchard Beach Police Department and ICE officials did not respond to requests for a status update about Evans' case. It was unclear on Tuesday if he had access to an attorney.
