STORYLINE:

A trial began Wednesday in Indonesia against an American man accused of misusing his tourist visa by producing and selling pornographic videos online.

The trial at the South Jakarta District Court was held behind closed doors. Indonesia’s Criminal Procedure Law says judges have the authority to limit public access to a trial if the case relates to pornography.

Taylor Kirby Whitemore, 39, was arrested on March 25 by Immigration Enforcement officers when he was about to fly from Bali to Malaysia.

A cyber patrol team found promotional posts of paid pornographic content featuring Whitemore and local women, said Yuldi Yusman, the acting director general of immigration.

Whitemore faces up to five years in prison and a fine of up to 500 million rupiah ($30,540) if found guilty.

His Indonesian lawyer, Erwin Siregar, said his client was only accused of violating a tourist visa, which generally does not lead to court proceedings but instead results in deportation.

“This is the first time an immigration violation has been brought to a criminal court,” Siregar said, “This should simply be an administrative sanction, requiring the person to be summoned and then repatriated to their country.”

Siregar acknowledged that Whitemore had improperly used a visa granted by the Indonesian government.

Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim-majority country, has strict laws against the production and distribution of pornography.

The government regularly instructs internet service providers to block access to websites containing such material.

STORYLINE:

Humanitarian aid continued to be dropped by planes over the Gaza Strip on Wednesday, amid mounting pressure over the spiraling hunger crisis in the enclave.

Aid was seen in the skies over Deir al-Balah and Khan Younis.

Israel announced a series of measures over the weekend to increase the flow of aid, including expanded humanitarian corridors and international aid drops.

U.N. officials say there has been little change on the ground so far, and much more is needed.

The airdrops came after the leading international authority on food crises said Tuesday that the “worst-case scenario of famine is currently playing out in the Gaza Strip,” predicting “widespread death” without immediate action.

U.N. agencies and aid groups have long expressed skepticism about aid drops over Gaza, saying they are more expensive and less effective than other methods.

The U.K. will recognize a Palestinian state in September unless Israel agrees to a ceasefire in Gaza, allows the U.N. to bring in aid and takes other steps toward long-term peace, Starmer said Tuesday.

STORYLINE:

Scores of Palestinians in the town of Zawaida risked their lives on Tuesday, rowing, running and swimming into the sea to retrieve whatever they could from aid airdrops which had landed in the water.

While some were able to salvage food from the sea, including flour, sugar, tea, cooking oil, rice, and biscuits, much of the aid was drenched.

Kamel Qoraan, a Zawaida resident, swam back to shore with only a soaked bag of tea powder, and said that the airdrop was "humiliation, not aid".

Still, some seemed relieved to get any food at all, including one boy who smiled as he clutched a small sack of flour, while another man managed to grab half a can of beans.

Meanwhile, Momen Abu Etayya, a resident of Zawaida, said his son urged him to chase the airdrops, even though they were falling far from their location.

“When I came to try and fetch the aid in the sea, I almost drowned," he said.

"I only did that for my boy as he made me swear to bring him something to eat," Etayya added, showing the camera the only three soggy biscuit packets he was able to salvage from the aiddrops.

The airdrops come as part of a series of measures introduced by Israel over the weekend to increase the flow of aid, as the state faces mounting international pressure to ease an increasingly dire humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip. Despite the airdrops in recent days, U.N. officials say there has been little change on the ground so far, and much more is needed.
