STORYLINE:

A plane was seen dropping aid over the Gaza Strip on Sunday, as Israel launched a series of steps to alleviate the humanitarian crisis there.

The drop came hours after Israel carried dropped packages of aid with flour, sugar and canned food into the Palestinian territory.

The Israeli military on Sunday also began a limited pause in fighting in three populated areas of Gaza for 10 hours a day.

It said it would begin a daily “tactical pause” in Gaza City, Deir al-Balah and Muwasi, three areas of the territory with large populations.

It would help “increase the scale of humanitarian aid” entering, it added.

The military also said that it would put in place secure routes for aid delivery.

The easing of the restrictions came amid concerns over surging hunger in the territory.

STORYLINE:

Thailand and Cambodia on Sunday signaled their readiness to negotiate an end to their border dispute following mediation efforts by the U.S. president.

The fighting, now in its fourth day, has killed at least 34 people and displaced more than 168,000.

Despite the diplomatic efforts, fighting continued on Sunday along parts of the border, with both sides reporting renewed shelling and troop movements.

More than 131,000 people in Thailand have evacuated to safe locations and over 37,000 people fled from three Cambodian provinces.

Many border villages are mostly deserted, with many schools and hospitals shut.

The fighting first flared Thursday after a land mine explosion along the border wounded five Thai soldiers.

Both sides blame each other for starting the clashes.

The 500-mile (800-kilometer) frontier has been disputed for decades, but past confrontations have been limited and brief.

Emergency vehicles and forensic teams were gathered on Sunday in the parking lot of the shopping centre that houses several other retail stores.

The attack in Traverse City left six people in a critical condition in what a Michigan sheriff said appeared to be a random act.

A suspect was in custody, authorities said.

Around 4:45 pm (2145 GMT), a 42-year-old man entered the store and used a folding knife to stab 11 people, the Grand Traverse County Sheriff's Office said in a statement on social media.

A sheriff's deputy arrived within minutes and took the man into custody, and people in the store also helped apprehend the suspect and treat victims, the sheriff's office said.

The victims' ages weren't immediately released.

STORYLINE:

Hundreds of weary Palestinians carried sacks of flour on their shoulders after they managed to fetch them from a truck envoy that entered Gaza on Saturday through the Zikim crossing with Israel.

While some of them managed to get bags of flour, others returned empty-handed, and some died on the attempt.

Eyewitnesses say that the crowds were hit by trucks, and Israeli troops opened fire toward them as Palestinians rushed toward the aid convoy, hoping to bring flour for their families.

A group of men carried the body of a dead man, and said that he was hit by a truck.

Fayez Abu Riyala from the al-Shati refugee camp along Gaza City’s shoreline, walked near a military tank to fetch some flour, and he marched through gunfire to bring some food for his children.

“There were a lot of martyrs and wounded people, and the trucks were hitting people, there is no mercy,” said Abu Riyala. “You are dying just to bring a morsel of food for your children".

Mohamed Hamami says that he was inching toward death but he managed to bring flour to his children.

“We entered for death, near the tanks, and we saw the soldiers, and they shot at us, they shot us with flares and bullets”.

Hamami, also from al-Shati refugee camp, said “All the bags of flour that the young men have blood on them. Listen, we are bringing this for our children, we are enduring it for our children”.

Israel's military said it fired warning shots to distance a crowd “in response to an immediate threat" and it was not aware of any casualties.

STORYLINE:

The stench of decaying bodies hangs heavy in the streets of the provincial capital in Syria's southern province of Sweida, where fighting recently erupted.

Once bustling roads now lie eerily silent, with only a few people passing by. In some areas, the destruction is overwhelming, with buildings and cars charred black.

The devastation came after violent clashes broke out two weeks ago, sparked by tit-for-tat kidnappings between armed Bedouin clans and fighters from the Druze religious minority.

The fighting killed hundreds of people and threatened to unravel Syria’s fragile postwar transition.

Syrian government forces intervened, ostensibly to end the fighting, but effectively sided with the clans.

Some government fighters reportedly robbed and executed Druze civilians.

Associated Press journalists from outside the city were able to enter Sweida on Friday for the first time since the violence started on July 13.

With a ceasefire largely holding, residents of Sweida are trying to pick up the pieces of their lives.

Disturbing videos and reports from Sweida surfaced showing Druze civilians being humiliated and executed during the conflict, sometimes accompanied by sectarian slurs.

After a ceasefire took hold, some Druze groups launched revenge attacks on Bedouin communities.

The U.N. has said more than 130,000 people were displaced by the violence.

Government officials, including interim President Ahmad al-Sharaa, have promised to hold accountable those who targeted civilians, but many residents of Sweida remain angry and suspicious.
