STORYLINE:

US President Donald Trump returned to his golf course in Turnberry, Scotland on Sunday, for a round before discussing trade with European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen.

Both sides are seeking an agreement on tariff rates now as the White House’s deadline to impose stiff import taxes looms this week.

Trump continued his golfing weekend at his course on the southwest coast of Scotland with a group that included sons Eric and Donald Jr. and their partners.

Trump's five-day visit to Scotland is built around golf and promoting properties bearing his name.

On Tuesday, Trump will be in Aberdeen, in northeastern Scotland, where his family has another golf course and is opening a third next month.

The president and his sons plan to help cut the ribbon on the new course.

Trump for months has threatened most of the world with steep tariffs in hopes of shrinking large US trade deficits with many key trading partners.

The EU has been no exception.

Trump has said “we have a 50-50 chance, maybe less than that, but a 50-50 chance of making a deal with the EU.”

He also suggested that any deal would have to “buy down” the currently scheduled tariff rate of 30% on the bloc of 27 member states.

Scheduled to join von der Leyen were Maros Sefcovic, the EU’s chief trade negotiator; Björn Seibert, the head of von der Leyen's Cabinet; Sabine Weyand, the commission's directorate-general for trade, and Tomas Baert, head of the trade and agriculture at the EU's delegation to the US.

They planned a news conference after the talks.

The United Nations' food agency welcomed the steps to ease aid restrictions, but said a broader ceasefire was needed to ensure goods reached everyone in need in Gaza. UNICEF called it “an opportunity to save lives.”

The military said it would begin a daily “tactical pause” in Gaza City, Deir al-Balah and Muwasi, three areas of the territory with large populations, to “increase the scale of humanitarian aid” entering the territory.

The pause was running from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. local time and was to be repeated each day until further notice.

A house in Thailand's Prasat district was struck by hostile fire earlier Sunday, around 20 kilometers (12.5mi) from the Cambodian border, where fighting between the two countries continues.

On a narrow village road and under rainy skies, the remnants of what was once a house like any other in the village lay strewn, with only a broken skeleton of steel framing still standing.

Along the ground, distorted corrugated sheets were scattered in the mud, among items such as white bowls for serving good, a lone wellington boot, chairs, and a motorbike.

Tawan Sompong, whose home is on the opposite side of the house that was destroyed by the strike, said bombardments have landed in her area every day since the conflict started, including one that hit her rice field nearby. She heard explosion sounds from early hours of Sunday. Then at around 6am, she heard a loud bang in the sky before hearing something exploded on the ground.

"I saw smoke billowing up, so my husband rode a motorbike from home to check it out," she said. "I was very scared."

Just a few hundred meters nearby, a strike also felled a tree, damaged a small shack and made a giant hole in the ground at the home of a farmer Banlang Labloeyluen. He was sipping coffee in his kitchen at the back, around 20 meters away, when he heard several explosion sounds approaching him. He said he immediately jumped inside and ducked.

"I was startled, and worried that my cover won't be safe enough for the explosion," he said. "I didn't know where to hide."

Thai and Cambodian leaders will meet in Malaysia for talks to end hostilities, a spokesperson for the Thai prime minister’s office said on Sunday.
