Revolutionary leader Raúl Castro, 94, accompanied by Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel, arrived at Ciego de Avila's Plaza Saturday to kick off the 72nd anniversary celebrations of the Moncada Barracks assault with thousands of people.

The anniversary coincides with a period of economic stress, one of the worst in decades, marked by food shortages, power outages, dollarization, and high inflation, which are fueling a wave of emigration.

Last week, Cuba reported a 25% decline in tourism for the first half of the year and acknowledged that the island's gross domestic product fell by 1% in 2024, resulting in an accumulated decline of 11% over the past five years.

"We are here to tell the world that the Cuban revolution continues to fight," the Cuban Prime Minister, Manuel Marrero, stated during the celebration.

While a young university professor said, "There is strength in unity," during the celebration of the old revolutionary fighters with the new generation of Cubans.

Castro, dressed in his usual olive green, is one of the few remaining revolutionaries who attacked the barracks in 1953.

Despite the failure of the attack and the arrest of the revolutionaries, the Moncada attack is regarded as the beginning of the Cuban Revolution.

Apart from Castro, three other participants of the attack were also present at Friday's ceremony: Ramiro Valdés and José Ramón Machado Ventura, both over 90 years old.

The 26th of July is a significant date in the island's history. On this day, Fidel and Raúl Castro, along with a group of young people, attempted to overthrow the government of Fulgencio Batista, but the attempt was unsuccessful.

In 1959, the rebels came into power and began to clash with the United States.

As a result, the US imposed sanctions on Cuba, pressuring for a change in the political system.

Tens of thousands of people danced to techno beats across Berlin on Saturday to celebrate the city's Pride parade, one of the largest LGBTQ+ celebrations in Europe.

With rainbow flags and bottles of beer, Germany's capital city partied under overcast skies, an upgrade after days of downpours, to observe and honor Christopher Street Day.

"It's definitely very important to be here," said partygoer Steffen. "We can be here however we want."

The annual Christopher Street Day parade commemorates the 1969 Stonewall rebellion in New York, a spontaneous street uprising triggered by a police raid on the Stonewall Inn gay bar on Christopher Street in Greenwich Village.

Berlin's parade took revelers past the iconic Brandenburg Gate and through the Nollendorfplatz neighborhood, home to the city's gay culture as well as a memorial to the queer people who were persecuted and killed in Nazi Germany.

The city's first Christopher Street Day occurred on June 30, 1979, in West Berlin.

Fighting along the Thai-Cambodia border has forced thousands of villagers, on both sides, to flee their homes, but not everyone is going.

In the Cambodian town of Samraong, some 40 km from the frontier, Tho Thoross is staying behind – one of a handful of Buddhist monks there who are remaining at their posts to provide refuge and food for anyone in need.

He’s chief monk at the largest and oldest pagoda in the town. He said he’s sent more than a dozen novice monks away to safety, since the two opposing militaries began exchanging fire.

At least 33 people have been killed and more than 168,000 displaced in the ongoing conflict.

“My intention is not to leave for anywhere, but to stay here in this monastery,” he said.

Before the fighting, the temple was a focal point of the town. On Saturday, everything was silent as Tho Thoross entered to light candles and prepare to pray. He says he hopes the guns will soon fall silent.

“As a Buddhist monk living in a province bordering Thailand, I would like to call on both sides to work together to find a solution that is a win-win solution for all,” he said.

Also helping her community cope with the sudden stress of danger and hurried evacuation is 28 year-old Chhar Sin. On Saturday she helped staff a donation point, in Srey Snam district, Siem Reap province, where ordinary people have been handing over everyday items to go to those in need.

“We will provide them with food because they have nothing, and some of them come with only a few clothes and a hat,” she said.

The fighting began on Thursday after months of building tension. International pressure is growing on both sides to try to find a solution.

U.S. President Donald Trump played golf Saturday at his course on Scotland's coast while protesters around the country took to the streets to decry his visit.

Trump and his son Eric played with the U.S. ambassador to Britain, Warren Stephens, near Turnberry, a historic course that the Trump family's company took over in 2008. Hundreds of protesters gathered on the cobblestone and tree-lined street in front of the U.S. Consulate about 100 miles (160 kilometers) away in Edinburgh, Scotland's capital.

Speakers on a makeshift stage told the crowd that Trump was not welcome and they criticized British Prime Minister Keir Starmer for striking a recent trade deal to avoid stiff U.S. tariffs on goods imported from the U.K.

Protests were planned in other cities as environmental activists, opponents of Israel's war with Hamas in Gaza and pro-Ukraine groups loosely formed a “Stop Trump Coalition."

Saturday's protests were not nearly as large as the throngs that came out across Scotland when Trump played at the resort during his first term in 2018.

While in Scotland, Trump is set to talk trade with Starmer and Ursula von der Leyen, the European Commission president. But golf is a major focus.

The Trumps will also visit another Trump course, in the Aberdeen area in northeastern Scotland. They plan to cut a ribbon on Tuesday, opening the second Trump course.

A bus traveling from Lima to Peru’s Amazon region overturned on a highway in the Andes Mountains, leaving at least 18 people dead and 48 injured, authorities said Friday.

The double-decker bus belonging to the company “Expreso Molina Líder Internacional” went off the road and fell down a slope in the district of Palca, Junin region, Junin’s health director Clifor Curipaco told reporters. Authorities are still investigating the cause of the accident.

It was not the first fatal bus accident in 2025, another bus fell into a river on Jan. 3, leaving six people dead and 32 injured.

A study by the Attorney General’s Office found that driver recklessness and excessive speed are the main causes of accidents in Peru.

Road transportation is poorly monitored by authorities in Peru, and emergency assistance is so slow and disorganized.

In 2024, there were approximately 3,173 deaths as a result of traffic accidents in the South American country, according to official data from the Death Information System.
