STORYLINE:

At least 25 people were killed by Israeli airstrikes and gunshots in the Gaza Strip overnight into Saturday, according to the Palestinian territory's health officials and the ambulance service.

The majority of victims were killed by gunfire as they waited for aid trucks close to the Zikim crossing with Israel, said staff at Shifa hospital, where the bodies were brought.

Distraught relatives gathered at the hospital morgue on Saturday to try to identify the remains and to mourn loved ones.

Sherif Abu Aisha, a displaced Palestinian from northern Gaza, said he had been among the crowd that headed to the Zikim crossing on Friday night to await the arrival of trucks carrying much-needed aid supplies.

He said that at one point, people started to run towards a light they thought came from aid trucks, only to find it was coming from Israeli troops deployed there.

He claimed that after people passed Israeli tanks, "they started shooting at all the people," killing a number of people, including his uncle, a father of eight.

Israel's army didn’t respond to request for comments about the latest shootings.

The Zikim crossing shootings came days after at least 79 Palestinians were killed trying to reach aid entering through the same crossing.

Israel's military said at the time its soldiers shot at a gathering of thousands of Palestinians who posed a threat, and that it was aware of some casualties.

Among the people being mourned on Saturday were also four people killed in an Israeli strike on an apartment building in Gaza City, hospital staff and the ambulance service said.

The latest violence came as ceasefire talks between Israel and Hamas hit a standstill after the U.S and Israel recalled their negotiating teams on Thursday, throwing the future of the talks into further uncertainty.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Friday his government was considering “alternative options” to talks with Hamas, while a spokesperson for the militants said negotiations were expected to resume next week.

The Hamas official went on to portray the recall of the Israeli and American delegations as a pressure tactic.

STORYLINE:

U.S. President Donald Trump played golf Saturday at his course on Scotland's coast while protesters around the country took to the streets to decry his visit.

Trump and his son Eric played with the U.S. ambassador to Britain, Warren Stephens, near Turnberry, a historic course that the Trump family's company took over in 2008.

Hundreds of protesters gathered on the cobblestone and tree-lined street in front of the U.S. Consulate about 100 miles (160 kilometers) away in Edinburgh, Scotland's capital.

Speakers on a makeshift stage told the crowd that Trump was not welcome and they criticized British Prime Minister Keir Starmer for striking a recent trade deal to avoid stiff U.S. tariffs on goods imported from the U.K.

Protests were planned in other cities as environmental activists, opponents of Israel's war with Hamas in Gaza and pro-Ukraine groups loosely formed a “Stop Trump Coalition."

Trump's late mother, Mary Anne MacLeod, was born on the Isle of Lewis in Scotland and the president has suggested he feels at home in the country. But the protesters did their best to change that.

In the view of Mark Gorman, 63, of Edinburgh, “the vast majority of Scots have this sort of feeling about Trump that, even though he has Scottish roots, he’s a disgrace.”

Saturday's protests were not nearly as large as the throngs that came out across Scotland when Trump played at the resort during his first term in 2018.

While in Scotland, Trump is set to talk trade with Starmer and Ursula von der Leyen, the European Commission president. But golf is a major focus.

The Trumps will also visit another Trump course, in the Aberdeen area in northeastern Scotland. They plan to cut a ribbon on Tuesday, opening the second Trump course.

Hundreds of displaced Cambodians at the Battkhao Resettlement Camp in Oddar Meanchey Province crowded around a supply truck of water, on Saturday, as temperatures soared in the camp.

Oddar Meanchey, one of the Cambodian provinces sharing the country’s roughly 800-kilometer border with Thailand, has witnessed a lot of the fighting in the ongoing Thailand-Cambodia clash that has displaced thousands of people and killed dozens.

The makeshift resettlement camp continues to grow as the conflict pushes more Cambodians to flee south.

“I want to see the two countries find peace and live peacefully together because I do not want to see such fighting like this continue to happen,” said 46-year-old Pheap La, who fled the border town of O’Smach with her grandchildren and is now at the resettlement camp.

Thailand and Cambodia traded accusations Saturday of fresh attacks as deadly border clashes entered a third day, leaving at least 33 people dead and more than 168,000 displaced, as international pressure mounted on both sides to reach a ceasefire.

Thousands of desperate Palestinians made their way to the Zikim crossing in the Gaza Strip, risking their lives in a frantic search for food.

Hospital officials reported that a number of Palestinians were killed in recent weeks in the area near the crossing, in the north of the Palestinian territory.

Often when aid is delivered, large crowds of desperate people, as well as criminal gangs, overwhelm trucks as they enter and strip off the supplies.

Israel’s military said soldiers this week shot at a gathering of thousands of Palestinians in northern Gaza who posed a threat, and it was aware of some casualties.

Displaced mother Smoud Wahdan, cradling her infant son, made the journey to the crossing from a school in Gaza City where they are sheltering.

She acknowledged the journey carried a lot of risk, but said that she had to face this danger in order to feed her children.

Thai monks from a temple close to the border with Cambodia, where deadly clashes have erupted say they are refusing to evacuate the area.

The temple in Surin province is about 10 kilometers away from the border where clashes have killed at least 33 people and displaced more than 168,000.

The six monks are sheltering in the largely deserted area in a makeshift bunker made from concrete tubes.

About a meter wide and four meters deep, it is divided into two rooms and equipped with electricity, sockets, lights and electric fans.

STORYLINE:

Taiwanese voters rejected a bid to oust about one-fifth of their lawmakers, all from the opposition Nationalist Party, in a recall election Saturday.

The vote dampened hopes for the ruling party to flip the balance of power in the self-ruled island’s legislature.

The independence-leaning ruling Democratic Progressive Party won last year’s presidential election, but the China-friendly Nationalists, also known as the KMT, and the smaller Taiwan People’s Party have enough seats to form a majority bloc.

While vote counting was still underway, preliminary results showed that the recall efforts failed to remove any of the two dozen KMT lawmakers.

The scale of the recall elections is unprecedented, with another seven KMT lawmakers facing a similar vote on Aug. 23.

The KMT currently holds 52 seats, while the ruling DPP holds 51 seats.

For the DPP to secure a legislative majority, at least six KMT lawmakers would need to be ousted, and the ruling party would need to win the by-elections, which must be held within three months of the announcement of results.

For the recall to pass, more than a quarter of eligible voters in the electoral district must vote in favor of it, and the total number of supporters must exceed those voting against.

The poll closed at 4 p.m. local time. Taiwan’s Central Election Commission will announce the official results on Aug. 1.

If next month’s poll results are also unfavorable to the DPP, it would mean that the government of Taiwan President Lai Ching-te could continue to face strong resistance from within the legis... [truncated]
