A couple’s road trip turned into a nightmare after they were caught in a wildfire along Interstate 84 in Idaho.
Saylor Marie Gonzalez was traveling with her partner from Boise to Denver on July 19 when flames closed in on the highway. The pair had been waved through by a state patrol officer, but moments later, smoke thickened and the fire neared the road.
According to Ada County Emergency Management, the I-84 Fire was burning about eight miles southeast of Boise, prompting evacuations and forcing eastbound traffic to reroute.
Footage filmed by Gonzalez from the passenger seat captures the chaos that followed. “Cars panicked, some crashed, others drove through the median. We followed to escape. It was chaotic,” she said. At one point in the video, Gonzalez is heard saying: “This is so scary,” as they drive directly toward the flames before veering across the grassy divider.
“Very blessed to be safe and sound. Love and light to all involved,” Gonzalez told Storyful.
The Bureau of Land Management Idaho Fire said the fire scorched over 8,000 acres before being fully contained on July 21.
