Russell Brand was swarmed by photographers as he arrived at Westminster Magistrates’ Court to face rape and sexual assault charges.

The 49-year-old was charged by post last month with one count each of rape, indecent assault and oral rape, as well as two counts of sexual assault, relating to four separate women.

The charges came following a joint investigation by The Sunday Times, The Times and Channel 4 Dispatches in September 2023 in which several women accused him of rape, sexual assaults and emotional abuse.

Nigel Farage declares victory in Runcorn, telling reporters now is a "very important moment" for Reform UK. He said the growth in Reform support is happening "right across the UK", accusing Sir Keir Starmer of having "alienated so much of his voting base".

Speaking alongside Reform candidate Sarah Pochin, he said the constituency - which has been held by Labour for more than 40 years - is the equivalent of Diane Abbott's Labour held seat in Hackney.

Donald Trump addressed the major White House shake up that resulted in Mike Waltz being ousted as national security adviser.

During remarks for a National Day of Prayer event, the president shouted out Marco Rubio, who will act as interim NSA while Waltz will go on to serve as UN ambassador.

Trump thanked the secretary of state in his speech, saying, "When I have a problem, I call up Marco, he gets it solved."

Anti-racism protesters have gathered outside the Runcorn and Helsby by-election count hall, warning that Nigel Farage is not welcome in Runcorn.

“Nigel Farage we know you, you’re a racist through and through”, the group of around 20 activists from Stand Up To Racism chanted.

Holding up signs saying, “refugees welcome”, the group argued that Reform UK does not represent the values of Runcorn.

Politicians and councillors from Labour, the Tories and Reform UK are anxiously awaiting results as counting begins in local elections and a by-election – the first major test of opinion for Sir Keir Starmer’s government.

In a highly fragmented party system, the votes will show whether Nigel Farage and Reform UK have maintained their high poll ratings since last summer.

The Tories, defending 954 seats, are bracing themselves for heavy losses.

Tory grandees have warned their party against doing deals with Reform UK.

Labour has been particularly keen to win the by-election in Runcorn and Helsby in Cheshire, called when former Labour MP Mike Amesbury was convicted of assault.
