Travel operator easyJet has issued a three-day travel warning for Spain and Portugal following a major power blackout.

Around 500 flights were cancelled in total due to the blackout, according to an estimate by The Independent’s travel correspondent Simon Calder, following the blackout on Monday (28 April).

Despite power being returned around Spain and Portugal on Tuesday morning, travel chaos continued into its second day.

Simon explained: “If you are flying with easyJet, they have said you have got three days, you can fly back on any of those days, just rearrange your flight and there will be no charge.

“Other airlines are similar, but if you are on a package holiday with TUI or Jet2, it is their problem to get you home and not yours.”

One person was killed and several others were injured after a boat plowed into a ferry near Clearwater’s Memorial Causeway Bridge in Florida on Sunday night.

There were 45 people on board the ferry when the crash occurred in Clearwater around 8.30 p.m. local time.

The boat fled the scene, but authorities from a partnering law enforcement agency have since tracked it down, the Tampa Bay Times reports. The driver is yet to be named by local authorities.

Benidorm’s usually bustling streets were deserted as a power outage affected Spain and Portugal on Monday, 28 April.

Footage showed a quiet Calle Lepanto after cities across the Iberian Peninsula were plunged into darkness in one of Europe's most severe blackouts.

Power has now started returning to the two countries. Investigators are looking into the cause of the blackout, which remains unclear, but authorities denied foul play and rumours of a cyber attack.

Portuguese grid operator REN said there was a “very large oscillation in the electrical voltages, first in the Spanish system, which then spread to the Portuguese system”.

Donald Trump has repeatedly teased the idea of a third term, often asking crowds if he should run again.

During a White House press conference in January 2025, supporters responded with chants of “Four more years.”

Speaking to The Atlantic in an interview published Monday (28 April), the US president acknowledged that running again in 2028 would be challenging, but refused to rule it out, despite it going against the constitution.
