Canada’s prime minister, Mark Carney, has said families are “living every family's nightmare” after a car ploughed into a street festival in Vancouver on Saturday evening (26 April).

Nine people were killed, and an unknown number of others injured, in the mass-casualty incident at an event organised by the local Filipino community.

“Last night, families lost a sister, a brother, a mother, a father, a son, or a daughter,” Carney said in a statement on Sunday (27 April).

“Those families are living every family's nightmare,” he added.

While Canadian authorities have said they are “confident” the incident was “not an act of terrorism,” Carney noted that they are “monitoring the situation closely.”

Nine people have died after a car ploughed into a crowd at a street festival in Vancouver on Saturday evening.

Canadian police said pedestrians at a Lapu-Lapu Day festival were struck down at around 8pm, with an unknown number also injured.

A 30-year-old man from Vancouver was arrested at the scene, but police said they are “confident” that the incident “was not an act of terrorism”.

The crash was being treated as a "mass casualty incident", the police said.

Canada’s prime minister Mark Carney said he was “devastated to hear about the horrific events” the festival, which is a celebration of a Filipino national hero.

“I offer my deepest condolences to the loved ones of those killed and injured, to the Filipino Canadian community, and to everyone in Vancouver,” Mr Carney wrote on social media.

“We are all mourning with you. We are monitoring the situation closely, and thankful to our first responders for their swift action.”

The incident happened at around 10.35am on Sunday (27 April), as the men's elite runners approached the bridge.

The demonstrators, linked to the Youth Demand group, entered the race route after jumping the barriers.

They wore t-shirts bearing the slogan "Youth Demand: Stop Arming Israel." Police officers quickly intervened and arrested the two individuals.

Vladimir Putin congratulated his military after Russia claimed all Ukrainian troops have left the Kursk region with the help of North Korean soldiers.

Valery Gerasimov, Chief of the General Staff for Russia’s Armed Forces, told Putin that all Ukrainian troops have been forced from part of Russia’s Kursk region, in a Kremlin meeting on Saturday (27 April).

Putin responded: “I congratulate all personnel of all military units that took part in the defeat of neo-Nazi formations that invaded Russian territory in the Kursk region. The Kyiv regime's adventure has completely failed.”

Multiple people have been killed after a car ploughed into a crowd at a street festival in Vancouver on Saturday evening.

Canadian police said a number of pedestrians at the Lapu Lapu festival were struck down at around 8pm.

The driver has not been named but has been taken into custody.

“Multiple others" were injured in the incident, but Vancouver Police did not confirm an exact toll. It is not yet known whether the incident is believed to be deliberate.
