For someone such as myself, a person always fascinated with space, whom, as a little boy, stared up at the stars, speaking with Professor David Block, Professor Emeritus, of Mathematics and Applied Sciences at the University of Witwaterstrand, was an honour indescribable in words.
In this short chat, we spoke about the historic events we all witnessed over the past weekend, and even managed to chat about the past (Apollo, Space Shuttle), and also looked to the future a bit. SpaceX and Elon Musk brought America to space, from American soil, for the first time in 9 years since the Space Shuttle programme ended in 2011, and South Africans should be proud that the effort was spearheaded by SpaceX, an American company founded by a South African, Mr. Elon Musk. It is also worth noting, this is the first time in history, a commercially-operated spacecraft has carried humans into space. The technological advancement of the SpaceX Dragon Crew capsule is such, it will be used for many years to come, and has the capability to carry us beyond low-earth orbit, hopefully soon to the moon, and Mars!
