Meet Our Panelist

Rob Chrisman

Rob’s best known for his free morning commentary on the mortgage business and the economy that some of you may read. He began his career in capital markets 35 years ago in 1985 and his background includes hedging pipelines, running a small subprime company, helping companies with various issues on a consulting basis, and serving on the boards of directors of several financial services companies. 

Ken Torre

EVP, Capital Markets for First Guaranty Mortgage Corporation, with primary responsibility for revenue generation and optimization. Ken currently oversees Secondary Marketing, Margin Management, Capital Markets Analytics, Bulk Trading, & Asset Acquisition and Sales. First Guaranty originated approximately $5 – 6 billion in Agency and GNMA loans. Ken’s career has spanned over 20 years in the mortgage industry working for large companies such as Capital One Bank and Bank of America. Ken, also a Certified Public Accountant, also worked for PwC, in their Advisory group, consulting to the top 20 banks and mortgage lenders in the US.

 Alan Qureshi

As a Managing Partner, Al brings over 20 years of experience in the mortgage and capital markets to Blue Water’s senior management team. Al is responsible for overseeing product development, day to day operations and informing strategic thought.  Immediately prior to joining Blue Water, Alan “Al” Qureshi was the President of Incenter Portfolio Advisors. At Incenter, Al developed various MSR related hedge strategies and valuation models as well as an MSR execution Platform called MSR-X. Al brings all of these developments with him to Blue Water and is excited to continue to build upon these strategies in a dynamic, sophisticated and client-focused environment. Prior to joining Incenter, Al served as Head of Mortgage Servicing Hedging and Hedging Analytics at U.S. Bank. Al has also held MSR, analytic, hedging and trading appointments for JP Morgan, Merrill Lynch, and Diamondback Capital.

Matt Maurer

Senior Director for MountainView Financial Solutions, a SitusAMC company

Matt Maurer is responsible for providing residential mortgage servicing rights and whole loan sales advice, portfolio valuation, finance facility consulting, and risk management services. Mr. Maurer, prior to moving over to his current role in 2010, was a MSR valuation analyst at MountainView. Before joining MountainView in 2008, Matt worked at Clayton Fixed Income Services and Matrix Asset Management. He graduated from the University of Colorado Boulder with a Bachelor’s degree in Finance and a minor in Economics.

Chris Voss is prominently known for taking his field-tested skills as the FBI’s former lead international kidnapping negotiator and putting them in his book Never Split The Difference. 

Jon talks to Chris about how to find out if you’re the favorite or the fool, how to bond with the person you’re negotiating with, why Orpah is one of the best negotiators of all time and much more.

Chris Voss Bio

Prior to 2008, Chris was the lead international kidnapping negotiator for the Federal Bureau of Investigation, as well as the FBI’s hostage negotiation representative for the National Security Council’s Hostage Working Group. During his government career, he also represented the U.S. Government at two (2) international conferences sponsored by the G-8 as an expert in kidnapping. Prior to becoming the FBI lead international kidnapping negotiator, Christopher served as the lead Crisis Negotiator for the New York City Division of the FBI. Christopher was a member of the New York City Joint Terrorist Task Force for 14 years.  He was the case agent on such cases as TERRSTOP (the Blind Sheikh Case – Sheikh Omar Abdel-Rahman), the TWA Flight 800 catastrophe and negotiated the surrender of the first hostage taker to give up in the Chase Manhattan bank robbery hostage-taking.

During Chris’s 24 year tenure in the Bureau, he was trained in the art of negotiation by not only the FBI but Scotland Yard and Harvard Law School. He is also a recipient of the Attorney General’s Award for Excellence in Law Enforcement and the FBI Agents Association Award for Distinguished and Exemplary Service.

Chris has taught business negotiation in the MBA program as an adjunct professor at the University of Southern California’s Marshall School of Business and at Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business.  He has taught business negotiation at Harvard University, guest lectured at The Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.

Guest Biography

Isaac R. Betancourt joined the Black Swan Group, where he works as a success coach and a trainer, in January 2019. With a heart for serving others, Isaac is driven by getting to know clients and building relationships with them.

Isaac grew up in Puerto Rico and graduated from Interamerican University of Puerto Rico, earning a bachelor’s degree in Spanish and literature. One day, after driving around the entire island of Puerto Rico in seven-and-a-half hours, Isaac decided he wanted to see more of the world and enlisted in the military. He joined the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne Division and is a veteran of the Gulf War.

After four years of military service, Isaac became a police officer in Arlington County, Virginia, where he worked for nearly 23 years. There, he served as a hostage negotiator and was also one of the first responders to assist during the Pentagon attack on 9/11.

In 2006, Isaac took a position as a crisis negotiation instructor at the Northern Virginia Criminal Justice Training Academy. During his time there, Isaac trained over 800 first responders and dispatchers, including officers from the Pentagon, the CIA, and the FBI. Although not an FBI agent himself, Isaac was given the special honor of attending the FBI School of Hostage Negotiation. Isaac has demonstrated himself to be an experienced trainer who is always striving to learn more.

In his spare time, Isaac enjoys playing all kinds of music on the trumpet and having interesting dinner conversations with his wife, who’s a psychology teacher.

Derek also teaches how to be a great leader with these negotiation skills in his new book  Ego, Authority, Failure.

Derek Gaunt is a lecturer, author of Ego, Authority, Failure, and trainer with 29 years of law enforcement experience, 20 of which as a team member, leader and then commander of hostage negotiations teams in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. He is a hostage negotiation and incident command subject matter expert who frequently speaks at hostage negotiations and SWAT conferences across the country. Derek’s passion for interpersonal communications began when he was selected as a detective in the Criminal Investigations Section of a municipal police agency. He spent the majority of his law enforcement career in the Criminal Investigations Section as a detective, supervisor and eventually commander of major crimes. In 1997, he took his passion for interpersonal communications to the next level, becoming a hostage negotiator. Once he became a supervisor, his passion transitioned from “doing” to teaching the concepts to others. As a member of the Black Swan Group, he is a negotiation trainer and personal coach. Derek has trained throughout the US and around the world, instructing business organizations on how to apply hostage negotiation practices and principles to their world. Derek presents seminars and in-house training programs in a variety of environments. His presentations are engaging and filled with useful techniques for understanding human behavior and navigating difficult conversations. His training has helped leaders and their organizations increase their performance by changing the way they think about communicating one person to another.
