Part 2: The California Blitz & UFC 2 Part 2 is about competition. Grand Master Ray Wizard breaks down the California Blitz, a front-hand backknuckle into reverse punches, using a crossover or step-drag to catch opponents off guard.

He looks back on becoming the 1993 Overall Men's Point Fighting World Champion at the NBL Super Grands in New Orleans, and on his rivalry with six-time world champion Damon Gilbert, who named him his toughest opponent.

He beat Gilbert in the 1995 heavyweight division, the same year he appeared on the cover of Sport Karate (Nov 1995). We also revisit UFC 2: No Way Out (March 1994), where he stepped into early cross-style competition and became part of martial arts history.

Part 1:

The Black Karate Federation Grand Master Ray Wizard, newly appointed President of the Black Karate Federation (BKF), joins The Mind Sensei Podcast for the first of three parts.

We go back to the roots: the BKF's formation in 1969 to support Black karate schools that faced unfair treatment at tournaments, the meaning behind the BKF crest

(designed by Jerry Smith, completed 1970), and his training under Sijo Steve Sanders, later Steve Muhammad, in a lineage that traces back to Ed Parker.

What happens when a martial artist stops looking at individual styles and starts looking for the principles that connect them?

In Part 2 of my conversation with Mr. Alan McLuckie, we continue exploring a martial journey spanning more than five decades.

We move deeper into Mr. McLuckie’s approach to stick and blade combat, body mechanics, adaptability and practical application.

We also explore his later journey into Systema. After decades of martial arts experience, Mr. McLuckie encountered Vladimir Vasiliev in 1998 and was certified to teach Systema in 1999.

It is a fascinating discussion about remaining a student, challenging established ideas and allowing your martial arts to continue evolving regardless of how many years you have trained.

From Serrada Eskrima to Systema, the common thread is not the name of the style. It is movement, efficiency, adaptability and understanding.

Mr. McLuckie attained the level of Advanced Instructor in Serrada Eskrima under Grandmaster Angel Cabales and spent nine years as Head Eskrima Instructor at the renowned Degerberg Academy.

In the concluding episode of our three-part conversation, Mr. J.R. Diaz reflects on a martial arts journey spanning more than four decades.

From beginning American Kenpo in 1979, earning his Black Belt and opening his first school in 1988, through his advanced study with Senior Master Richard “Huk” Planas, Mr. Diaz has devoted much of his life to teaching and passing Kenpo to future generations.

Part 3 explores the responsibility that comes with senior rank, the evolution of American Kenpo, preserving knowledge without allowing it to become stagnant, and what decades on the mat can teach us about being both a martial artist and an instructor.
