Rebecca's career in education started on the ocean, sailing around the world on a traditionally rigged tall ship. Through this two-year global circumnavigation Rebecca trained for a US Coast Guard captain's license and went on to work in non-profit outdoor education, teaching kids to sail on the Charles River in Boston and later on the Puget Sound of Washington State.
Rebecca Wellington is an adoptee and author of the book Who Is a Worthy Mother, An Intimate History of Adoption.
She was driven to write a history of adoption in the United States from the perspective of an adoptee, and to honor the memory of her older sister and truth of brave women everywhere.
Rebecca has taught high school social studies, as well as undergraduate courses and graduate level courses in education history, curriculum and instruction. Her
higher-education teaching adventures have taken her to universities across Western Washington, including University of Washington, and Seattle University.She currently teaches in the School of Education at the University of Puget Sound.She holds a doctorate in Education History from the University of Washington, where she taught in the undergraduate program of the College of Education.
Rebecca's scholarly articles have been published in the History of Education Quarterly, the American Indian Quarterly and the Pacific Northwest Quarterly.

Ashley is an adoptee, birth mother, and an adoptive parent.
After going through foster care and being adopted by a Baptist family at the age of 4, she saw a lot of trauma in many forms. She was surrounded by adoptees and always knew adoption was special, so when she found out she was pregnant, she knew that adoption was the only answer.While there was plenty of drama that 9 months, she was able to choose a great family and was comfortable with her decision. She says that most of her memories have faded with time due to mental trauma. Ashley went through postpartum depression and the darkest moments of her life and lost herself for a few years.
Then, 11 years after she gave her child up for adoption, she was offered the opportunity to adopt her child back. Ashley adopted her son back on June 21, 2024. The most beautiful day in her family’s history book.

Stephen was born to a single mother at The Willows Maternity Sanitarium in Kansas City, Missouri in 1949. Kansas City was the hub of adoption in America for over four decades, and some 30,000 babies were born here over those decades. Stephen was later adopted by his parents six months later in Iowa.
He always knew of his adoption but at age 13, he told my mother he wanted to know more. She reacted with hostility, and from that moment Stephen vowed he would find his birth mother and the facts of his adoption, no matter what. After 30 years of detective work, He found her, recently released from a half-way house on the East Coast.
At age 44, Stephen and his wife and I adopted their then
four year old son. Having given up his search for his birthfather, Stephen was contacted by a “first cousin" two years ago through 23 and Me, who said he was quite sure that his mother was my half-sister. In turn, he discovered the name and family history of his birth father and found he has four half sisters, all of whom are close to him in age.Subsequently, he began writing his memoir and finished a first draft five months later. Stephen likes to say that adoption has not defined his life, but it did frame it. "

Brad is a Gen-X adoptee from the baby scoop era who grew up in New Jersey in the '70s and '80s. His adopters were wealthy, and his experience as a young child was great. However, he went on to experience many negative life events as a result of unresolved maternal separation trauma, and it wasn’t until 10 years ago that he connected the dots and started coming out of the fog.
He started advocating for adoptee voices on Twitter during the pandemic and switched to TikTok in late 2023, where he educates about adoption abolition, advocates for safe external care for children in need, and cautions influencers about the dangers of child exploitation on social media, especially when their children have already experienced maternal separation trauma.

Ken DeStefano is an attorney living in New York, who is also a domestic adoptee that was born in the late 1960s. He was raised in a caring and loving home. As an adoptee, he has had a largely happy life, but always wondered about the unknown.
That curiosity led to a search for his own birth mother and a reunification with her. His debut novel, I Will See You Again...Hearts Will Sing, tells the story of two people whose past, present, and future lives are inexplicably linked.
In 2024, DeStefano was selected by the Tucson Festival of Books for recognition as an “Indie Author,” and his book was also selected as a finalist in the 2024 American Fiction Awards in the Family Saga category.

Liz is a proud member of Actor's Equity, SAG-AFTRA, Affiliate Faculty at the Institute for Research on Women and Gender, and part of the Diversity Scholars Network at the National Center for Institutional Diversity at the University of Michigan.
She has published articles on auto-ethnography and adoptee narratives, has an award-winning one-woman show called Un-M-Othered, and facilitates trauma-informed healing workshops for adoptees and women.
