    Effect on Emotions
This is something I'm working on so much, just the awareness of them, the awareness that it's just an emotion and that it's normal and okay. There's judgment behind it. I can make this into something better than what it is right now.
    Thoughts on Breathing
I will notice immediately if I'm not taking a deep breath like all of us, I just do this like a gasp of air. That is something that I've been much more purposeful about in my day. And it's something that I do before I jump into my day before I do my brain dump list. If I start feeling that overwhelmed feeling during the day, I always start with a few deep breaths, because it's just that perfect moment to reset. What am I doing? Am I being intentional?

    Bullying Story
I think about bullying as I was a Catholic school kid who transferred into a public school and immediately got the identity of the ‘goody two shoes'. I was always smart and I've always loved time management. I love the little planners you'd get when you're in middle school. Because of being a new kid; I was a bit unaware of a lot of the things that public school kids were aware of because I was from a really small Catholic school. That just made me a target immediately right off the bat.
I think looking back, my choice was to lean into that identity versus not fighting against it. But I just made it. I leaned into that identity to just make it easier to soften the blow of what the kids were saying, versus saying like, No, I'm actually much more complex than that. And I'm not going to let myself be put into any kind of box.

    Effect on Emotions
Mindfulness has allowed me to not villainize people, places, things, and ideas that shouldn't be villainized it's allowed me to pinball a thought around my brain and then let it land accurately in a constructive place, not a destructive one.
    Thoughts on Breathing
I have been way more mindful of breathing, to the point where now I have mouth tape that I put over my mouth when I go to sleep because I'm trying to breathe more through my nose. And I occasionally snore, which my wife does not like. And I understand that.
When I'm speaking, I oftentimes don't take breaths for long periods of time. So being more mindful of that is powerful as well.

    Bullying Story
I think I was a freshman in high school, and I got glasses and never had glasses before. The first day I ever had my glasses, I didn't know really even know what that meant. Yeah. And I think that's a situation; when you're that young, there isn't a lot of mindfulness. Honestly, you're kind of thinking of where I fit in in the pecking order of the school. And where's my ego?
I think mindfulness of the understanding that both sides I villainize that person, how dare you make fun of me? Why are you bullying me? When in reality, a more mindful approach that I might take now is to ask, what's going on with you that makes you feel like you need to lash out and try to hurt me?

    Effect on Emotions
I could say, thanks to mindfulness and all those four-month meditation retreats 12 hours a day, I don't have negative emotions anymore. They have helped decrease negative emotions a little bit, but I have turbulent emotions. That's why I started meditating; I could not control the anxiety and the racing mind and then the grief and the pain.
Meditation has helped me relate to the unpleasant emotion with more wisdom in seeing it back to that via surfboard or log,. I'm being tossed around by these turbulent emotions. But can I be a surfboard? Because I don't know how to stand on once will actually be the surfboard and say, ‘this is really painful'.
There's tons of anxiety present or tons of anger or tons of sadness present and it hurts. But this too shall pass. And having developed some meditation skills over the years, I can now meditate in the midst of the anxiety and in a more lovingly detached way, watch the storm.
    Thoughts on Breathing
What helps me is ‘The three breath and hug'. Stand face to face, embrace deeply, breathe in for one slight beat at the top. Breathe out for one at the same time. And repeat twice. My hubby and I try to do it multiple times a day. It is a beautiful way to bring breath and all this esoteric teaching into an immediate way to connect. Let go and begin again.

    Bullying Story
I was a bullied kid. First of all, my parents sent me to the only good school in our neighborhood, which was a Catholic school, and I was the only non-Catholic. So all the other kids told me I was going to hell. And then, because I'm a great little monkey gifted with a very bright mind, after kindergarten, two months into grade one, they booted me up to grade two.
I would sit alone on this swing set, swinging and crying and reading a book and with no friends. What I think, as someone who has been bullied, which is every single person listening, including if they were a perpetrator of bullying as a young person.

    A Most Mindful Creature
When you are in the presence of a dolphin or whale, it is literally impossible to think about anything else. You are in that present moment.
If you're on a boat, and there are dolphins right in front of the boat surfing, righting the bow waves, looking and turning to look up at you, and making eye contact, that is a most mindful experience.
Wisdom From The Sea Oracle Deck.
Anne: I have a brand new Oracle Card Deck called Wisdom From The Sea. I have been trained as a certified Dolphin Energy Healer. It's like any other kind of energetic healing like Reiki. I consciously ask the dolphins and the whales to send their powerful healing energy through me.
I'm somebody who is not sensitive to energy. I can't see it or feel it. Some people can see auras, but not me. What I do get is, in my mind, it's like watching a mind movie that the dolphins and whales send me, a series of images and messages for my client. Oracle card decks are great if you have a challenge, a question, or if you just want some guidance.
    Swimming With Whales
When we swim with whales, we're not swimming, we're floating, and they're swimming around us. There's nothing we can do to keep up with a whale when it wants to swim.
Usually we'll find a mom and a calf and Mom will go down and just rest. But baby has to come up more often for air than mom does. So when baby comes up for air, sometimes it'll come take a look at us and they'll wonder, ‘what are you guys doing here?'
We met a baby and that was amazing. Now we're not allowed to touch the wild whales, right? Well, this little baby did not read that memo and it literally came to every single one of us and touched us and reached out. He literally reached out his pectoral fin to me and it was inches from my face. And I just gently laid my hand on its pectoral fin. And she went inches from a number of my group. Everybody in my group touched this baby whale or the baby whale touch them. It was the most amazing experience.
    Words of Wisdom
“I'm seeing in my mind's eye, this beautiful eye of a whale that's looking directly at you and just beaming you so much love and to let you know that you are loved, you are not alone, and the whales and dolphins are here to support you and guide you. All you have to do is ask”.

    Bullying Story
I wish mindfulness had been taught when I was in school. It would have made an enormous difference because I've lost count of the number of times I would go back home to my room, just feeling absolutely awful about what had happened at school. I felt belittled and I felt so small.
So the way that mindfulness would have had a tremendous impact is by reminding me that I am not the feelings I'm having. I'm not the thoughts that I'm having. The mere fact that these are entities that I am having implies separation between the ‘I', and what is being felt and being experienced. Having that healthy ability to observe rather than identify and react would indeed have allowed me to feel what I needed to feel in a healthier way, as opposed to going for avoidance as my MO.

    Bullying Story
I remember being bullied all through being a kid and I think part of it is because of my curly hair. That was the style then I had freckles I had these ugly glasses; just things that were not helping me be at my best.
I remember kids saying mean things about my brother's name, Jack. So, Jack and Jill; I heard all kinds of versions of the nursery rhyme.
I had a definite incident of inappropriate sexual contact. And that was really upsetting, where I felt like I couldn't even go to school like I'd be looked at.
I had my share of feeling bullied, feeling insecure, feeling threatened. I think in my life, there have been many moments of feeling bullied, feeling insecure, feeling unsafe, feeling taunted, feeling teased, which might be slightly different than being taunted.
The point is, part of children's messiness is a certain meanness. Now, here's my hope and excitement for the future and the present; I believe fully that children now are much more conscious and more mindful.

  • Releasing Dis-ease With Awareness; Ann Hince
Ann Hince is a professional speaker, author & spiritual teacher. Ann can show the way from Inner Turmoil to Inner Peace. Twenty years later, the tears from that trauma were still just under the surface. Ann found a simple technique that helped her release these emotions – but she went further and can now put her awareness inside her body – and has changed the bone structure of her skull and grown ½ an inch at age 55. Ann has found that seeking out our truth, what we truly feel, and accepting those feelings, is the key to inner peace.

    Effect on Emotions
I now notice my emotions and don't get caught in them. Most of us get caught up in our emotions. Now I can stand back and say, okay, okay, look at me; I'm getting frustrated, I'm getting angry, or I can feel that physical aspect of the emotion deep inside. So it's very different than what it used to be.
    Thoughts on Breathing
I wouldn't call them techniques, more tools, breathe breath is definitely part of what happens along this journey. With feeling the feelings, they will hold my breath, while I'm feeling that tension, because I believe it's kind of been stored in that part of the breath where I can feel the tension. And when it releases, there is a huge intake of breath, which I believe is almost like the soul seating a little bit further into the body and becoming a little bit more grounded. And I do use it.
That's another thing I do if I find tension inside and the connective tissue which is too tight; I can't release it with focused attention. Then I will blow through it. They will blow slowly through my mouth, imagining that I'm blowing through that tension in the connective tissue and it will help it release.

The boy that was bullying me, I just hate what he did. I just hate it. I hate it. I hate it. I hate it. I hate it, I would have got that energy out of me so that I became peaceful inside. Because I believe we're a signal.
So if I had held that energy inside of me, that frustration, that annoyance, that disgust with them; that's part of my signal. And I would have attracted again, and again and again. And I did, it went on for two years. And if I had brought myself back to peace each night, then I believe over time, the bullying would have stopped because I would have been a different signal.

    Effect on Emotions
Mindfulness has definitely helped me keep a broad perspective and grace for all kinds of people and all kinds of ways of thinking. Because when you are so wrapped up in yourself, it's hard to live outside of that bubble. But when you can take the time to be mindful, you open yourself up to other points of view.
    Thoughts on Breathing
I have to live every day to breathe. I think, especially with the background I have, the clients that I care for something like breathing, and grounding techniques, something that can be implemented wherever we are. We don't have to have special tools or a tool belt to be able to implement an effective coping strategy and breathing we carry with us everywhere we go.
And so whether it's a stressful situation or a financial decision I'm making in the store, when I need to be present in the moment, I ground myself. Oftentimes, deep breathing techniques are what I go to at that moment to help gain clarity.

I think as the frugality podcast in the personal finance world, we can definitely get picked on because it's much sexier to talk about investing and side hustling and entrepreneurship. And many people dump on frugality, because of its correlation to a scarcity mindset.
I definitely like my life's work and my passion for helping bullied people. But we have to understand that everybody is in their own place and on their own journey. You have to realize that frugality is for everyone, but you have to be in a place for it.

    Effect on Emotions
I have choices every single day that I get to make, in better ways, because I get present. Am I ever triggered? But far less often, and in far less, like harmful, self-harmful, and otherwise harmful ways in the world?
    Thoughts on Breathing
Let's all just take a breath together. What difference does it make in our lives in the world? It can change everything. When I've been in an argument with my partner, one thing that he's done that has been profound is he'll just stop and open his palms toward me and say, I just love you. And it's hard to scream into that void of love and calm and breath.

    Bullying Story
The instance that I remember so vividly of being bullied as a child was riding the bus home, and there was an older boy who just always was alone. And he would like to throw things at those of us who were younger and kind of push us over and tell us to get out of the seat, that that was his seat. And he lived out close to me. So we would drop him off first and then head to my house. And one day, like, I could just see that he was sad.
And I was like,  are you okay? And not, not from a place of being in his face, but just like, I'm concerned about you. Are you okay? And he stopped. And he never bullied anybody on that bus. Again. He didn't say a word.
That's the power and I learned really young that, that if we can be compassionate, does it always work? No. But does it work? A lot of times, if somebody doesn't feel that they're like onstage or trying to save face, or, you know, that kind of thing, if we can just have that moment of connection, it makes us both human. It lets that person know that we see them.
