    Effect on Emotions
Mindfulness and mindful art, just because I combined them so commonly, have been hugely supportive for me through my own emotional journey. When I was a teenager, I started actually doing oil painting with Bob Ross at home. I think he's a master, mindful art teacher, one of the first that I remember when I would paint these happy trees and play with my own creative world on the painting and noticing things, that I would feel so much calmer, and relaxed, and was able to work through a lot of anxiety that I had at the time.
In my late 20s, I had a cancer diagnosis. And I went through surgery and radiation. And at that time, I really discovered a practice of combining mindfulness with collage and writing and a lot of self-reflection. And that was so huge for me to be able to sit with the emotions and the grief that I had at the time around all of that and to be able to offer such care and compassion to myself.
I think mindfulness, through the collage practice that I was using, was just so so huge and such a gift that I could give myself. So there are so many examples, which is why I love this work. But absolutely, it's helped me emotionally tune in and notice what's happening with my emotions and not have as much judgment, and have more compassion. Because of that, then I'm able to feel more relaxed and less anxious or stressed.
    Thoughts on Breathing
I think the breath is an interesting thing to track and notice how it shifts and changes all the time, and can be amazing feedback for us.

    Bullying Story
I was bullied when I was much younger, I had extra weight on me as a kiddo. When I was in elementary school, I would get teased and bullied a lot for my extra weight. For those that were bullying me, I can definitely see that having mindfulness introduced for adults or children when there is bullying could offer a place of awareness of just noticing for them what is happening and awareness of these narratives and tapes that we have, and that there are all these different narratives, and to not have as much judgment around that.
I think probably the biggest part that comes to mind for me is this resiliency with our nervous system, by having mindfulness and by having that nonjudgment, that perhaps even as a child, I could notice sensations and where I'm feeling anxiety in my body or noticing that I'm holding my breath and have ways that I can take care of myself at that moment and also connect with those who would be supportive for me.

    Effect on Emotions
Mindfulness, that ability to be present and to observe me, makes it a lot easier to not react and for most of us, when we meditate, it's gonna be boring. Once in a while, we have a great moment of no mind or bliss or belonging. But the benefit of doing that practice, even when it's just boring, counting our breath or repeating a mantra, whatever it is, that's the practice. So
That's sort of learning how to dribble so we can play at the basketball finals or learning the piano chords so that we can do a concert delivery because it's that ability.
But the mantra it's that boring practice that comes in helpful when we get triggered. And all we need is that moment, that moment of presence, that moment of mindfulness. Oh, whoa, that one hurt. Ooh, that triggered me. And then that brings choice back into the equation. Like then how do I want to respond to this, rather than just that old boring, react, and then regret? Power Matters
    Thoughts on Breathing
It's all about the breath. The breath is at the core of every meditation practice and most spiritual traditions. Let's just think about this example. We're in a conversation that's starting to escalate and kind of about to go south into an argument. That's the moment to use the breath. That's the moment for their Swamis in India that have that much control over their bodies that they can tell their hearts to slow down and they will. So
Most of us are never going to get there. But every one of us can slow down our breathing. So when we slow down the breath, the heart has no choice but to relax. It has to. And when the heart begins to relax, then the body begins to quiet down. And then the nervous system begins to quiet down as well. Power So Matters
And then we can make a choice again about how we show up because we're talking about empowerment. So we're not talking about suppressing our emotions, we're not talking about becoming a doormat, we're talking about bringing choice. And using our being able to communicate our emotions responsibly. So
The emotions aren't good, they're not bad, they're neutral. They're energy. What used to be spiritual teaching, is that everything is energy. Now we know, from quantum physics, it's all energy, including the body, and the emotions. And the problem that we have with suppressing emotions is that they don't go away.  So

    Bullying Story
I talked about the US as an example that after 911 we had the goodwill of the entire world on our side. Because this was such a shocking, unimaginable affront. And so we had a choice point, like how do we express power? And what do we do? We abused it, we bullied, and nobody likes a bully. And we went and invaded a country that we had no business invading, and we're still paying the price for doing that. So
20 years later, or 30 years later, however long it's been, I guess 20-something years later. From a personal perspective, I share a story about when I was in 10th grade

For me, it is about really being aware of emotions. And then going that extra step. What did I just do to make that emotion happen? Because thought influences emotion.
    Thoughts on Breathing
So important. Because whenever we get stressed, we all go shallow breathing and I sometimes recommend that people just stick a few post-it notes around their house or their apartment. And whenever you see one of those, breathe those notes. Take a deep breath. A New Context To Grief

As a child, I got bullied a lot because you wouldn't know it today. Today, I'm very tall but I was always the smallest and the skinniest kid in the class. There was a classic bully and I got bullied a lot by her as all children probably did. I thought if I only found a way to please her so that then she'd approve of me, then the bullying would stop.
If I had been able to just mindfully zoom out of that situation and imagine all of those different situations being played out on a movie screen, for example, I would have probably come to the realization that no matter what little me did, I wasn't ever going to get her approval. A New Context To Grief
If I had just had that mindfulness approach and just gone – hang on a minute, just take many, many steps back, just see the big picture here. And oh, come back to you. That has made a huge difference. A New Context To Grief

    Effect on Emotions
As someone who battles depression, it is an ongoing struggle. I have so much empathy for people that also battle it and don't have the tools that I have. Even today, I'm going through some conflicts at home and some relationship issues. I am trying to make space for the feelings I'm having. Those feelings are not me; they are thoughts I'm having about myself and my role in my family and my work life.
I can't listen to the stories that I'm telling myself right now because they're toxic and terrible. They're going to perpetuate more stagnation, so I'm trying hard today to create that space and allow for a separation between who I am and what I'm experiencing because they are very different, no matter how much the story I'm telling myself is that they are one and the same.
    Thoughts on Breathing
I actually breathe in a very specific pattern before and after meetings. If I just have an anxious moment, I do something called Box Breathing. You inhale to a count of five, four, or five; you hold it at the top for four or five; you exhale for four or five; hold it at the bottom for four or five and repeat that.
All it takes is maybe even just a minute and a half of doing that. But ideally, you want to do it for about five minutes. That actually activates your vagus nerve and starts to reduce or start to activate your calming across your entire body. It's one of the most amazing things that I've ever discovered. And it's free, and it's built-in already.

In seventh grade, one of my friends, Eric went around pantsing everybody all the time That was his thing; he would run up and just drop someone's pants to humiliate them. Everyone would laugh. One day, I decided I was gonna get him back for everybody that he had done in the past. The guy was devastated, and he went to the principal to tattle on me, so I got detention. I laughed the whole time because I was like, you get what you get, you know. But in retrospect, that wasn't the right thing to do. You know, I humiliated somebody. No matter how much pain he brought to others, I should have had more compassion. But I was a seventh grader. I was a dope.
I actually had an interesting experience one year where all of my friends turned against me. I'd find random things in my locker that should not have been there. It was very weird, but it all disappeared the next year.
Looking back, I guess I was bullied for the year. And then I went and worked with my dad, who was a house painter. And if anyone has ever painted a room, you know, there's nothing more monotonous than painting a room. You need to be present, and you need to know where the brush is going. He was an old-school house painter. And I don't think I realized then that I spent the whole summer being mindful.
When school started again, I just didn't care. I walked in and was like; I'm okay; life is life. And everyone saw that what they were doing to me wasn't bothering me anymore. And then everything just kind of turned around.

Being able to shift into that observer and understand; that has been huge for me. I can actually remember when it happened. Dan Millman's book, The Way Of The Peaceful Warrior; I woke up spiritually when I was reading that book. I read that book about a year before I learned about my spiritual gifts.
It was in the fall of 2006, and I'd read Buddhist philosophies for years and not understood it. Why are we contemplating death; what is this whole thing? I thought of it as a scene where he could see his body decomposing in a field and it just snapped. There it is.
That was the first conscious awareness that I had of this dynamic that I had been trying to work with for a long time.  So
    Thoughts on Breathing
Breathing is the opening. It's the constant companion. If somebody comes to me and says, ‘I feel wrapped up in this noise, what's the first thing I could do?' I want to talk about soul embodiment which is one of the things that I think just naturally happens, the divine through me.
And if they say, ‘what do I do there?', I say, ‘let's just do some breathing to start'.

My family moved from Iowa to Boulder Colorado the summer before my seventh grade. I was profoundly naive when I was going into seventh grade; I was very tall and was kind of a beanpole.
I must have made a very attractive target to one particular person who threw me into lockers in the locker room and some of his friends held me down in shop class and he hit me on the head with the handle end of a screwdriver. I don't remember it affecting my internal narrative.
Mindfulness would have supported me in being able to be more fully present in the experience for sure at that place in my life. I can see it so essentially today for adolescents because there seems to be this huge focus on the external as the source of meaning, and so bullying just amplifies that dynamic. And what more powerful resource is there than mindfulness in counteracting that dynamic?

    Effect on Emotions
I deal with my emotions and writing in this little tiny book helps me. When I have a bad day, one of those days where I feel like nothing's going right. Rather than turn to a book, I sit down, and I write. And I'll just fill these pages. I can write really big, I can write angry; that's better than typing. because I can do what I want to. When I'm upset I can really get my emotions out. So
I get it all out, and it gets it out of my system. It's a purging. Then I tear the pages out and burn them because it's not for anybody else. It's me getting rid of it. So
    Thoughts on Breathing
I don't really do so many breathing techniques, but I will tell you something I do to relax. I lay back, because sometimes as a creative, just thinking, just sitting down and being alone with your thoughts matters. And what I do is I'll lay back and I'll take a towel and put it over my eyes like a blindfold. I shut out all the light so I can just be alone in my thoughts, or I'll use music to go along with that. So I can just sort of ease myself in so I think more than I concentrate on what's going on up here. Not so much of the breathing, but just on getting calm and focused. So

One of the stories that I tell people was, I had this kid who was a few years ahead of me, a big guy, pick me up and hang me on the wall on the coat hangers by my belt loops in the hallway, and I couldn't get out, I'm stuck. So to this day, I can hear the laughter of the kids. And it's very, very painful. In that situation, there's not much you can do, but then you flash forward. So
The first boss I had in television news; he was just not a nice guy. The kind who would sit you down and stand over the desk and lean over you and talk down to you and be really stern, and at the time, I didn't know what to do with that. But with the mindfulness that I now that I have, I would do one of two things.
I would either stand up and say, when you sit, I'll sit. Or I'd leave. When you decide to calm down, I'll come talk to you. Because that's just something I can't abide by anymore. And I think if I'd had more awareness about me; if I had had a little more confidence about myself because it's funny that stuff sticks, you know, people don't think it does. When you meet a bully even as an adult, you still kind of cower back. So

  • Squash Anxiety
Anxiety is my topic today and I have entitled the episode, Squash Anxiety. Anxiety is a huge topic; it's even more of an issue than it used to be. I think with COVID, the world situation, and all the challenges we've been dealing with for the last few months, anxiety is on the rise. When it comes to anxiety, it's important to monitor ourselves and notice whether or not we're feeling more anxiety. If so, what can we do about it?

    Anxiety Defined
Anxiety is our body's normal reaction to stress. When we're presented with danger or potential danger, our bodies respond to that stress. That is similar to how our body responds to fear. Fear is the body's response to a real or perceived imminent threat and anxiety is our body and our mind anticipating that future threat. So in knowing that, you need to think about whether this is an actual threat or simply a perceived threat? There is a big difference. So, the first thing to ask yourself is this;  am I safe in this particular moment in time? In this particular instant, am I okay? If you can answer yes to that. Then hopefully you will feel a certain amount of relief right then and there.
You may be able to identify what the perceived imminent threat is that you're experiencing. If so, you can go about, in a very rational way, assessing that situation. What are my possible choices? What can I do and how many of the thoughts that I'm thinking are actually irrational?
Your mind will assume that many of these perceived threats are actually more serious than they truly are. And that in itself can lead us to be more anxious than we really need to be. The truth is, we all experience anxiety. Knowing that we can think of practical ways to deal with that anxiety. Just the fact that you're listening to this podcast on the topic of mindfulness tells me that you suspect or maybe you know that mindfulness is a way that you can deal with this issue.
    How Can We Squash Anxiety?
Research shows that approximately 19% of adults in the United States struggle with anxiety every second single day. However, the research is not telling us how many people have dealt with anxiety by using meditation or mindfulness. By using mindfulness strategies, you can actually become stronger and more capable of leading a happy, successful life that does not include overwhelming anxiety. Certain situations in life are probably going to cause you to feel anxiety no matter what you do. If you're waiting for results from a doctor, driving in terrible weather, or starting a new job, any of these kinds of situations will certainly cause most of us to feel anxiety. That is a completely normal reaction to those types of events, and your emotions are working the way they are intended to operate. Meditation, exercise, hobbies, changing life circumstances, and spending more time in nature can help lessen anxiety.

    Effect on Emotions
I have learned that emotions are very different than feelings. So emotions are how I am actually thinking about feelings. So how I'm dealing with life is actually by looking at my feelings, the sensations in the body, and processing that instead of the story that I tell myself about what that feeling means. And that's how I'm able to actually be with the experience.
    Thoughts on Breathing
Breathing is super important; when we stopped breathing we die. So it's kind of a big deal. I have learned so many different techniques for breathing. And I know that nowadays, I see much more of the Holotropic, faster briefing that is really popular, I am much more inclined in my own practice, to the slowing down of the breath.
One of the main practices for me has been to change the way that I'm breathing by allowing breathing through nose and mouth at the same time in and out, and to be able to slow it down so that it goes to a place that is settled.
So, for example, like, as a practice, it was breathing in, in and out for at least 20 seconds each of them. So breathing in for 10 seconds, breathing out for 20 seconds. And then sometimes, the box breathing, which is the same length for the inhaling, holding, exhaling, and call them. I think that the most important thing about breathing for me is to actually implement it, and try it out.
If you're listening to this, you can implement it. You can do that whilst you're listening, which is the key to the practice of working with the breath. We can use it as long as we are doing anything else. Living Consciously
    Thoughts on Meditation
Meditation is about the state of being. I understood at one point in my practice when I was sitting for many, many hours, that I wasn't getting into this place where my experience shifted. And when it shifted to that place, I felt peace and stillness, and an openness of awareness. And due to the nature of the practices that I was doing in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, a lot of it is about bringing the teachings alive. I was studying to play an experiment, how can I bring that experience to that state of being throughout the day? Living Consciously
Regardless if I am sitting or not, regardless if I have my eyes closed or not. Nowadays, it's about keeping that state of being with everything that I'm doing, I'm talking to you now, and keeping that awareness, I am then going to see a client, I'm giving that away, and I'm going to go to university, then I'm going to give that awareness. Everything that I'm doing is just about that. And of course, I lose that, at different moments, I am not enlightened.
So I'm going to catch myself and come back to it. And yes, sometimes that means centering back by sitting down just as taking a moment. Yet, because of the fact that I have purposely chosen to live my life a little bit slower, I don't lose that as much as I used to. Because I am not going so fast that perhaps I do lose sight of it so I can stay in that state. And yes, every single day, I still do my sitting medita

    Effect on Emotions
Mindfulness has affected me by allowing me to acknowledge how I'm feeling. What do I get to do about it so that I'm not sitting, soaking in the pain or the hurt or the dysfunction? Mindfulness says, okay, yes, this has happened; acknowledge it and feel it. Now, how do you want to safely move through it?
    Thoughts on Breathing
There are three main breaths that I do consistently.
So one is the one breath, just taking that really deep breath and saying it all out. I do that a lot in traffic, I live in Southern California. The Answers Are Always In You
The second one is just kind of slow deep breathing, holding it at the top of four seconds, and then slowly exhaling for four. So I usually do that one before and after my meditations, just to kind of bring me into the meditative state, and then to take me out of the meditative state.
And then my favorite breathing technique is the alternate nostril breathing, just alternating the nostrils like that one, really, really allows me to connect, and just feel and just be that's my absolute favorite breathing technique. The Answers Are Always In You

    Bullying Story
When I came out of the divorce, I jumped right into another relationship. My children, of course, were a package deal. And that situation turned out to be very unhealthy for us. We were verbally bullied. Everything was about what this person had and what we were using, and we were in their house and their car.
We were locked out this one day and made to sit on the porch for hours. And it was weakening for me because I'm allowing my children to go through this because I'm not strong enough to walk away. And had I known then about mindfulness, I could have really gone inside and trusted my spirit. I could have trusted what God was guiding me to do. The Answers Are Always In You
I didn't do that until I learned what mindfulness was. And as soon as we came out of that situation, me and my children spent time together because we needed that healing. And I truly believe that when people learn mindfulness early on, it allows them to know that the pain doesn't deepen as much because you're learning how to work through it. You're learning how to breathe through it, and you're learning how even in this chaos, I can still find a little bit of joy.
So that's what mindfulness means when you are being bullied. And mindfulness can give you the confidence to tell someone how you're feeling and what you are experiencing so that you can feel safe. The Answers Are Always In You

    Effect on Emotions
I don't wear my emotions out front very often. But you get me talking, especially on stage about my wife, about some moments in life and I'll start getting teary-eyed up there. And it's not that I mind showing that emotion at all. But I want to keep my stuff together. So it's bringing me back to a moment and going okay, you're here. It's cool to show the emotional side because it shows you as a human. Now, let's keep your stuff together and it's not coming from a negative place. Build to Business Freedom
    Thoughts on Breathing
I've tried a lot of breathing techniques and I haven't really put the time and effort and energy into learning different breathing techniques. I am a little fascinated by them and I do explore them every once in a while. But I can tell you, for me, the focus is better at this point in time and breathing because I want my farm in the dark and listening to podcasts while I'm doing it. And doing that allows me to get laser-focused on the companies and business and that's been tremendous for me. Build to Business Freedom

    Bullying Story
Growing up as a kid, I was the youngest of three boys and I was a runt and tiny, tiny dude and getting picked on more by my brothers. Being put in sleeping bags and rolled downstairs. I got locked in a gas dryer once upon a time.
My brothers were bigger, tough dudes and now the tables have turned later in life. They're not as tough as they thought they were, but four years in the Marine Corps and 20 years of living, you know, you grow up and you learn a few things. And I don't know for sure if mindfulness would have helped me back then, because I was dealing with more on the physical side of things. But I wonder if I would have stood up for myself a little bit more.
As a little kid, the answer was to run to mom, run to dad, and they would play defender. I wonder if I would have, at that point, been aware enough to stand on my feet.  Yeah. It was really, really cool to watch. Build to Business Freedom
