“Sarah’s Death & Burial”
Pastor Hiroyuki Anjiki
1. Abraham grieving over Sarah’s death
* Genesis 23:2 “He went to the place where she lay dead, sighed and wailed, and was saddened by Sarah’s death.” (Franciscan translation)
Genesis 23:2 “He beat his chest and broke down in tears.” (Nakazawa translation)
Genesis 23:2 “Then he came. Abraham, for the purpose of grieving, for Sarah, and for crying for her.”
(Hebrew direct translation)
Genesis 23:2 “He beat his chest and grieved.” (The New Interconfessional translation)
2. Abraham purchasing a burial plot for Sarah
3. Abraham firmly believing God’s promise
* Genesis 15:13-16 “Then the Lord said to him, “Know for certain that for four hundred years your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own and that they will be enslaved and mistreated there. But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves, and afterward they will come out with great possessions. You, however, will go to your ancestors in peace and be buried at a good old age. In the fourth generation your descendants will come back here, for the sin of the Amorites has not yet reached its full measure.” (NIV)
* Hebrews 11:8-10 “By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going. By faith he made his home in the promised land like a stranger in a foreign country; he lived in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise. For he was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God.” (NIV)
Thoughts to share at mini church:
1. When you think about your own death, how does that make you feel?
2. What kind of impact do you think there is on the lives of people who have hope after death and those who don’t?
