“The Father’s Tears”
Pastor Kenichi Osumi
1. The purpose of the parable
* Luke 15:3 “Then Jesus told them this parable.” (NIV)
* Luke 15:17 “…he came to his senses…” = To realize that you are no longer able to do something and that you are facing a different direction, and decide to return
2. The father’s tears: Tears of joy
* Luke 15:20 “…kissed him.” = Kataphleo = kissed many times (footnote)
“He kissed passionately” (Detailed translation of the Bible)
3. The father’s tears: Tears of sadness
* 2 Corinthians 6:2 “For he says, ‘In the time of my favor I heard you, and in the day of salvation I helped you.’ I tell you, now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation.” (NIV)
* 1 Peter 2:23 “ When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly.” (NIV)
* Luke 19:41 “As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it.” (NIV)
Thoughts to share at mini church:
1. What thoughts did Jesus have about the teachers of the law and the Pharisees?
2. How should we respond to the father’s tears?
