Do you know the expression "To go down the drain"? Literally it's what happens when you go to the sink and pour something down the drain. The hole at the bottom of the sink is the drain. Or you wash some dishes and then you pull the plug and the water goes down the drain. It disappears. It vanishes.
The quality of something can go down the drain.
"The food at that restaurant used to be great but now it's terrible. It really went down the drain."
If a store has a bad manager, the store can go down the drain. The sales get worse and worse and eventually they close their doors and go out of business. "My uncle's shoe store went down the drain during the pandemic."
So now that you have the idea, here are some sentences to practice with.
Example 1: Hey, don't pour that wine down the drain. I'll finish it.
Example 2: The quality of his work has really gone down the drain.
Example 3: Her business went down the drain after all the employees quit.
Example 4: When the stock market crashed in 1929, my grandfather's life savings went down the drain.
Bonus expression: To pull the plug. This means to cancel or stop something. For example: After six weeks, my boss pulled the plug on the project.
Extra bonus: After four years of chaos and lies, the American voters pulled the plug on President Trump.
