I made a mistake in this video. Near the end, at about 12:30, I say I am quoting a verse in the Torah, but in fact I am quoting the line in the Mishnah. I apologize, and I will try to be more careful in the future.
This morning we discuss the fascinating subject of military exemptions in this week's Torah portion, Shoftim (which DO NOT apply to the IDF today - religious military exemptions have no place in Judaism, but that's another topic). We explore the Kotzker Rebbe's understanding of who was exempted, and why, which dramatically applies to every one of us as we approach the upcoming Days of Awe. This is based on a magnificent essay by Bailey Newman.
