As of my last update in September 2021, in Minnesota, certain commercial motor vehicles (CMV) are required to have a Minnesota DOT (Department of Transportation) number. This number helps the state monitor commercial vehicle operations and enforce transportation safety regulations.

Generally, you might need a Minnesota DOT number if your CMV:

1. Has a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) or gross combination weight rating (GCWR) of over 10,000 pounds.
2. Transports hazardous materials in a quantity requiring placarding.
3. Is designed or used to transport more than 8 passengers (including the driver) for compensation.
4. Is designed or used to transport more than 15 passengers, including the driver, and is not used to transport passengers for compensation.

There are other regulations and specifics related to interstate versus intrastate travel. If you are operating a commercial vehicle in multiple states, you may also be subject to Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations and need a USDOT number.

However, transportation regulations can change. It's crucial to consult with the Minnesota Department of Transportation or another relevant agency to get the most current information and requirements related to DOT numbers.
