In this episode of Miss Mona's Advice, I share stories of how kids will push boundaries, how parents may not be enforcing rules, and ways to help their kids learn to make the right decisions.

Did you know that you might inadvertently teach your children how to get away with things by not enforcing consequences for unwanted behavior?

Without consequences for inappropriate actions, children tend to repeat the same behaviors.

Enforcing a consequence the first time a child does something wrong can be difficult, but it's essential so they know that their actions have consequences.  While they are little, a warning system is the best approach to prevent kids from misbehaving. It's the enforcement of the consequence that many parents struggle with.

Children have a natural tendency to test their parents periodically to see if they will follow through with threats. When Mom and Dad fail to do so, the child inadvertently learns that there's no resulting action to the behavior no matter what their parents say.

It's best if teachers and caregivers share information with parents (and each other) on the negative behaviors expressed in the classroom, if they don't already.

I advise parents to stick to their guns if they choose to implement a drastic consequence, such as throwing away toys.

This episode of Miss Mona's Advice talks about how children learn at different points in their lives, and not to worry because there are always differences between kids. Different learning styles, birth order, gender, and so many things affect how children learn. These are just a few examples of development that all children experience.

I share stories from the homeschooling days with my kids, as well  as a preschool teacher, and how I managed to design a study plan that encouraged them in areas where they struggled.

Parents often compare their children without realizing it. It is important to know if your kids need support in a specific area. But, but try not worry too much about differences in siblings.

For example, comparing a younger child to their older sibling when they were that age. There are always differences.

"Number one, don't compare children, they learn differently and at different paces. One may be more athletic than the other, or more creative. Everyone is different, they'll get there, just at their own pace. Sometimes they may need to take a different path, we may need to help them find that path.

I suggest creating engaging, daily habits such as reading street signs and pointing out letters on billboards. These little things can help children learn at their own pace. If you make a game of it they don’t even realize they're learning.
