Author bios:
Charlie Ryan and Pamela Martin Ovens previously collaborated on The Pullman Hilton, A Christmas Mystery and My Life with Charles Fraser, chronicling the recollections of the men and women who worked for and knew Fraser, the iconic founder of Sea Pines Plantation.
Charlie Ryan was, over a span of eighteen years, a radio and television news director and anchor, Associated Press state broadcast editor and newspaper columnist. He reportorial years were spent in West Virginia and St. Louis. In his journalism career he focused on politics and interviewed notables including Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon, Eleanor Roosevelt and Robert Kennedy. He is a recipient of numerous honors and a member of the West Virginia Broadcasting Hall of Fame.
Following his broadcast career, Charlie founded and grew four media firms in West Virginia, Virginia and Washington, DC. After 35 years he sold the firms and became the founding dean of the Graduate School of Business at the University of Charleston in Charleston, WV.
Charlie and his wife Becky moved to Hilton Head where he served three years on the board of directors of the Sea Pines Plantation Community Services Association as chairman and the Association of Property Owners. They now reside in Charlotte, NC.
Charlie has also written Dead Men’s Clubs and Alacrity, his memoir.
Pamela Martin Ovens has lived on Hilton Head Island for almost 40 years. She and her husband, legendary boat captain Peter Ovens, are widely known for their charter sailboat business of 16 years, hosting hundreds of tourists on the 62-foot yacht Schooner Welcome. Pamela is the chief executive and owner of Single Star Publishers. She was a radio and television professional in Cincinnati prior to her move to Hilton Head Island and hosted an island radio show on WHHR. Today she is an accomplished “voice over artist” for radio and television commercials.
