Austin Hatch's story is one of tragedy, incomprehensible loss, and triumph. On Labor Day of 2003, Austin and his family were flying from Northern Michigan to Fort Wayne, IN. As they were preparing to land, the aircraft crashed and burst into flames.
Austin's dad threw him out of the plane to save his life and ran back into the plane to get his mom and siblings. Tragically, Austin and his dad were the only survivors. They grieved the loss of their family and pushed on, which is what they would've wanted. Eventually, his dad remarried a woman with three children and they formed a wonderful blended family.
Austin saw success as a basketball player and got a full scholarship to the University of Michigan. Just nine days later, tragedy struck again. Austin was flying with his dad to Northern Michigan when they experienced another tragic plane crash. This time Austin was the only survivor.
Austin suffered severe injuries and was in a coma for two months. He had to relearn how to walk, talk, and live. But with the help of many incredible doctors, therapists, family, and friends, he made it to Michigan.
Now, Austin is a full-time motivational speaker who shares a message about grit and thriving in the midst of adversity. Listen to this episode to hear how Austin has taken incredible tragedy and loss and used it to help others overcome challenges using G.R.I.T.

Perry Williams is a retired NFL Player and two-time Super Bowl Champion. He's also a keynote speaker and the Director of Sports Management at Long Island University (LIU).
On a team of stars, Perry Williams was an unsung hero and silent leader of the New York Giants Football team for 11 seasons (1983-1994). He was the starting right cornerback for one of the most storied and dynamic defenses in NFL history, culminating with two NFL Super Bowl Championships (1986-1987) and (1990-1991). Impressively, Perry holds the record for the most games played as a defensive back (corner) in the history of the Giants—a testament to his dedication and consistency.
Perry's greatest accomplishment as a New York Giant was not his all-pro honors or Super Bowl championships, but rather, that he was a benefactor and now a director of outreach programs for the New York Giants Degree Completion Program at Fairleigh Dickinson University, which has since become the model adopted by the NFL and its member teams for the benefit of its players.
During his professional football career off-season, Perry earned a Criminal Justice/Sociology Bachelor of Arts degree from North Carolina State University and a Master of Public Administration degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University. This is a feat that is virtually unheard of in the lucrative world of professional sports.
Perry is a highly sought-after motivational speaker that has been invited to work with companies like Exxon/Mobil, Starbucks, IBM, UPS, and Verizon Wireless. He has lectured at hundreds of Schools, Colleges, and Universities as well as other respected organizations such as the United Way Foundation.
Listen in for some great takeaways about Perry's journey as a two-time Super Bowl Champion and how preparing for life after football has allowed him to be a champion both on and off the field.

Today's show is a special one as my better half, Denise Sprung, is my guest. Denise is the Chair of the Keith Milano Memorial Fund at the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP). Keith died by suicide at just 27. Today would've been his 46th Birthday.
We decided that there's no better way to wrap up Mental Health Awareness Month than to honor Keith's memory, share his story, and share the tremendous amount of positivity that has taken place since he's been gone.
Keith was a son, brother, and took great joy in being an uncle. He was fun-loving and always the life of the party. For those listening who knew Keith, take some time to remember your Keith stories. Share how he made you smile, how generous he was, and talk about his laugh.
For those that didn't have the pleasure of knowing Keith, hopefully today's show will shed light on who he was and the incredible impact he has had on others in this conversation about mental health.
Listen in for some great takeaways about Keith's journey, and the impact he had on his sister, his family, and the entire world.

Living Undeterred with Jeffrey Johnston, Episode #132
On October 4, 2016, the trajectory of Jeffrey Johnston's life changed with one phone call. Before that day, Jeff was living the American Dream. He had a great family, was a successful entrepreneur running a financial services firm in Iowa, and was seemingly coasting through life.
But that morning Jeff received the phone call that is every parent's worst nightmare. His oldest son, Seth, had died from fentanyl poisoning. He was only 23 years old.
Jeff soon realized that he had two options. He could go down a road of anger and despair and become bitter, or he could use his situation as motivation to become better. He chose the latter.
Jeff took a step back from his career as a financial advisor and focused his attention toward making a difference. In 2020, Jeff founded Choices Network, Ltd. a non-profit dedicated to educating kids, parents, teachers, and coaches on the importance of making positive choices. That same year, he wrote his first book, "This One's For You: An Inspirational Journey Through Addiction, Death and Meaning" and started the Living Undeterred Project.
In 2021 the project got even more personal for Jeff when he lost his wife, Prudence, to alcoholism. Jeff just completed a 95-day trip across the United States to talk to people about mental health and substance use disorders. Listen in for some takeaways about Jeff's turning tragedy into a mission to better himself and help other families avoid what he's experienced.

Today's guest is Command Sergeant Major (CSM) Gretchen Evans, a retired army veteran, author, athlete, speaker, and mentor. CSM Evans is a highly decorated female veteran who began her journey when she entered the United States Army at just 19 years old.
She worked her way up to CSM, the highest rank an enlisted soldier can achieve. In 2006, CSM Evans' world changed when she was severely wounded by incoming fire while serving in Afghanistan. The rocket blast caused a traumatic brain injury, internal injuries, and complete hearing loss.
After retiring from service, her transition into civilian life was difficult. But with grit, gumption, resilience, and determination, CSM Evans navigated her changed life and found a new passion and purpose advocating for veterans of all services.
Today, she pays it forward by improving the lives of her fellow veterans by actively serving as a mentor, coach, and community activist. In 2019, CSM Evans assembled a mixed-ability team of disabled combat veterans and civilians to compete in the World's Toughest Race: Eco-Challenge Fiji. Her team was the first totally disabled team to ever compete.
Team Unbroken inspired millions with their resolve to not let their injuries define who or what they could achieve in life. Listen in for some great takeaways about Gretchen's journey through the ranks of the United States Military to advocating for veterans and those faced with disabilities.
