Protestants, Progressives, and women all spearheaded the drive to institute Prohibition. This led directly to the rise of organized crime. Each of the two men attempting to outdo the other in the field, resorting to bribery, theft, and often, destruction of the bones they were trying to collect. Each scientist also sought to ruin his rival's reputation with personal attacks in publications.
