Harry Smith's Anthology of American Folk Music was the acoustic bible of the 1960s folk revival. This vinyl whiz-bang offered a musical tour of the South, all except for one track. Britt Aamodt traces its origins to a small café bar on St. Paul's University Avenue in the 1920s.

In 1900, Josephine Tilden, a 31-year-old botany professor from the University of Minnesota, purchased three acres of remote Vancouver coastline. For a brief time, the Minnesota Seaside Station became an outdoor classroom for Midwest college students to study the varied and bizarre flora and fauna living in the windswept tidepools.

R.D. Zimmerman’s fascination with Russia took root with an introductory Russian language class at Macalester College in St. Paul. Britt Aamodt examines the transformation of Zimmerman into an author, under the pen name Robert Alexander, and his Russian trilogy, beginning with the 2003 novel The Kitchen Boy.

Less than a month before, in May 1964, the Rolling Stones’ first LP hit American record stores. So when they rolled into Excelsior, Minnesota, there weren’t any paparazzi or screaming girls. Not much fuss at all. Britt Aamodt looks at the June night when the Stones played Danceland.

In the early morning hours of June 7, 1928, Captain Edward E. Smith left the steamer USS America in the hands of the first mate. But his hopes for a few hours’ sleep were dashed when the mate ran the America into a hidden reef, tearing a hole in its steel hull.

It had never been seen before, a fully-enclosed shopping mall that sprawled over 500 acres in the Minneapolis suburb of Edina. Britt Aamodt tells the story of Southdale, the mall that when it opened in 1956 became the model for a thousand imitators but left famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright feeling, "blah."
