Social media continues to transform how individuals and communities all over the world engage with each other. Twitter (aka X), Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube are just a few popular platforms that provide content creators a space to bring new trends, discuss global topics, and a way for activists to share photos of resistance. Social media has proven to be a powerful tool for education, bringing truth in a false news world, and a place that can be scrolled through for hours.

This episode brings social media users and content creators to a discussion on how education about Hawai'i is translated between those on island and those in the diaspora. We take a look at popular trends such as #KānakaTwitter to discuss how Kānaka are communicating with each other in hopes of exemplifying individual and collective kuleana.

Lā Kū‘oko‘a (Hawaiian Independence Day) overview of the importance and recognition in which Hawai'i was acknowledged as a Sovereign Nation by the British and France in 1843. "Paradise" is often imagined through ideologies that can be noted as "other-wordly" in a religious sense to a place that is filled with "magical" innuendos. Often malihini and visitors from across the world use such terms as "paradise" to describe Hawai'i as a place of wonder that is inviting and is not filled with capitalistic endeavors from outside developers. While Kānaka Maoli on and off island may have a different perception about paradise, we unpack these ideologies from different perspectives of Kānaka and generational locals who understand Hawai'i as home (and maybe paradise).

Our panelists:

• Michelle Kamigaki-Baron – Oʻahu to British Columbia

• Matt Camara – O'ahu to Minneapolis

• Olivia Edison – Maui to Louisville
