    Firearm Basics with John McAdams

On this week’s episode of the Modern Carnivore Podcast, Mark talks with John McAdams about firearm basics.  John McAdams is the founder of the Big Game Hunting Blog.  He created this blog as a source of information for the average hunter and to help prepare hunters for their big game hunting adventures.  He is a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point and an Army Veteran of 10 years.  Through his experiences in the military and growing up as a hunter, he has gained an extensive knowledge of firearms.  In this episode, he shares this knowledge with Mark and the listeners of the Modern Carnivore Podcast.

New Hunter Stories – Ronnell Lynn

On this week’s episode of the Modern Carnivore Podcast Mark has a conversation with first-time hunter Ronnell Lynn and his mentor Erik Jensen.  Ronnell is a butcher at the Seward Co-Op in Minneapolis and has plenty experience with meat.  Erik helped to build and served as a board member for the Minnesota chapter of Backcountry Hunters and Anglers. He is also a passionate hunting mentor with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.  While butchering Ronnell’s first deer, they discuss the hunt and the process/preparations for a backcountry hunting experience.  They share the good and the bad about hunting in the backcountry wilderness of Minnesota.   Listen in for plenty of laughs and a very unique way of asking someone about their interest in hunting.

Hardwater Hunters head to the Superior National Forest

Editor’s Note: This post is part of the Hardwater Hunters series by Modern Carnivore focused on darkhouse spearfishing. Look for other posts in this series by clicking on this link.)

In this episode of the Modern Carnivore Podcast I go darkhouse spearfishing in the Superior National Forest with John Kaczorek, Don Murray and Devin O’brien. This “backcountry” spearfishing adventure is near the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) and we’re after northern pike. If you’re not familiar with darkhouse spearing this is a great introductory discussion on this winter tradition in the northern regions of the country.

Don Murray has years of experience darkhouse spearing.

John Kaczorek has a deep passion for darkhouse spearing, but this is his first trip to this region of Minnesota.

Devin O’brien is an avid hunter and angler, but has never been darkhouse spearfishing.

New Hunters at Grouse Camp 2020 – Part 2

I recently attended Grouse Camp 2020 in Eagle River, Wisconsin and got to talk with several new hunters. This is the second year that the Ruffed Grouse Society has held this event, and even though the heavens opened with a deluge of rain on Saturday evening a wonderful time was had by all. In this second set of conversations I talked with Alex and Delos Kohnhorst who went out hunting with Luke who was their mentor for the day. I also caught up with Mike and Dave Schwabe who are brothers that have hunted together for 30 years and are passionate about mentoring new hunters. And finally I talked with Jake Lindemann who is a new grouse hunter, and the founder of Chief Upland. I think you’ll really enjoy these conversations!

New Hunters at Grouse Camp 2020 – Part 1

I recently attended Grouse Camp 2020 in Eagle River, Wisconsin and got to talk with several new hunters. This is the second year that the Ruffed Grouse Society has held this event, and even though the heavens opened with a deluge of rain on Saturday evening a wonderful time was had by all. In this first set of interviews I talk with Simon Tiedge who is originally from Germany, and started hunting two years ago after moving to Minnesota. I also talked with Gino and Sarah Venditti who met in Pittsburgh and then got married after Gino served Sarah wild elk for the first time. They now live in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and live an active outdoor lifestyle. The last interview is with Britton Seivert and John Wiesinger. John is Britton’s father-in-law and he didn’t start hunting until the age of 50, and Britton is the one who spurred him on to becoming a hunter. John is now an avid hunter, shooter, and soon-to-be owner of a hunting dog. I think you’ll really enjoy these conversations!

Ben Jones – President / CEO of the Ruffed Grouse Society and American Woodcock Society

Just days before the pandemic required our country to close down I was able to sit down with Ben Jones who is the President and CEO of two hunting conservation organizations: The Ruffed Grouse Society and the American Woodcock Society. We were at Pheasant Fest which is the annual meeting of the organization Pheasants Forever, and great conservation partner of both Ben’s organizations and Modern Carnivore.

We talk about forest health and how proper management can help replicate natural disturbances that have been eliminated as the human population continues to expand across our continent.

  • Diversity In Hunting – Modern Carnivore Podcast (EP:014)
    Diversity In Hunting

Diversity in hunting and the inclusion of all people is a serious issue that hasn’t often received enough serious attention. We in the outdoor world who hunt and fish are not immune to this. For too long the community and the industries that feed off it have been too insulated, playing only to those who were traditionally active participants. It’s now time to reach out to the broader world and welcome people into the water and woods to take part in hunting, fishing and foraging.

It’s unfortunate that there are still hurdles to this and that it takes situations like the killing of George Floyd for people to wake up to the challenges that exist for people of color, or any other identifying characteristic that attracts judgement by others. Modern Carnivore has made a commitment to highlight these issues, to talk about them, and to continue to look for ways to eliminate barriers to entry in the outdoors.

In this episode Mark’s guests are Jenny Ly who is the founder of Chasing Food Club and Alex Kim who is the former diversity coordinator for Backcountry Hunters & Anglers. They’re both new hunters and share their thoughts and perspectives on starting to hunt not only as an adult, but as a Vietnamese Canadian and a Korean American.

At Modern Carnivore our mission has been, and always will be:

…To awaken the hunter within. We introduce people to hunting, fishing and foraging through conversations about real food. We respect each person’s background and welcome them into a community that values conservation, access to public lands, fair chase of fish and game and the enjoyment of real wild food.

I hope you find this podcast helpful as we look to have more conversations on the issue of inclusion in the outdoors.
