In this episode I sit down with Larry Madden, the founder of Salt Lake Center for Science Education, former Superintendent of the Salt Lake City School District, long-time legendary educator, and the principal who hired me in my current job. Larry is one of the most grounded and down-to-earth humans I know. He has been trail-blazing in the education world for 27 years and is the epitome of quality leadership. His light-hearted nature, infectiously positive energy, and utopian ideals make him a force to be reckoned with. Although he doesn’t identify as an education reformist, he has been wreaking havoc for nearly three decades now.
In this episode we talk about staying in touch with the inner child, his idealistic leadership style, what it means to be a leader, politics in education, standardized testing, the power of light-heartedness, how urban cruising helps him cope with stress, and what school is for.
You will hear the cicada’s from his back yard whistling in the background, I hope you find them soothing and I hope you enjoy.
